Call for 10-year ANC leadership terms

2012-12-10 07:16

Cape Town - The ANC in the Western Cape will ask that the party's constitution be amended to give its top six officials an unbroken 10-year term, it was reported on Sunday.

Provincial African National Congress chairperson Marius Fransman told the Sunday Times this proposal would stabilise the ANC and would avoid bruising leadership contests every five years.

The proposal will be tabled at the party's 53rd elective conference in Mangaung next week.

Push for stability

"Some of us will be part of a very strong lobby that will push for stability. Part of that stability is that we must manage our elections better within the ANC, and in order to do that we need a 10-year trajectory of leadership," Fransman said.

He said the proposal would avoid the practices of factions purging those who did not agree with their leadership choices or positions ahead of conferences.

According to the report, the proposal would not affect members of the national executive committee, who would still be elected every five years.

The newspaper reported that Fransman's proposal could meet with stiff resistance in Mangaung, as it would affect the upward mobility of ambitious members.

And so the foundations for a Dictatorship begins....

      marilyn.docherty.9 - 2012-12-10 07:45

Enough is enough - We will be going down the same road as Zimbabwe! Zuma will be another Mugabe. I am sick and tired of the ANC trying every which way they can to change the Constitution to serve their evil intentions!!!!!!

      paulvernonza - 2012-12-10 07:54

That would only be a half truth, The real answer is nothing more than self preservation, These morons are only able to seek ways to maintain power , but have not got a clue how to use it for the greater good. Simply do not have intelligence to see what wrong with a 10 years term, unable to be rational and logical hence we have brain farts like this. Seriously with statements like that you are too stupid for a 10 day term. Seriously consider applying this immediately to all corporate positions first and see how illogical the crap spewing out of the ANC really is.

      Rebel - 2012-12-10 08:00

BLUE, you are right. Many a prisoner that got a life sentence get out in 10 years. Imagine what damage a incompetent ANC leader can do in 10 years. Just look at the mess they cause in half that time. The scary part is that a leader just needs to be re-elected once under the new proposed ANC constitution to effectively be a dictator.

      oddearring - 2012-12-10 08:36

      My thought exactly - 2012-12-10 08:52

yip, dictatorship stranglehold on the populace, until the populace vote differently, and even then the clinging to power will not end, messed up politics...

      jason.davidson.144 - 2012-12-10 09:56

I may be wrong, but surely they are entitled to change their constitution if they want to. It is their internal constitution as an organisation and is not the same thing as the constitution of the country.

  • frikdt - 2012-12-10 07:26

Relentlessly moving forward to totalitarianism in their thoughts and actions.

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-12-10 07:31

with a 2/3 majority it was only going to be a matter of time, with the secrecy bill and other constitutional changes , we sliding down a very slippery slope

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-12-10 07:27

Not a very good idea. The longer the term, the more crime can be hidden. It's got nothing to do with stability, but the survival of one self, money and power.

      johann.fouche.50 - 2012-12-10 08:48

It is for stability. Now at least all ANC officials can look forward towards a stable income generated bribery, corruption, stealing from the poor, stealing from legitimate tax payers...

  • sipho.mbambesa - 2012-12-10 07:36

Thank u fransman for understanding that it takes time for leaders to learn so they can become great leaders and we should not blame them in the first 5 years if they steal or brake the law because they are still learning!

      Mark - 2012-12-10 07:58

You my friend are a Dumb A$$

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2012-12-10 08:18

Stealing and braking the law is wrong. That's the kind of things that your mommy and daddy teaches you when you are a toddler. You don't appoint somebody as a state president that doesn't understand those basic things yet. Cummon dude seriously now are you for real?

      frikdt - 2012-12-10 08:19

A great leader being one who, after 5 years, learned to steal and break the law in such a way that he doesn't get caught?

      cathy.vanvollenstee - 2012-12-10 08:27

      Are you really totally clueless?

      rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-12-10 08:44

sipho: Next time you use public transport or have serious surgery do think about your comment. Perhaps the pilot/driver/surgeon needs a second/third/fourth chance because they are still learning. Far better that professionals are professionally competent and that leaders know how to lead before they take control. Excuses, such as yours above, simply highlight the incompetence of the current leaders.

      Mhlonso - 2012-12-10 08:48

Sipho said that with toung in cheek. Get it?

      rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-12-10 08:53

Mhlonso: How can you know where his tongue was. I can read nothing in the posting to suggest that sipho is not 100% serious. To be effectice satire needs to include some point that is completely ridiculous or unbelievable...and it needs to get that accross to a really diverse cultural mix in SA...not easy. sipho; if you were not serious I agree with you!

      nhlakaniphog1 - 2012-12-10 09:24

Nihlulwa iSingisi. White people who don't understand English it pathetic. Re read what Sipho probably a Xhosa is saying before you expose your stupidity here. When we use sarcasm and irony we don't say because it is up to the read to pick it up. Sipho is sarcastic for some reason you failed to pick that up, disappointing.

      ntebu.mthi - 2012-12-10 09:42

And then have two centres of power? Remembering that the constitution of the Republic allows General Elections every 5 years. Or is this someway of forcing the president of ANC to be elected president of the country and therefore have a default 2 terms for a president?

      rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-12-10 09:52

nhlakaniphog 1: Fact, the majority of responses are thumbs down Assumption: There are many English speakers giving thumbs down Conclusion: Most people, including English people did not read the comment as satiricle. Observation: Whilst the writer may have intended the comment to be satirical (how about a note from the writer to clear that up) it has not been taken that way by most people. Postscript: Your insults and bad manners serve only to expose your poor communication skills...try to adopt a more balanced forward looking view that does not alienate those in contact with you.

      charl.malan.12 - 2012-12-10 10:16

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-10 11:32

Sipho.mbambesa. In other words a thief who has't stolen for a period of five years at least, should not be punished because he is still leaning?. No wonder this country is going down the drain.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-10 11:35

Nkhlakaniphog1. White people who do not understand English?. Now you are being funny.

  • Asdiedamwalbars - 2012-12-10 07:39

Disaster for any country..and a highway to Dictatorship..worse than communism. Specially in a country like SA where corruption, money laundering, fraud and theft from and with taXpayers money, and abuse of it, are on the order of the day, from the top to the low positions in the Government and it's constitutions. That is a worse of a proposal you will ever get. made by people who claim to be intelligent, but prove to be idiots for real.

Fransman, you got nothing better to do than think about crap do you, another waisted drain on the economy. Rather think of fixing things now than try give the crooks 10 years in corrupt power, in fact give leaders 1 year, if they dont perform boot them. At least they dont end up with R220 mil bill for a house, R320 000 for clothes, R10 mil for fuel and the list doesnt end...

      arthur.salvado - 2012-12-10 07:51

How does one give them 1 year ? How does one fire them ? The most (possibly) corrupt man in the country is elected our leader. How do you fire him. Nice though though webstorm

  • arthur.salvado - 2012-12-10 07:45

This is simply the continuation of what has happened throughout Africa. On the positive side, there is no stopping the destruction of this country. We are closer than we like to admit. Many years ago, an American (sorry) said that we will know when we've arrived at the point of no return. 1- education failure. (we've arrived) 2- corrupt police . (we've got that already) 3- poor medical services and facilities. ( done deal) To follow the above failures, here comes dictatorship and silencing of the press. Sounds familiar to other countries on our borders or just north of us. It's Monday morning, so I thought I'd just share the positives.

Dear ANC Western Cape - you just don't get this democracy thing, do you? You also don't get that your party is beyond help, do you? Your party is corrupt and incompetent from the very top, all the way through. Do not make any long term plans. You are finnished. Based on your performance, in any other democratic country (barring Zim and a few others for obvious reasons) you would have been removed from power long ago. Well, unfortunately for you the voters are waking up, getting educated, and beginning to think for themselves. You guys are history.

  • mike.clery - 2012-12-10 07:55

Fransman's proposal is dangerous. Where does this end? A lifetime term will give even more "stability". President-for-life next?

  • niki.wessels - 2012-12-10 07:58

Next step is tampering with the constitution to make Zuma president for life and immune to all prosecution... Most of those at the top deserve at least a ten-year term - in jail.

      frikdt - 2012-12-10 08:02

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-10 11:44

Rankees.moka. Fransman just want to make sure he has a job for the next ten years. Disliked by the majority he is looking for attention, especially since his loud mouth support for Zuma is frowned upon in his own party. Politically he is a liability, and exactly where he should be since none of the other parties want him. After all he tried them all and when they wouldn't give him a high position he went looking elsewhere and finally returned to the ANC and that is the end of the line for this joker.

It is not the length of term that bruises leadership but it is the greed for money and power.I would rather it be shortened to two years so they can leave before the seats are too warm for them to vacate.

  • lee.brand.73 - 2012-12-10 08:26

Fransie is not a full box but lets be clear on what he is saying. He is talking about internal ANc leadership. This would work in our favour. The party would implode much quicker if you did this. It would not survive the 10 years. Crack up in 3. There are obviously issues in the ranks?

  • Mbuso Siera - 2012-12-10 08:26

a good push for stability.....nd it will result into great performance....achieving long term goals...

      burningdogz - 2012-12-10 08:35

Is that what Robert Mugabe told the Zimbabweans? Small steps to an overall dictatorship. Working in unity to clearly defined and measurable goals in a transparent and honorable manner will go so much further. Basically they are now removing the only carrot that kept the donkey trodding. Don't worry ladies nd gentleman, you now have ten years to loot and plunder and can sit on your bums more comfortably without the fear of being removed.

  • haroldrvjansen - 2012-12-10 08:28

  • chris.khanye - 2012-12-10 08:28

Whether ANC leaders get 1 day, 5 or 10 years - it won't reverse the demise of the ANC. Putting the ANC on a 10 year life support won't save it from itself. The grave is ready for its final resting place!

one step closer to president for life.

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-12-10 08:34

Democracy will be better served if the term is reduced to 12 months. A long term will lead to a sense of entitlement and ownership rather than engagement with service to the organisation and community. 12 months is long enough manage projects without corrupting them

  • Asdiedamwalbars - 2012-12-10 08:35

Disaster for a party, because with all the fights within for power will it implode early..and disasterous for any country where it will be move towards dictatorship and self enrichment...on the cost of the taxpayer. Only a way to secure the fact to be more untouchable to do what they want..with the opposition out of the way. Like a soccer team who win the trophy for 10 years.. What is there to play for in the next years to come?. Stupid idiotic idea.

  • marc.ross.965 - 2012-12-10 08:36

  • greggail.garnie - 2012-12-10 10:36

This is how it went in Zims. Next the ANC will push to change the constitution on Presidential terms. Democracy is too great a challenge for former liberation movements who feel they are 'owed' leadership at any cost.

  • jomar.delange - 2012-12-10 11:24

Marius Fransman has no where else to go so ten years on the soft cushions of the ANC will suit him just fine. Wasn't he suppose to be out there with the farm labourers? Of course it could also be that he is smelling the end nearing after his loud mouth support for Zuma. What a silly man he is.
