Cape has land to spare for housing - ANC

2012-09-04 10:17

Cape Town - The Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town had more land available for housing than the national government, provincial ANC chair Marius Fransman said on Monday.

Responding to Western Cape Premier Helen Zille's rebuttal of demands by the ANC Youth League, Fransman said Zille was deceiving the poor.

He claimed land worth about R50bn was available, but remained unused.

There was a plan to create 5 000 low-to-middle-income houses on land between Constantia and Tokai, but this was shelved, he said.

Land was sold off under the guise of using it for housing for the poor, only for it to be turned into golf courses and big property developments, Fransman added.

3 000 houses

Former premier, now a member of the provincial legislature, Lynne Brown said the area between Blaauberg and Atlantis could accommodate 3 000 houses.

But the provincial government was not interested in this, and wanted to push people back to the townships, Brown claimed.

The ANC Youth League staged a march last week, demanding that privately-and company-owned land in Constantia and Rondebosch be made available for housing for the poor.

Zille rejected this notion.

"This would require wholesale expropriation of residential property, resulting in the collapse of the economy and the rates base of the City of Cape Town," she said.

"There would be mass job losses and a dramatic reduction in the tax revenue needed to subsidise free services and provide infrastructure in poor communities."

If the province was to comply with this demand, mass impoverishment would result. The poor would become much poorer, Zille said.

Fransman said Zille did not have the authority to deal with poor people's problems.

The ruling party would push for a reduction in the number of provinces at its elective conference in December, he said.

I want to know why the poor deserve houses???? Whats wrong with council flats?? you can fit a lot more people into flats. Just a thought!

      jonathancfarrell - 2012-09-04 11:38

What's wrong with getting off their ass and getting a dam job and pay your way instead of just wanting everything for free??? And my goodness they even fussy, they want land on Constantia, if Constantia was under developed and in the dirt and maybe some veld out in the bush was of comprehensive value they would want that too? I work hard and cannot even afford that! Stupid dumb f*cks!

      nun.chuck.7 - 2012-09-04 13:58

Because the ANC promised them. The ANC promised that every person would have their own house, water and electricity all those years ago. That is why we are in the position we are today, because the ANC made promises that it cannot backup. That is why there are all these protests, because this generation have grown up being told that they will get everything from the government, no hard work required. Go look at any other African country and you'll see people doing things for themsleves, not waiting for handouts.

Mr Fransman, when the cANCer was in power in Western Cape NOTHING happened, except corruption. If you had have done what Zille and company are doing you would still have been in power. Methinks its a case of Sour Grapes. Eish...

Thats why THEY want more houses house more voters

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-04 10:57

Here comes the lying ANC again ... one fib after the next.... when they were in charge they sold off BIG BAY to their cronies, did they build low cost housing....? No they sold it off for huge profits....whatever the ANC touches they stuff it up... they can not say anything about anything because they are liars top to bottom and side ways.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-04 11:46

They also sold off the Waterfront to the Arabs. - 2012-09-06 16:28

The lies start in the first sentence "The Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town had more land available for housing than the national government". Seeing as National Government has admitted on many occasions that they have no idea of how much land they own Fransman has no authority to make this statement.

  • john.loveland.9 - 2012-09-04 10:59

Mr Fransman, talk is cheap. Be more specific and tell us where all this land is... "Fransman said Zille did not have the authority to deal with poor people's problems". If she doesn't have the "authority", then central government, i.e. the ANC, must have the authority, in which case march to their offices not Zilles.

  • piet.boerie - 2012-09-04 11:13

The poor need non corrupt representatives Marius, non corrupt representatives. How about making a noise over the rot that now presides over government or your outrage at the poor miners been shot. You and your governement is the House Slave to the super wealthy.

  • bruce.wilson.313 - 2012-09-04 13:02

no one is commenting on the statement that ANC wants to push for reducing the number of provinces. what better way to get the DA out of power in the western cape, than combine it with a province that has LOTS OF ANC voters.

      hein.huyser - 2012-09-05 08:13

Of coarse that is what they are doing all over SA. They now suddenly all over combine municipalities with those where they have lost all voters with areas where they still have some votes. - 2012-09-06 16:32

Hi Bruce, First to change the provinces the ANC would hav to change the constitution and they don't have the votes. Secondly their plan is to merge the Northern Cape, Western Cape and west side of the Eastern Cape into a province. It is not guarenteed that the ANC would win, and considereing the voting trends it is more likely that the DA would win (probably in coalition). This would mean that half of the country's area would be DA blue. I say bring it on.

  • vivian.harris.73 - 2012-09-04 13:11

Sure Zille would build the houses if the ANC government paid for it from the billions they stealing. Why must we tax payers foot the bill for ANC voters?

  • nun.chuck.7 - 2012-09-04 13:51

What is wrong with these people. You can't simply build 5000 low income houses in an upmarket residential area without considering the knock on effects. These idiots just see an open piece of land and say "I want it!" They have no idea how the property values in the area would be destoyed costing the local goverment tonnes of cash and possibly further impeding their ability to deliver basic services. They just think there is and endless pot of money and they deserve a part of it. Marius Fransman is just taking advantage of the poor, uneducated, and ignorant.

Go and have a look at this clip, Pastor James David Manning tells it like it is !!! He has a PhD and is a black man !!

      Werner Roets - 2013-06-17 20:05

He's also an idiot. If you want to know why Europe originally developed so much faster economically, I recommend you read 'Guns, Germs and Steal'. It explains how 12 of 14 domesticatable animals are native to the middle east and how this allowed these society more time to pursue technology. Racism never helped anybody Paul :(

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-09-04 14:47

Mr Frasman. It was you and your corrupt government that sold that land off when you were in power of the W.C. You sold that land to fill your fat greedy pockets. Now that the DA has the W.C you try to make it as if they did it. Its just your way of saying we the ANC screwed the poor ppl over for your own fat benefit. Why dont you take your FAT LAZY @SS and go sort out your 8 provinces that is run by the ANC. I bet there is land worth R100bn for the poor you can give to but again your selling that land up to fill your pockets more. By the way the land between blouberg and Atlantis is a nature reserve you Twat, google it and see. It just shows you cant think further than your nose. You W.C ANC cant get over the fact that the DA kicked your @sses in the provincal voting and are doing a far better job than what you idiot have done in the past 18yrs.

  • leslie.williams.336 - 2012-09-04 15:25

population density is the lowest in northern cape why not build all the housing there

      Werner Roets - 2013-06-17 20:06

They don't want A house. They want YOUR house.

  • Shaun - 2012-09-04 15:36

Dont any of the ANC`s mismanaged provinces have any land?

  • johandebeer - 2012-09-04 22:41

Why does the ANC now realises this, now that the DA rules the Western Cape? What about all the years before? By the way, this is bullsh:t. What about all the government land in the Eastern Cape and KZN. The old Transkei and Ciskei???

      bones.mathambo - 2012-09-05 09:41

      Joe Blogg - 2014-02-21 16:39

  • hein.huyser - 2012-09-05 08:14

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-24 06:44

How about Tokyo Sexwale transferring back all the land that Lynn Brown quickly signed over to another authority hours before vacating her lost office? ANC unscrupulously devious bunch of destroyers and WHY are people nearing their deathbeds like Fransman still in the "Youth" League?

  • Riaan Louw - 2013-06-17 19:55

There are 2 things that need to change. Houses are not the way forward. Flats (walk-up housing to be more precise) are way better and more sustainable and will add to the densities of the city. Also, developing outside of the city or on the edges should not be encouraged, as we should not develop on good agricultural land. Food security will be key in the next few decades. There are some strategic open sites in the city that can be developed e.g. Ysterplaat, that are well located and accessible to within the city's services like public transport. The RDP model DOESN'T work. Its been proven and documented. Ask any RDP inhabitant...

  • Joe Blogg - 2014-02-21 16:34

I would like a free house in Constantia or Tokai too, please. Thank you.
