Cautious reaction to Ramphele's new party

2013-02-18 13:00

Johannesburg - Political parties reacted cautiously to Mamphela Ramphele’s announcement on Monday that she had formed a "party political platform".

"The Democratic Alliance takes note of Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s announcement today that she intends to engage South Africans about the formation of a new political party in the coming months," said Mmusi Maimane, spokesperson for the official opposition in Parliament.

"Dr Ramphele shares the DA’s core values of non-racialism and constitutionalism, and her move is another step in the long process of realigning South African politics around these values," he said.

"Helen Zille has been actively working on realigning politics since she was elected leader of the DA in 2007, with the aim of building a new majority at the centre of South African politics. We will continue to engage with Dr Ramphele in the coming months," Maimane said.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa welcomed Ramphele's decision.

"We look forward to working with Dr Ramphele in our efforts to build a strong political alternative for the people of South Africa."

After weeks of speculation that she was planning to form a political party, Ramphele made her announcement at the old Women's Gaol, at Constitution Hill, in Braamfontein.

"Today, I announce that I am working with a group of fellow citizens to form a party political platform that will focus on rekindling hope that building the country of our dreams is possible in our lifetime," she said.

"We launch this initiative under the name Agang, or in the Nguni languages of our country, Akhani, which can be interpreted in English as 'Build South Africa'," she said.

One of its aims would be to "declare war on corruption".

It was reported last year that Ramphele had turned down an invitation to join the DA.

    cANCer can be beaten

      werner.nel.984786 - 2013-02-18 13:09

War on Corruption! The ANC must be shaking in its pants! Because even the voting fodder are getting tired of Zuma and his lies.

      thando.gqabaza - 2013-02-18 13:11

Question - is this good for the opposition or will this split the opposition? If we want the ANC out , will this aid that or harm it ?

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 13:17

She has the right ideas. Bring parties together. New votes will follow. There are many disillusioned people out there who'll vote. Remember we can win even if we lose an election! We just need to prevent the ANC from getting the majority vote.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-18 13:20

R3ndi3r. She was offered Helen Zille's post, so what are you on about?.

      eslin.meyer - 2013-02-18 13:31

R3 She did not say it. The DA spokesperson said that. That is the problem with News 24. They will forever get any person from the DA to comment on anything.

      mongwadi - 2013-02-18 13:33

Everyone calm down, the Dr has a cure for cANCer, that's all we need.

      misstee.langhein - 2013-02-18 13:37

Actuallt R3ndi3r, id say the reason she didnt want to join the DA is because if she had joined the DA, there would be no chance at all of beating the ANC, because now that she is starting a seperate party most of our nation that are voting ANC are having a change in mind and are moving over from the ANC to AGang, id say her starting a new party gives SA a better chance of getting rid of the ANC. This woman has my vote!

      Matthew - 2013-02-18 13:39

Time will tell.Curious to see how the cANCer will respong to her in terms or of feeling threated.who will through the first political punch.

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-02-18 14:09

SA is desperate for honest leadership... Good news indeed.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2013-02-18 14:26

Her first failing is aligning Agang with the DA.......

      Poloyatonki - 2013-02-18 14:41

      She has my vote.

      adrien.mcguire - 2013-02-18 14:54

Mamphela, please don't surround yourself with people of dubious character and cast-offs from other parties. You need to create a party of squeaky clean individuals, whose desire is to rid this country of a corrupt serving party and deliver this country to the greatness it is capable of !

      Kawasaki1985 - 2013-02-18 15:40

She is welcome to politics, however, will further fragment the opposition. Lets hope her 'platform' is a vehicle to unite opposition parties !!!

      Nunu - 2013-02-18 20:03

Weakened maybe, but I promise you they will not be beaten in next years election, not even a slight chance.

  • criticallyhonest - 2013-02-18 13:05

Whilst Ms Ramphele's new party may present some problems for individual party's that are in opposition to the anc, I can only hope that it presents a bigger problem to the anc itself! The DA must now really concentrate on not losing support and votes whilst Agang should concentrate on reducing the anc majority rather than undermining the existing opposition groups. We will see!!!!!

      mandla.dlamini.524 - 2013-02-18 15:00

you are playing like kids, all what is happening we know it in advanced as anc, all sellout they come and failed and disappear. may you pleas read some books of David icke, maphemaphela, the truth shall set you free. u study from the countries who have innocent blood in their hands, britain ,america. mapheere the truth shall set you free, they were rob their land ,gpold, diamond, even their intelletual integrity are you going to restore them. oh my dear inde lendlela esihambayo.

  • peter.ndamase - 2013-02-18 13:08

Good luck Dr, you have just given away your private life to serve the masses, know that the opposition will start digging on your skeletons. Remain strong and be open to any investigations. If you can eat up "20%" of the ANC they will be finished!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-18 13:23

Peter, ndamase. Yes I wonder how long it will be before we read about her son Hlumelo Biko not paying his hotel bill in 2010.

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-18 13:31

curriemafia - but come election time they will keep voting ANC and remain poor.

      luke.dekoker - 2013-02-18 13:34

sivuyile.baleni, it may not be easy to get the CancER click with their lies & corruption out but to reduce their voter numbers will be a good start. Anything other than CancER is better for all South Africans.

Thank God we have something new to talk about. The way the media is milking the pistorius story is beyond belief. If the guy farts it would make headlines. Some of the racist comments from both sides are really nauseating too. Its getting dry and boring. Now that I've got that off my chest, Welcome Auntie Ramphele. I hope you are succesfull in your endeavours. Stay strong girl, its gone be a bumpy ride. That lot in the ruling party must be frothing at the mouth, waiting eagerly to throw a punch at you. P.s they hate it if you tell them the truth about their corrupt ways.

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 13:29

I agree on Oscar Pistorius saga... ad infinitum. This news is like a fresh breeze. I like what she proposes and believe she can make a difference but only if we support her. I sincerely hope so! Or will everyone just continue whining while doing nothing?

  • amanda.matthews.14811 - 2013-02-18 13:22

I think that the name Agang has an unfortunate connotation. We already have too many gangsters and gangs in S.A. Perhaps the Lady could be advised on a more suitable name which everyone in the Country can relate to. The name should also be more inclusive of all South Africans. How about the BSA party?

      lolo.luke.50 - 2013-02-18 13:33

i couldn't have said it better, i don't like the name at all. i feel excluded as an SA child. such a disappointment.

I'd suggest a competition to find the best name. Imagine the exposure and response!

  • Jeremy - 2013-02-18 13:24

So what exactly are the differences between Ramphele's political principles and those of the DA? Maybe she's starting her own party simply because she's a one-man show and would rather be a big fish in her own small pond than a much smaller fish in the DA's much bigger pond! Ultimately her party will be another 2 percenter which, at some stage in the future will, like Patricia de Lille's ID, get swallowed by the DA.

  • wicus.berg - 2013-02-18 13:26

Should've joined with the DA to form an even stronger opposition. Hopefully they'll join before election 2014 to beat the ANC.. Now that'll be a day of celebration for all of us!

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 14:15

  • Rashida Patel - 2013-02-18 13:28

Well wishes to ms ramphele and agang ...has my vote for the good of my country. Just wish was another name though.

  • kuschke1 - 2013-02-18 13:28

I sincerely hope the group of "fellow citizens" are people of integrity as Dr Ramphele is. None of the political opportunists we have so many of in South Africa. The DA, unfortunately, does not have the credibility or the trust of most South Africans and has reached its maximum size. The other opposition parties only serve a narrow band of interests. Hopefully Akhani will become a viable alternative to the rotten carcass that is the ANC.

      Jeremy - 2013-02-18 13:58

If you honestly believe the DA has reached its "maximum size" then you're badly misinformed. It will almost cedrtainly take a third (33%) of the votes in 2014. It would take even more if people like Ms Ramphele realised that their own interests are secondary to those of the country.

      kuschke1 - 2013-02-18 14:48

It is Dr Ramphele and in your wildest dreams will the DA get a third of the votes in 2014. For that you will have to have credible leaders, not whining amazons. As long as the DA is controlled and run by whites, no matter how good and honourable their policies, they will not make a significant impact on the South African political landscape

      maria.roth.589 - 2013-02-18 16:11

Who do you vote for let me guess. Your nonsensical allusion to the DA as a white party controlled by whites is the ANC party line and not the truth. Add up the percentages of what you consider white parties and extrapolate it is just not possible or the DA to be a white party. Get your head out of your pelvic region and give your brain some oxygen before you start talking. Why don't you attend a public meeting and see for your self. Akhani will sink or swim on the strength of their policies but, if you are going to start lying and DA bashing at this early stage you will go the way of Cope believe me.

      jacowium - 2013-02-18 19:32

@ Maria Roth: If you're trying to imply that the majority of voters view the DA as a "black party", then you certainly need a strong injection of reality. Yes, there are many black members, and some are in leadership positions, we know that. Now, have you never heard those members being described as 'coconuts' or sellouts by the ANC-brigades? I'm afraid that kind of mud sticks, whether it's the truth or not. A political party set up and managed by a black person, has in the long run a far, far better chance to seriously challenge the ANC, than the DA ever will have. If you can't understand the principles (or numbers) behind that, then again, I suggest you get reintroduced to the South African reality. If Ms Ramphele fails, it'll be a pity, but at least someone gave it a go. And I'll support that initiative. (I've supported the DA all along, but mostly due to there not being any better alternatives around.)

  • musamoyo2004 - 2013-02-18 13:29

So is the ANC jus gonna sit n let SA go down e drain again.

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 13:32

The ANC can be glad someone is throwing them a lifeline or they'll go down in history as the party who destroyed SA.

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-18 13:33

ANC is not sitting, they are actively pulling the flusher

      misstee.langhein - 2013-02-18 13:49

Erm, the ANC is the reason to SA's downfall...Really wake up. Honestly, Zuma has not done any good for this country but people still vote for him even though al he does is promise without deliverence. Dr Ramphele might just be what SA needs.

  • raschid.appoles - 2013-02-18 13:30

Great news. South African opposition parties ought to place vision on coalition politics. This is characteristic of most Western European and Scandinavian models. It's the true way to go and puts the country first before party politics and egos

  • theboet - 2013-02-18 13:30

Wishing all the best to Agang. Until now there were 2 bulls in the kraal which they shared with chickens and rats in terms of ignominy. The new party will attract thinkers whose mindset are not trapped into the black or white boxes as is currently the case.

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 13:35

      My thoughts exactly, boet!

      maria.roth.589 - 2013-02-18 16:29

theboet You actually deserve the ANC. We keep telling you and telling you the DA is not a white party. Retract your head and climb out of your tree and attend a DA meeting and see for your self whether or not they are a white party. It's people like you with your stubborn suborning of the truth that has cursed us with the ANC for so long.

  • lolo.luke.50 - 2013-02-18 13:30

she should reconsider the name, come up with a name that includes everybody.

      jacowium - 2013-02-18 19:40

The name can be translated as "Build South Africa". That definitely includes me, and other South Africans interested in building. Which is in stark contrast to the "I am entitled to riches & privileges" culture of the ANC.

  • swessels1 - 2013-02-18 13:49

Yes Yes. The ANC shall fall

  • luckymthiyane - 2013-02-18 13:55

  • amanda.matthews.14811 - 2013-02-18 13:59

True, that she did get her funding overseas. The USA being one Country. If she was so confident about her new party then why couldnt she get funding here in S.A. ??

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 14:39

To avoid the ANC claiming corruption like with the DA recently?

      matimu.civil - 2013-02-18 14:56

      to avoid ur dirty money!

  • kevin.moxham.3 - 2013-02-18 14:02

A person of integrity who fought against the wrongs of the past and who like many others do not support what the ANC has become (a racialistic and corrupt party). Will the ANC now lable this stateswomen a 'coconut' when in fact she has sacrificed more in the struggle than any of the cadres who today falsely try to 'claim that fame'...lets wait and see...??????

      maria.roth.589 - 2013-02-18 16:59

Yes, Kevin well said their false claims and their murderous and corrupt ways must not be allowed to hinder the march of democracy in this country. The claims of the ANC as the liberators of this country fool only those who are totally ignorant of history. They are a destructive, racialistic, divisive, materialistic bunch of carpetbaggers, who fiddle the books while South Africa burns.

  • kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-02-18 14:04

I think Dr Ramphele is going to smell the coffee after the next elections. She probably would not get enough support to secure even 1 seat in parliament. Her value system seems campatible with that of the DA. I think she passed up a wonderfull opportunity by turning Zille down. The DA is and will remain the only credible opposition to the ANC in the forseeable future.

  • phumi.ntlabati - 2013-02-18 14:05

Not a single spiritual leader or preacher came to bless this party. Only the ANC was annointed by the man of cloth and traditional leaders. There is more to running a country than fighting corruption. There is no common political ideology that our people share with Ramphele, that is why AGAN will not take off. Even if Steve Biko was alive he would have been part of this goverment and a card carrying member of the ANC!

      djmain1 - 2013-02-18 14:13

Bwaaahahahaha If think Steve Biko would have anything to do with that bunch of thieves, you've got rocks in your head. Phantsi cANCer, phantsi!!!

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-18 14:19

And why should a spiritual leader bless anything?

      Peter Zylstra - 2013-02-18 14:28

Why must she get a stone age witch doctor to bless her party? She did nothing wrong unlike the anc mob who mostly committed terror deeds?

      visser.jooste - 2013-02-18 14:55

Why? Won't we go to heaven if we vote for her?

  • clive.pops.5 - 2013-02-18 14:06

I'm sure her party will be a raging success. From all the "she's got my vote" comments I read, she actually has to do just about squat. She has made no political statement of an substance, yet "she's got my vote." Is this a good thing?

  • @Tk.com_liberal - 2013-02-18 14:07

As opposed to COPE n UDM, this formation is not motivated by anger or power contest! Wishing you well Dr.

  • netswera.livhuwani - 2013-02-18 14:13

I support DR Mamphela Ramphele’s new political party. It is high time the people of South Africa start to think of an alternative organization that has the best of the people at heart,a selfless organization with the aim of building South Africa into a prosperous country that all people living in it can be proud of,A country that doesn't accept corruption and self enrichment. An accountable government that listens to the needs of its citizens,A government that doesn't prey on the vulnerability of it people.A government that its deliverables speak for its self, not a lip service government.A government that cares for real.People lets rally behind this lady in the cumming elections.Lets vote for Agang.Lets help her build South Africa

      maria.roth.589 - 2013-02-18 17:10

But if you feel like this why did you not vote for the DA? Is it because at heart you listen to the ANC even when you think you don't? Is it because you at heart you will not vote for what you have been told by the ANC is a white party. You have had these options all the time but racialism has blinded your eyes and made you vote for a party that you now can see has robbed and neglected you, made promises and kept none of them.
