Johannesburg - The ANC policy conference was a success, secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Friday.

"All documents were discussed without fear or favour, all participated without any suppression," he told reporters after the conference in Midrand.

He said the proposal from the policy conference were recommendations to the national elective conference in Mangaung, Free State in December.

"The test lies with Mangaung where proposals will be adopted."

He said people predicted that there would be "blood on the floor" and that did not happen.

"That is the nature of the ANC. The debates were robust, delegates participated freely."

Head of policy Jeff Radebe said he was happy about the progress of the conference.

13 documents

"I am happy of what I have seen of young people participating in the debate, the ANC has a future," he said.

The ANC held its policy conference in Midrand dealing with 13 documents.

Radebe said the real test now was to prepare for the elective conference in Mangaung.

ANC leaders denied that the conference was marred by groupings supporting president Jacob Zuma and his deputy Kgalema Motlanthe.

Delegates were seen waving placards reading: "Limpopo 100% Zuma, North West 100% Zuma," while others waved two fingers in the air, interpreted as calling for second term for Zuma, with those wanting Motlanthe to lead the ANC after Mangaung waving their hands in circles -interpreted as calling for change or replacement.

Radebe said as far as he was concern the conference was about policy not leadership succession.
