Cosatu congratulates ANC on 101 years

2013-01-10 13:30

Johannesburg - Cosatu has sent a letter to ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe, wishing the organisation well on its 101st anniversary.

Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi wished the party "another 101 years of existence" in the letter, which was dated 8 January - the day of the anniversary.

"The ANC has for 101 years led our people and inspired millions more across the continent and the globe to fight for freedom and democracy," Vavi wrote.

"Guided by your primary principle of selflessness, you have been one of the finest examples of [a] progressive liberation movement."

Vavi said the ANC had survived because it had made a point of trying to alleviate poverty.

"It has been a voice for the voiceless. It has stood shoulder to shoulder with exploited workers," he wrote. "The ANC must continue doing that."

Vavi said this year also marked the centenary of the Native Land Act.

"We sadly mark the centenary of the... act which legalised theft of the land by an invading foreign army that occupied our country by force.

"No stone must be left unturned to reverse this ugly page in our history."

Vavi saluted those who had fought against apartheid in their youth, and the role played by "our mothers".

"These brave women led countless marches, often serving as an inspiration to the masses as [a] whole to fight not only against national oppression, but also against women’s exploitation."

Working class

He said the working class had always been the backbone of the liberation struggle.

"We are particularly pleased to note that workers have always played a leading role and provided the finest leaders to the ANC," Vavi said.

"The history of the workers’ struggles and those of the ANC are not separable."

Vavi said unity in the alliance between the ANC, Cosatu and the SA Communist Party was critical.

"We hope that the ANC will mobilise the majority of South Africans to realise all the objectives it set for itself in its national conferences, in particular for total economic emancipation.

"The next 101 years of the ANC must be characterised by heightened mass action for the total emancipation of black people in general and Africans in particular from economic bondage," he said.

yes mr Vavi but a lot still needs to be done to unite the citizens of this country . If you still have places for midle class and lower class you are still far behind to claim the country is free for everyone.

There is nothing to congratulate - nothing to be proud of. We have spiraling crime, old people and children who are hungry and raped, younger healthy people who cannot find work - then we have government that is unable to run the country because they have taken public funds for themselves, we have new babies dying in hospitals because of mismanagement we have the sick dying because the budget for the repair of vital equipment has been spent (certainly not where it was supposed to be spent) and then we have the ANC with a president spending millions on feathering his nest and having parties sipping champagne and eating cake while those who voted them into power starve - nice one boys and girls. Happy 2013.

Apartheid is over and i'm so thankful. Thank you ANC, but your are doing a useless job currently and you should be ashamed because you are leading this country to its new lowest of lows. You have failed you people and your country. We have become a country lead by rapist's and criminals. Don't know how you can sleep at night with the shame knowing that you are ruining the name of a once great party, You will be remembered for your failers not your success, no matter how long you keep pushing it in your votes faces. I can not express in words my total discussgust i have for you as a party but this was an attempt. Please learn to love all south Africans and they will love you back.

Last year 100 years, in January 101 years, lets also celebrate 101 years 1 month - 101 years 1 month 15 days, 101 years 2 months 2 days 4 hours, 101 years 3 months 4 days 6 hours and 27 seconds... let's just celebrate ALL the time, more champagne, more Blue Label, more caviar, more for the fatcats - who gives a damn about the people... • musawakhe.ngubane - 2013-01-10 14:16

Thank you comrade Vavi. It's been a very long, long way to freedom in the past 101 years. Now is the time to deal with this huge gap created by the imperialist, of inequality as indicated by the 2011 Census report. We just need to work together as alliance partners and the entire MDM to improve the plight of the majority Black people of our beloved country. We need to rally behind our farm workers in Western Cape and the entire country who are exploited by white farm owners. Thanks cde SG! The January 8 statement will guide us towards socio-economic liberation for our masses. Yindle lendlela, just as the President stated. ANC lives, ANC leads!

the craddle of mankind is 50kms northwest of jo' is said that man descends from a pri(ape)mate.theres seems to be some truth in it look at the way africa is some russian scientists made a startling discovery in siberia.they discovered fossiles that indicate that somewhere along the evolution chain,a mutation happened and it produced a white pri(ape) is also proved that this white pri(ape)mate evolved so fast it out classed the black pri(ape)mate makes me wonder

  • kuno.tschumi.5 - 2013-01-10 14:36

"Guided by your primary principle of selflessness, you have been one of the finest examples of [a] progressive liberation movement." That's exactly the problem we now have in this country with a corrupt uneducated government. they still think they a movement and have not grasped the fact that they are a political party who should lead a country. they still think they struggle and they need to liberate someone or something. Get with the program and start acting as a political party and do your job and work for the betterment of all the people living in this country.

      sven.gohre - 2013-01-10 16:52

But Kuno they ARE a movement, a bowel movement. Always full of the brown stuff.

      rowan.clark.10 - 2013-01-10 18:08

A revolution turns once. These guys don't get it , are they governing or revolutionaries . I think they like the easy path of saying we are struggling instead of saying we are leading because then they would need everybody to follow there lead which is,poor delivery and division. When will we all be equal in this country ,never not with politicians in the middle as it suits them to have discrepancies.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2013-01-10 20:56

Zuma would rather just spend R250 state funds on his private residence - very selfless indeed. How the F does a Communist Party exist in 2013 FFS - This failed ideology is dead and buried a long time ago!!!

      William Mohlolo - 2013-01-10 17:00

More than 300 years of criminal activities, punishments, corruption, killings, oppression, suffering, inequalities, hard living, robberies, hard labour, insults and all those sort of bad things you can think about black people were in. What a shame!!!

  • qhama.bona - 2013-01-10 14:53

Even though the ANC has distinguished itself as a voice of the downtrodden masses over the past 101 years, one gets the feeling that they are starting to relinquish that moral high ground. Today some see the ANC as a tool to enrich themselves and those close to them. When the likes of John Langalibalele Dube, Sol Plaatjie and Co formed the in 1912 they did not not do it to enrich themselves. Instead they formed it to liberate the people of South Africa. Their successors (Luthuli, Tambo, Mandela, Sisulu and Co) continued in the same trend as they sacrificed their lives to gain freedom for the people of South Africa. However when democracy was gained in 1994 suddenly the party had different responsibilities. From a liberation movement the ANC had to transform itself to a modern governing party. If one is objective, it is clear to see that the ANC has changed the lives of our people. But it has also made some unforgivable blunders along the way. Those blunders have not been used against it because the majority still vote for it. However the ANC still continues to undermine the masses by having its senior leaders being embroiled in damaging scandals. The time has come for this once great liberation movement to cleanse itself of the perverse tendencies it has acquired as a result of being the ruling party. With the 2014 elections around the corner, the ANC will have to give the electorate valid reasons as to why it should for it.

      Pomster - 2013-01-10 15:26

Let them get voted out once and they will soon see change there ways. Cant hope for them to change, we as the people need to force them, vote them out SA wont end with one term run by DA or COOP.

  • William Mohlolo - 2013-01-10 15:25

What I like about Mr Vavi is, he don't keep quite when things go wrong! He congratulate where congratulations needed. Thanks for that!!! Yes Anc take time to deliver for the masses and yes some of its leaders are using it as a way towards riches and turn it to be corrupt organization. Anc was formed to free black people from cruel south african apartheid government and its shameless, heartless and killers of those years. Now that we have democratic country, everybody even those who helped their cruel masters can talk and criticise. During those years blacks didn't have a chance to speak their minds. Its nice to live in democratic south africa because former oppressors can come out and criticise former oppressed like there is something they did to help in bringing democracy in this country. Oppressors stand proudly and call our democratic leaders uneducated forgetting that they (oppressors) are the reason for the suffering of black people in this country. Corruption, lack of education, killings and all wrong things done by black man is the result of apartheid. Oppressors locked black man out when they equip themselves with education and life skills. The only thing Anc leaders thought about was to see free south africa for all. Tears rolled and believe me are not yet try not until we are equal in this country. Now is the time to speed up equality, service delivery and transformation. Former oppressed will work together with former oppressors who are willing to move this country forward. Let those who cry for the return of apartheid cry till they die, we are not goin back never!! You can't change mind of racist so live racist to die on his wishes while we live for the future.

      werner.maartens.1 - 2013-01-10 17:49

You are so stupid it is actually funny. It is no longer about black or white, but about what our country needs. What we do not need is an incompetent president, incompetent and corrupt cabinet. And we really do not need silly comments from stupid people as yourself. The cANCer is running this fine Country into the ground, and brainwashed idiots as yourself are to stupid and short sighted tobrealise

      werner.maartens.1 - 2013-01-10 17:50

to realize it. They will continue on this road until nothing is left.

  • maureen.churchill.9 - 2013-01-10 15:39
