DA: Mbalula must clarify Olympic expenses

2012-08-03 21:23

Johannesburg - Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula must tell Parliament how much his department spent on its trip to London, the DA said on Friday.

"We are particularly interested in hearing whether the state footed the bill for Julius Malema’s stay in the luxurious Corinthia Hotel in London," Democratic Alliance MP Winston Rabotapi said in a statement.

"The DA will not rest until we know how much of the people’s money Minister Mbalula has spent on this trip."

Earlier, Mbalula denied claims that he or the sport department footed the bill for Malema's London stay.

Rabotapi said Parliament was still awaiting answers to questions on how funding from the National Lottery and private sponsorships for the Olympics was used. It was also waiting to hear how many officials from the department were attending the games.

He said Mbalula had a tendency to spend public money on parties and junkets.

"Last year, his department spent R45.9m on the annual sports award ceremony, with R8m coming from the National Lottery Board [despite being earmarked for Olympic athletes] and R12.1m from the department of sports and recreation," said Rabotapi.

"Responses to DA questions on ministerial flights revealed last year that Minister Mbalula and his deputy have spent a combined total of over R2.6m on 345 domestic and international flights since 1 April 2010."

He said the sport department had a R36.9m budget for travel and subsistence.

The DA was also interested in the costs relating to the Ekhaya Hospitality Centre, an intergovernmental initiative spearheaded by the department.

"The department is reportedly refusing to disclose information on the costs involved in the running of the centre and the various entertainment acts that will be staged there over the next six weeks," said Rabotapi.

Parliamentary questions should help determine how funding allocated to athletes compared to that spent by government officials at the Olympics.

"Minister Mbalula must prove to us that our athletes’ performance is his top priority," said Rabotapi.

  • ditoare.gypsy - 2012-08-03 21:40

Eish too much speed DA, the olympics are not over. The guy suppose to give the report after everything is finished and wraped-up, you were supose to ask him before the olympic start to how much is he budgeted for this, than later must bring report with breakdowns. Then all the money missing without receipt you can start investigating if it wasn't footing Malemaz bill. Eish hold your horses DA

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-03 21:51

Olympics are only held once every 4 years - and most teams take 4-7 years to prepare. The Olympics do not have to be over to know where money allocated in that time, has actually gone to. They're at the Olympics already - so whatever money was allocated has been spent. We as citizens and tax-payers, have the right to ask where it all went to.

Why is he back before the end??? Missing the land of milk and honey, The English will not put up with this fool and this friends.

      mihaip007 - 2012-08-04 02:57

I think that the DA is simply exasperated and how much money is being spent that they simply want to put a stop to it WHILEST it is hapenning! Shame they REALLY have our best interest at heart, even if they have to put questions now and not later when the money has been spent. THEN we need a commission of inquiries and more millions to be spent in figuring out who took the money and for what, then find the guilty and shift them to different positions, while the money is lost WITH interest! Go for it DA..!

  • Elizabeth Jerling - 2012-08-03 22:18

wouldn't it be great if the Government spent less on parties etc and allocated more to the Country's sports?

  • Tlotlo Phele - 2012-08-04 00:37

DA should really learn to know which battles to fight, they gonna end up wanting to know how much anc spends on toilet paper

      lerato.kay.3 - 2012-08-04 08:05

There is bo real opposition party in SA; DA is a lobby group no serious party will appoint Seremani for a Presidential candidate

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-04 11:48

Tlolo, so it is alright for them to spend taxpayers money on parties and what have you?. Do they buy toilet paper?.

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-08-04 03:37

Mbalula in open defiance of Zoomster's wishes said he sees his buddy Juliass everyday and will continue to do so !! Good bye Mbalula? or is it cheers Peckerspear ??

  • danie.smit.587 - 2012-08-04 05:23

Best joke, Fikile did not pay Malema expenses , to go to London and bad mouth Zuma, while reducing investment and jobs to his supporters in SA. But did we every single tax payer in SA contribute a few rands ? Even the poorest of the poor on All Pay, with their VAT on airtime

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-08-04 07:50

Its good to know that the DA won't rest until this saga is explained. I wish they could do the same about the boeremag who shot and killed a 14yr old and got away with R75k and a suspended sentence. Oh sorry forget this black kid we got rhinos being killed everyday!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-04 11:55

Lerato, hating the whites the way you do is really sad. Funny how you forget the eighty something woman raped by a black man. Or is that just fine in your book?. What would you like the DA to do about the boeremag?. You are a bitter individual forced to live in a country with a minority you love to hate. Is this how you hide your shortcomings?. Oh yes and while we are at it, the Rhinos are as much part of your heritage as they are of your grandchildren, maybe you can respect that. Although I very much doubt you being capable of respecting anything or anyone for that matter.

      butch.grealy - 2012-08-05 17:04

Please remind me what happened to the kid(s) who killed ET? What is self defence? when does the killing stop? Isn't it sad that we have to rely on the DA with their provincial budget to find justice and truth?

      puratwani - 2012-08-08 18:17

You are being UN-HUMAN lareto Whatever your name is

  • sisa.mtwana - 2012-08-04 11:10

DA why are you not asking how much was spent? When cricket or rugby are doing their international tours? To me this look/smell like racism. Malema have nothing to do with SA Olympic Team in London. Here in London each country is allocated venues to show case their culture is music , art and design etc hence Ekhaya Hospitality center in south bank. The Chinese are in the next building. I think this helps the country in varies ways be it tourism or bring in new investors to SA. This event at EKhaya Home from Home is free entry. It also were all S.Africans who are visiting can have a place to feel at home away from home. Personally I think its money well spent. If there is any waste yes question should be asked after the games are over and everyone is home and safe. South Africa have won three gold medals so far . Viva South Africa Viva we are behind you Team SA. Stop looking for foul play were the is not.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-04 11:57

Sisa, Malema there then to show case your culture?. That must have been hilarious.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-04 11:46

Charity organizations knocking on the door of the Lottery Board finds the door locked. But lots of money for Mabula and the rest of the leeches. Why are we surprised?.

  • tony.naidoo - 2012-08-04 13:39

Simple ! R5billion for KFC for juju !

  • vivian.harris.73 - 2012-08-06 06:39

Not much use to the people if the money was already spent. Nothing can be done if he did spend a huge amount of money and pay for Malema. A slap on the wrist and its back to business as usual.
