Johannesburg - Voter support for the DA in the North West is increasing, the party said on Thursday.

"The Democratic Alliance in the North West is elated by the growth it recorded in the 7th August by-elections in the three wards in which it participated," DA leader in the province Chris Hattingh said in a statement.

"The growth in DA support during these by-elections confirms the upward growth trend established in 2011 when it recorded a 116% growth in comparison to the 2006 local government elections results," he said.

The African National Congress retained control of ward nine in Tlokwe with 738 votes out of 1 458 valid votes cast at two polling stations in the area, according to preliminary results.

The DA got 196 votes.

In Mahikeng, the ANC lost ward four to an independent candidate who secured 49.21% of the votes.

The governing party retained wards in Rustenburg, Ratlou, Mahikeng, Ditsobotla, Ganyesa, Ramotshere Moiloa, and Tlokwe.
