Cape Town -  Internal squabbling within the DA could scupper the party’s plans to take over Gauteng in next year’s elections after the succession battle for Helen Zille’s position turned nasty.

According to the Sunday Independent, supporters of Lindiwe Mazibuko and Mmusi Maimane are pitting the two against each other. DA parliamentary leader Mazibuko has been accused of wasting money after allegedly hiring a chauffeur-driven Mercedes Benz in London recently at the cost of R35 000. Her supporters have in turn accused the party of providing four bodyguards for Maimane, despite him being a low security risk.

Mazibuko and Maimane have been named as contenders to replace Zille when she steps down as party leader in 2015. But this week insiders said there was growing dissatisfaction about Mazibuko’s leadership. However, her spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube said the allegations were untrue and were the work of people trying to sow divisions ahead of the elections.
