DA poster shocking: Christian Party

2012-01-24 14:06

Cape Town - A DA Student Organisation poster showing a young mixed race couple in a passionate embrace is "shocking", the Christian Democratic Party said on Tuesday.

"At a stage when the country needs higher levels of morality, the DA launches a poster clearly promoting sexual immorality," party leader Theunis Botha said.

"There are many ways in which the DA could have projected its image as a non-racial party, rather than using a poster clearly promoting sexual promiscuity."

Botha said the poster was "distasteful to the extreme" and an insult to the many young people, black and white, who uphold high moral values.

"In a country with high levels of Aids and an overdose of crime, especially the high incidence of farm murders this year, this poster sends the opposite message to the country than needed."

The poster carried a tagline reading: "In our future you wouldn't look twice".

It received widespread attention on Monday after it was posted online by DA Youth leader Makashule Gana.

Debate about race

Gana said the poster was part of a campaign to create debate about race.

"To say that the poster is sexual is taking it to the extreme. The poster is saying a lot. They are embracing each other, and it shows in this country that we can find an opportunity to embrace each other.

"I don't know why there are negative comments about it. It is a work of art that depicts a future that we [the DA] would want to build."

Gana put the picture up on his Facebook page, and briefly used it as his Twitter avatar.

The picture elicited differing comments on both social networking sites.

A Facebook user said: "The nakedness completely diverts from the intended message of political togetherness. Unless politics really is all about sex?"

Another user said: "I don’t see something sexual. They did this pic [sic] very well. The pose, the embrace, their expressions. It looks convincing, it looks like love, it looks beautiful."

One Twitter user asked: "Is the DA campaigning on behalf of white sugar-daddies who go after young native chicks?"

Another tweeted: "In my future, I hope those damn townships are gone in Cape Town and all the blacks have moved into Camps Bay to share that view."

  • modo - 2012-01-24 14:14

How on earth does this promote sexual promiscuity? Do they not take into account that the couple may be married?

      Twain - 2012-01-24 14:17

Maybe that says something about the CDPs dirty, dirty thoughts?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-24 14:19

      @Twain, spot one fella!

      Billy - 2012-01-24 14:23

My thoughts exactly. Why would the CDP assume the relationship is illicit? I am a Christian too, but their kneejerk reaction does their own cause no good. The poster is making the point that in a DA future, no-one would look at the race of the couple - only a verkrampte like Theunis Botha would look at it with the old Immorality Act as his point of reference.

      procold2 - 2012-01-24 14:29

see the poster for what it is and the message the DA youth wanted to get across, there is a lot more that you see everyday that promotes promisuity

      Godfrey - 2012-01-24 14:30

What a load of hypocritical Hansie/Joost Christian morality. You know, the myth that believer in the invisible magic man are more moral citizens than normal people. The CDM also exposes its racist apartheid roots and I am sure they would have said nothing if the partners were the same colour. There is no substantive evidence for an omnipotent father-figure deity as postulated by the Christian/Jewish/Islamic tradition. So without religion can there be morality? Certainly, because true moral behavior is based upon simple self-interest. The guiding ethic is to truly act in your own best interest. That would mean treating all people fairly, honestly and, as it says in the Hippocratic Oath, "Cause no harm." Religions invent all other "sins" to increase their control over people. Trying to express offense is just another method of trying to control what other do.

      Craig - 2012-01-24 14:34

Love the poster. Reminds me of the "United Colours" ad campaign from Benetton. Well done DA YL.

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 14:45

@CdeSganja - only a dim witted fool would see that in the poster... probably the reason why you saw it..... tell me do they let people with IQ below ten on PC's where you are now days..... or do they still have to supervise you to make sure you dont hurt your brain thinking.

      Nevilenofriends - 2012-01-24 14:45

He is so far of the mark it's laughable, how does he detract promiscuity, violence & aids from that poster! ... His remarks are embarrassing, and I think clearly eludes to some deep seeded prejudice on his side? See you don’t need reason / evidence to be religious ... only “faith” ... & this is a very good example of why that’s not such a good idea. LOL “the whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts” – Bertrand Russell

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 14:50

@CdeSganja - not defensive at all, the only picture I see in the one in front of me.... I'll admint it's probably over your head as it's not drawn in crayon, so I'll forgive you for thinking there's some bigger picture....

      Lynn - 2012-01-24 14:54

EXACTLY my thoughts!! These "christians" are just racists in disguise.

      mahlelu - 2012-01-24 15:04

Does the poster only cater for married people. First glance of this picture of half naked people, i see something sexual. Keeping in mind that its not only the youth that will be seeing this poster, what about the elderly and our kids??? This is an inappropiate picture!!!

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 15:05

@CdeSganja - it's so sad that this has to be explained.... but with a person with your condition (stupidity) I'll take the time..... if... they... had....clothes... .... would.... have .... looked... twice..... wow trying to write in a way. It's sad that this caused so much comment but it goes to show how racist allot of the blacks really are... I know allot of the whites are racists.... but to expose all the so called non-racist blacks was interesting... don’t worry you don’t fall into either category, you’re not bright enough yet.

      Twain - 2012-01-24 15:05

@CdeSganja - You can. You totally can embrace someone if their not wearing any clothes. Regardless that isn't the point here. The point is that you immediately saw the woman being taken advantage of when there is nothig (NOTHING!) indicating that. It could just as well (and is probably intended) to be a consensual relationship, maybe even a married one. But you apparently can't see that.

      Wes - 2012-01-24 15:13

      Married and on the beach

      CdeSganja - 2012-01-24 15:14

Prof Kyle the most educated human being, please don't call me an idiot. You are too defensive I will not argue with you. @Twain you are not making any sense.

      Moi - 2012-01-24 15:17

CdeSganja - "Can you embrace a person while you are not wearing? I think Gana is lost." Yup. It can be done. In fact, it's something I do on a regular basis and you know what? It doesn't lead to anything sexual.

      madiahv - 2012-01-24 15:18

I don't care about the fact that the couple are from different races, I do however care about the fact that they appear to be naked. I don't believe that people can actually miss the sexual element in the picture and I don't want my young daughter exposed to that, especially in our country with its high incidence of Aids. I would have felt exactly the same if the couple were of the same race. And yes, they may very well be married, but even then I would find it inappropriate. I'm with CdeSganja on this one, tired of women (of any race) being depicted as sex objects.

      Simon - 2012-01-24 15:20

you have to wonder if the CDP's indignance is at the pose or the fact that it is mixed race pose. Seems the predjudice amongst this population is as deep as ever? I think it is an awesome poster and an ideal which would be awesome to live under!!

      CdeSganja - 2012-01-24 15:21

@madiahv thank you for seeing the most important thing on the picture, while the blinds are defensive.

      Twain - 2012-01-24 15:29

"@Twain you are not making any sense." @CdeSganja Too many words? Sorry. I'll shorten it for you. You are missing the point of the ad and are using a straw man argument which is making you look ridiculous.

      Moi - 2012-01-24 15:30

@madiahv - the guy is also (supposedly) you see him as a sexual object in that picture?

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 15:41

@madiahv - oh you poor slow minded individual....I find it fascinating what people choose to read into this, just goes to show the state of their own warped little minds....BTW using your child to mask your own insecurities and try deflect away your racist attitude is hardly intelligent.... it actually points to your short coming as a parent more than helping your argument.....

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 15:45

@ CdeSganja - wont or cant? you are an idiot, a stupid idiot... you cant argue with me becuase you are an idiot.... try argue with me please..... I need a laugh....

      Simon - 2012-01-24 17:35

@Madiahv They are pictured from the chest upwards and the logo coveres the girl. If you saw these two on Clifton beach and he was in a pair of board shorts and she in a bikini would you still say they appear naked. Your mind is making you say that, not the evidence in front of you.....Now, with that in mind, why would assume nudity other than for your own agenda????

      Merven - 2012-01-25 13:46

There is nothing wrong with this photo, as long as they don't DANCE!

  • schneider.juanita - 2012-01-24 14:18

I agree with Modo, what is the fuss, they could be married! Advertising is there for each of our own imaginations. But the problem in South Africa is that we only "imagine negative"! Bring on the positive and say WELL DONE that they support a relationship as shown on the poster.

      Gerhard - 2012-01-24 15:43

African racists are not coming to terms with this.LOL!

  • Sean - 2012-01-24 14:20

So to all those who find the picture shocking. If you see a mixed race couple embracing each other in the street, are you going to walk up to them and say "Your display of affection is shocking!"? Get over yourselves.

      Sean - 2012-01-24 14:56

Slightly off the subject but relevant. There was a similar campaign in the UK not so long ago, however the subjects in the photos were mixed race and of the same sex. Imagine the outcry if DA had to roll out something like that in SA.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-01-24 15:01

I agree. The poster reflects something ALREADY happening, legally and openly. It is not 'promoting' anything sexually/racially

      Brolloks - 2012-01-24 15:37

No Sean, if they are naked in the street I will walk up to them and say: Your display of affection is shocking

      Peter - 2012-01-24 15:37

Sean, that would annoy me - that promotes unnatural behaviour, nothing unnatural about opposite sexes showing affection, but the same - not normal, I'll tolerate it but don't shove it down my throat.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-24 15:40

@Brolloks, they not naked.. Only your mind that is that way.

      Sean - 2012-01-24 16:05

@Brolloks they could be on a beach in their swimware. @Peter my thoughts exactly.

      thozi - 2012-01-25 14:32

In 1971, 19 white people of Excelsior, a small dorpie in the Free State were charged with breaking apartheid's Immorality Act, which forbade sex between blacks and whites. 3 decades later, many whites (and the CDP) still see love across racial-lines as taboo. And the poster wasn't even about sex... Therefore: is it now not time to let go of racial predudices and accept the inevitable - Christians? Afterall, the inter-racial marriages are already happening in SA, solemnised in Christian churches.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-01-24 14:20

Oh my word, how on this green planet do they see that???

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 14:22

see it's like this, they see all the attention the poster is getting so no they want some attention aswell so they make stupid comments so people will notice them

      Ronald - 2012-01-24 15:21

Just like a sex addict can see something sexual in every ink blot flash card a shrink can show during a psych evaluation.

  • Daemon - 2012-01-24 14:21

mmm..she has to have westernised extensions if she wants to fit the mould for a white guy. What a racist statement.

      Godfrey - 2012-01-24 14:40

      Eric - 2012-01-24 14:51

      It's about colour, not culture.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-01-24 15:02

Garbage. She's just an ordinary black girl. Besides, there's nothing western about straight hair. Most people with straight hair are not western, and western people generally do not have pitch-black hair

      Daemon - 2012-01-24 15:02

Well how many whites guys do you think you will see with township or rural girls (not just looking for action). Whites will only date black girls who are there equals in a first world "white" environment..thats the point, if you want to be my equal act like me.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-24 15:41

      @Daemon, wow issues dude, issues.

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-01-25 20:00

I think you are just looking for things to complain about.

  • Oscar - 2012-01-24 14:21

Yummee - I wouldn't mind getting a hug from him.

      Gerhard - 2012-01-24 15:46

Any black woman interested can contact me. You see my pic. It is me and my thai girlfriend.

  • the_gob - 2012-01-24 14:22

Oh please, do they want us to go back to the dark ages where kissing in public was "immoral"? Come on, get with it, this is in no way promotes sexual promiscuity. It just goes to show how backward thinking some people in this day and age still are. Has the CDP taken a stroll on any beach? What do they think about bikinis and top less dudes? If this ad promotes "sexually promiscuity" then Camps Bay on a hot day must be hardcore pornography!!! Get out of here with that 1600s mentality.

  • Cracker - 2012-01-24 14:22

The Christian Democratic Party does perform a very important function by reminding all fair minded people how religion must be kept out of power.

      Godfrey - 2012-01-24 14:34

Yes, yes and yes. Religion continues to receive unwarranted preferential treatment under law. In the future, when government (hopefully) becomes 100% neutral in its relationship to religion, then secularists can begin to ignore it. Until then, however, religion continues to be an unacceptable intrusion upon our right to be free from government coercion in matters of conscience.

      PhilipV - 2012-01-24 14:44

There I agree, Politics and Religion don't mix. But now don't go and brand all of us as extremists, some of us have moved on. This is a brilliant depiction of how black, white, brow, yellow ... what ever your color is ... people should look at each other.

  • Moi - 2012-01-24 14:23

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I don't see it as a sexual image. It shows deep affection between two people. You don't actually see anything anyway, so what's the problem?

  • Toze.Pina - 2012-01-24 14:25

Get a life Mr. Botha! What exactly is "sexual immorality"? Please explain to the rest of us how so-called christians like you breed? Are your babies carried by storks to their future mothers after a mail order? Your hypocrisy doesn't cease to surprise me. I'm really not sure if I feel sorry or disgusted by your (and your supporters) narrowness of mind....

  • Peter - 2012-01-24 14:25

First time I've ever heard of this party. Indeed we do have allot of problems in this country, but then why Theunis does it take something as willy nilly as this, that you clearly don't understand, to provoke a public statement from your party.

      steph.barton1 - 2012-01-26 22:14

I think they only wanted to be more known by the public. So they released a public statement which is now everwhere in the news because they knew this was going to be discussed by everyone every where. So did their Job well, it's the first time you hear about them.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-24 14:26

This poster is bringing out where peoples minds lie and is showcasing the predudices that still so abundantly exist in our society. What about a lot of the billboards around S.A.? This is going to be used as a political tool for months to come.Seems like there are a lot of minds in the gutter as there realy is nothing sexual about it.

  • Thelma - 2012-01-24 14:27

Oh get over yourself already.....Small things amuse small minds!!!!!!

  • Sharmay - 2012-01-24 14:28

Everyone needs to wake up. This is 2012, not the 1900's! The DA is trying to say that they are aiming for racial harmony and seeing an inter-racial couple shouldn't be such a shock in the future they envision. Most of these people complaining can't see past colour yet they claim to want a bright future for our country! Get your minds out of the gutter and start thinking a little bit more liberally. Being a closet racist PRUDE is pathetic. There is no indication whatsoever that this has any sexual content and whats the issue with black and white?...would the Christian Party have felt better if this woman had been wearing a ring!?...Really pathetic...

  • Tanja - 2012-01-24 14:29

The DA wanted to be controversial. They certainly did a good job ruffling the feathers of conservative farts.

      Moi - 2012-01-24 14:38

Definitely have them all talking about it! :)

  • Gcwabe-KaMavovo - 2012-01-24 14:29

The funniest bit is when this oke mentions farm murders. How on earth did he manage to fit those in? Lol

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-01-24 15:05

Ironic that farm murders would probably decrease if everyone embraced the message aimed with the poster

  • Hermann - 2012-01-24 14:30

And here it comes the condemnation of black magic! The reactions are worth all the effort put into it as excellent humour. I hope the designer of the poster thought of possible divorce after unity as many marriages go. In the meantime lets have a good laugh at the nasties.

  • deonk - 2012-01-24 14:30

people complain about this... really? This is a genius poster and the reaction shows that South Africa still has a long way to go. Spot on by the DA. There are many more elicit billboards that need more attention than this.

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-01-24 14:32

Oh my god REALLY!!!!! This is now really been super pathetic. Everyone is making such a huge deal out of nothing. Seriously ppl how many adverts are shown of sexual stuff to promote a perfume and there is no big who ha about it, but just because a political party puts a pic of two ppl hugging and half naked which there is no private body parts showing is all of a sudden promoting sexual immorality is just pathetic. Just shows u what most of u have on ur minds Mr Theunis Botha and ur party or is it just because u feel left out that you had to throw ur 2 cent in as kyle says in his comment. Seriously ppl grow and stop being so silly over a pic.

  • Callie Steijn - 2012-01-24 14:32

Someone hand the christian democratic party a clean tampon.

      Sharmay - 2012-01-24 14:34

      Gerhard - 2012-01-24 15:48

      I liked that!

  • dinnyesilva - 2012-01-24 14:32

"In a country with high levels of Aids and an overdose of crime, especially the high incidence of farm murders this year, this poster sends the opposite message to the country than needed." Really? How does the poster send an opposite meaning other than embracing a non-racial future with equality and prejudice. I believe Mr. Botha may need a lesson on morality.

  • PhilipV - 2012-01-24 14:34

    Oh grow up!!

  • TenRas1 - 2012-01-24 14:38

I'm not a DA fan but i do appreciate the extent that DA ppl go to send a good msg across. Keep up the good work. You might get my vote in 2014

  • the_gob - 2012-01-24 14:40

Farm murders? WTF is he on?

      Sandra - 2012-01-24 15:10

  • shane.jacoby - 2012-01-24 14:41

If you look really closely, in the bottom corner is a little "play" button... And if you click on it, you see them get their freak on and do it... Oh wait... That's what the CDP's are imagining... Cause I sure don't see any of that happening right there...

  • Rob - 2012-01-24 14:41

To simplify: There are three possible reactions (types) to the picture. 1. Didn't even blink or look twice: Probably where we shjould all be aspiring to. At least a reasonable exposure to education should take us to a point where we have a gut feeling that it should be normality 2. Mixed feelings, trying to balance between the intelect (that says that it is ok) and the emotion that is in conflict. This group has hope, but need a little more worldy exposure 3. Immediate reaction, knowing straight away that is is wrong. These are the people who need clear definitions of which groups they belong to (and don't). Bigots mostly, certainly smoe potential for seperatists, nationalists and racists. Too many of these around for sure.

  • mengelbrecht1 - 2012-01-24 14:41

  • jaz82 - 2012-01-24 14:50

proven over and over : religion + politics = disaster

  • Buzz - 2012-01-24 14:51

Come now CDP, how is the image any more disturbing than the content of the bible? This is not a dig at christians, just a dig at those who have selective morals. Get your mind out of the gutter CDP, wasn't god's intent that we not be clothed in the first place? Pfff, effen people using religion to conceal their own insecurities. Grow up!

  • rodfor1435 - 2012-01-24 14:51

  • Hemlock - 2012-01-24 14:54

What a crock! Two people showing affection and embracing each other is not "sexual immorality". Let people love who they want. We may be different skin colours but we all have red blood and hearts that beat... Stop being so bloody narrow minded and live in the real world!

  • Klipkop - 2012-01-24 14:55

Only thing shocking about that pick is that I am not the dude in the pic. Seriously I do think the DA could have done a better job as this does have a bit of a Durex ad feel to me but it sure aint shocking.

  • andrewilsonb - 2012-01-24 14:55

They could have had a picture of a mixed family having a picnic or a couple or couples walking down a pathway holding hands, to much flesh showing and to provocative.

  • Colbert - 2012-01-24 14:56

"insult to the many young people, black and white, who uphold high moral values" lol Then the Christian Democratic Party members all probably wears chastity belts. Its funny how you cant even see any nudity other than the Guy Not having a shirt on. I think the Christian Democratic Party Is racist for finding the Poster distasteful to the extreme. But hey for your Christian Party members check out this male chastity Device. Perhaps they should sell it at all the local churches. Its German So they would probably find that distasteful 2 lol

  • Sandra - 2012-01-24 14:56

"promoting sexual promiscuity" oh for heavens sake!!!! grow up and get over yourselves..............

  • Ian - 2012-01-24 14:57

  • mahlelu - 2012-01-24 14:57

Is this poster only catering for married couples??? im no Christian but when i see this pic of half naked people, i see something sexual.Keeping in mind that its not only the youth that will be seeing this picture, elderly people and kids too. The party needs to cater for all. This pic is sick!

CdeSganja - "Can you embrace a person while you are not wearing? I think Gana is lost." Yup. It can be done. In fact, it's something I do on a regular basis and you know what? It doesn't lead to anything sexual.

First glance of this picture of half naked people, i see something sexual. Keeping in mind that its not only the youth that will be seeing this poster, what about the elderly and our kids??? This is an inappropiate picture!!!

Well, as dominee would say: "You need a cake of soap the wash out those filthy thoughts..." It's only two people embracing... What's sexual about that? I don't see nipples or penetration (yes I said that out loud)... Do you see it? No You seeing what YOU want to see and not the message conveyed...
