Durban - The DA will introduce a community safety bill in each of the nine provinces, its parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said in Durban on Thursday.

Mazibuko said each of the bills would be tailor-made to the needs of each province.

Last month, the Western Cape legislature passed the Western Cape community safety bill, which the DA claims allows the province to have greater oversight powers over the way the police operate in the province.

"Each province should have its own community safety bill which is tailored to their needs," Mazibuko said.

The country's Constitution allowed provinces to write laws to give them "oversight over national bodies".

She said the high levels of sexual violence in KwaZulu-Natal meant the province needed such a bill.

It would ensure police tackled these crimes effectively and allocated resources where they were needed.

DA members in each province would introduce private members' bills.

She said Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa "had a very negative reaction" to the bill passed in the Western Cape legislature.

Mazibuko said the bills would survive any Constitutional challenge.
