Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance accepted an invitation on Friday from KwaZulu-Natal premier Lionel Mtshali to take part in the province's government and cabinet, the party said in a statement.

DA leader Tony Leon said the decision to enter the KZN government had been endorsed by the party's federal executive, and the KZN provincial management committee.

"Our entry into the KZN cabinet is a giant step forward in the developing relationship between our parties (the IFP and DA). We look forward to still closer co-operation in future," he said.

Mtshali announced earlier on Friday that the African National Congress' representation in the provincial cabinet would be cut from four to two seats, while the DA would take up the two vacated by the ANC.

These are the housing and economic development and tourism portfolios.
