Disband ANCYL, say Mpumalanga delegates

2012-11-29 19:01

Middelburg - African National Congress delegates in Mpumalanga on Thursday called for the disbandment of the ANC Youth League's national leadership.

"The current leadership of the ANCYL has undermined the ANC and continues to hold parallel programs that are anti-ANC," a delegate said to loud cheers from the packed hall.

A total of 469 delegates from across the province, a stronghold of President Jacob Zuma, are expected to nominate their preferred leaders for the ANC's elective conference in Mangaung next month.

Delegates requested that the proposal to disband the ANCYL be put on the agenda and be debated.

"We mandate the ANC to disband the youth league before it is too late," the delegate said.

Acting ANCYL president Ronald Lamola arrived at the conference just as delegates broke for lunch.

He laughed and shook hands with party provincial chairperson David Mabuza and the rest of the leadership.

Lamola is reported to have fallen out with expelled leader Julius Malema over who should be nominated deputy to Kgalema Motlanthe at Mangaung.

Also present at the conference were members of the party's national executive committee, Deputy Minister of Defence Thabang Makwetla, Communications Minister Dina Pule, and Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini.

      mary.kircher - 2012-11-29 19:40

I do believe it would be for the best - most of these guys are no 'youths' anymore. Far better to form a new league with age restrictions in my opinion.

  • henk63 - 2012-11-29 19:14

Anyway, YOUTH means YOUTH, not grown-ups meddling in politics and state tenders from the sideline. The ANCYL should concern themselves with matters that would uplift and empower young people to learn and eventually take their rightful place in society. The current profile of the ANCYL stinks to high heaven and I would like to see them disbanded totally, not just regroup under different but also corrupt leadership.

  • sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-11-29 19:15

The YL wants to play with the grownups. Maybe they should focus on their primary mandate - the needs of the youth in South Africa. I honestly have never not once heard of anything the YL has done in that regard, and there is so much to be done! Them and the NYDA are equally useless.

  • nico.maponya - 2012-11-29 19:16

  • tiaan.vanderberg.75 - 2012-11-29 20:47

No need to disband them. Discipline them as they are a imbarresment to the ANC. They differ so much with Mothership ANC that they can contest the election as a political party on their own!

  • Kagiso Spat Truthtell - 2012-11-29 20:50

Malema is ruling the ANCYL from the grave, the guys in the ANCYL

  • sipho.dube.92 - 2012-11-29 20:50

The youth league is an important organ of the ANC and future leaders will come from the youth league. However , I do feel the current leadership of the youth league is not up to scratch and doesn't serve the mandate of the mother body. The youth league need to debate issue and put pressure where its afforded without acting in isolation and against the mother body. The youth league cannot serve its own purpose but to assist the mother body and learn from its leadership , however a youth league for any party that works against the party is not recommended.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-11-29 21:39

And in this ever paternalistic model the parent-body has done diddly squat to do anything for their very own youth in practical, tangible terms. Let alone guide them regarding values and principles and on basic things such as how to behave. ANCYL are not exonerated - they talk a good talk, demand all the time but never do we see any ANCYL initiatives - like maybe helping textbook-less high-school children, helping people grow food gardens, giving Gogo with 6 grandchildren to care for a helping hand. Maybe they do these things but we never hear of it. All we see is demand, protest, bling bling and chair-throwing. What role model is that for the youth and how does that resonate with the ideals of the ANC?

      Malose-Nyatlo - 2012-11-29 22:17

@Lacrimosewolf Before helping anyone else, the youth league must help themselves by getting an education - a degree in commerce, engineering or law. It's only when that happens that we shall have rational future leaders - not zombies that will go into parliament drunk and strip naked when they disagreed with their opponents.

  • hdludlu - 2012-11-30 08:30

Nothing is good about the ANC leadership. You vote Montlante he brings in Juju. You vote Zuma the corruption surges further. It seems the ANC is rotten to the core.

  • dewaldmontgomery - 2012-11-30 09:28

Don't just disband it's leadership. Disband it completely. And while we're at it, disband the ANC also. We need a 21st century GOVERNING party. Not a early 20th century "movement" trying to RULE.

  • mdy.chauke - 2012-11-30 12:50

Mpumalanga is sick from greedy of individuals who want to continue their supremacy&monopolising Resources ,i know from facts that a lot of Mpumalanga population is not happy with the current leadership as there is no accountability so people just vanguely support the Current President of the ANC to manipulate resources as they have been doin without anyone being called to account, what a shame, why Mpumalanga with so many people who believes in high moral can go on &support somebody like Mr Zuma, with all the immoral sentiments that i have never thought to hear off/see from 60 something old grandfather like him except that there are few individuals who want's to perceive their views as Mpumalanga views, the mere fact is that the current President does have popularity with Mpumalanga people,i know that!

  • mbambo.shi - 2012-12-01 07:35

And inaguarate Edward Zuma as ANCYL's new president, Gugu his deputy, Dudu the general secretary and Kulubuse the minister to head the department of food and beverages.
