E Cape health probes corruption

2012-11-07 22:09

Johannesburg - Eastern Cape health officials are probing allegations of fraud and corruption in their department, says spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

He said the investigation had so far resulted in a number of officials resigning or being fired after internal disciplinary proceedings.

"We also uncovered scams where officials were allegedly awarding tenders to themselves and their friends," Kupelo said.

"Their modus operandi was to produce quotations from their offices and produce fraudulent tax certificates in order to comply with government procurement policy."

Service providers overcharging the department were also exposed.

"Action against these scams saved the department millions of rands."

He said the department had spent R3bn on building clinics and hospitals over the past three years.

"Specialist doctors were also employed permanently to serve in the three big hospitals of the province, Mthatha, Port Elizabeth and East London."

A total of 22 more doctors were recruited to serve in various hospitals in the rural areas.

Kupelo said the province had been allocated R119m from the national health department to recruit specialists who would be sent to various parts of the province.

SA is run by wild dogs, each trying to take a piece of the meat that is still left. What will happen if the meat is gone?

So anc, your way to sort out corruption is to let people resign, or maybe fire them?????? Perhaps you should consider setting an example instead of allowing a weak precedent (or should that read president?). How about some punishment and retribution in the form of prison terms and confiscation of assets/wealth....or at least some useful penal community service?

Oh so these health officials who are most probably corrupt themselves are going to look into the matter. What a joke just another act in the circus of crime. Every dept and every province under the ANC is corrupt who can they send in to check all this out.....nobody because they are ALL part of the corrupt circus. Government needs to take on workers from large Corporations to teach them how to run, Buyers get employed for a reason, they have to source out each article at the very best price, terms and conditions. Accountants etc employed for a very good reason. In government nobody is held accountable so the rot gets worse and worse and the corrupt chain gets longer and longer. End result......well rewarded with an increase for a job well done. This while people in the street are neglected. ANC = A National Corrupt Government.
