Family backs Winnie’s criticism of ANC

2012-07-12 09:17

Johannesburg - Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had the full support of her family regarding her criticism of the ANC, The Times newspaper reported on Thursday.

Madikizela-Mandela's granddaughter Swati Dlamini, also the daughter of Princess Zezani Mandela-Dlamini, said she understood why her grandmother was angry with the ruling party.

"I think there are some very valid points that she made," Dlamini was quoted as saying.

Madikizela-Mandela criticised the African National Congress in a letter reportedly addressed to party spokesperson Jackson Mthembu, stating the Mandela family only mattered when they were needed for "some agenda".

Limpopo lecture

She said the ANC had abused the Mandela name.

The ANC MP and ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela reportedly wrote the letter in response to a request by Mthembu for a meeting on July 5 to discuss the ANC's centenary celebrations.

The meeting was also meant to address her travel to Limpopo where President Jacob Zuma gave a lecture honouring Nelson Mandela on Tuesday.

Madikizela-Mandela did not attend the event.

Ndileka Mandela, a granddaughter from Mandela's first marriage, instead delivered a message from her grandfather. However it was delivered without the blessing of Madikizela-Mandela, and her daughters Zenani and Zindzi, The Times reported.

Mandela's wife Graca Machel also attended Tuesday's event.

In the letter, Madikizela-Mandela said the family was deeply hurt as they were not allocated a table at the ANC's centenary celebrations in Mangaung in January until Bridgette Radebe, wife of Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, intervened.

Madikizela-Mandela complained she had been sidelined during preparations for the celebrations and that she was reduced to being a spectator in 2011.

Mthembu would not comment on the matter.

The same goes for Christianity and poor people. Only pay attention to them when they want votes, like the "vote ANC and go to heaven claims" and the constant promises made to poor people. Alterior motives everywhere.

      marius.olivier.9 - 2012-07-12 10:23

Tony - what does Christianity and votes have to do with each other? the true doctrine of what Jesus did on earth is that He wants us to love our neighbors like we love ourselves (Mark 12:30) and look after the widows and orphans (read: care for the poor, homeless, lost and destitute; James 1: 26). Jesus never looked for votes or popularity. If only we can all follow what He did and not just look at the shortcomings and mistakes of churches / man....a little less "judgementalism" will go along way for all of us.

Winnie is upset because she's become irrelevant. Oh wait - she's been irrelevant for a long time. Its just taken her this long to figure it out.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-07-12 10:18

Absolutely! Who cares what she thinks. It would be best for everyone if she faded into obscurity.

  • mofstok - 2012-07-12 09:38

Wait a second. She was never born a Mandela. She was married to one, and when he noticed she was a psychotic biatch, he promptly drop-kicked her into touch for a more sane choice in life-partner. So how does she rationalise it to speak on behalf of the Mandela family?

      renny.meere - 2012-07-12 10:49

She reminds me of some sexually transmitted disease & she looks like a witch, cant stand her.

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-07-12 10:00

Winnie, if you crying that you being sidelined by the ANC yet you getting food every day to feed your family and you drive expensive cars if i am am to add up the amount of votes the Mandela family can cast for the ANC, i dont think it will make them win even a single council seat. Yes the Mandela contributed( point of correction Nelson Mandela) to the freedom of this country but what about the millions who are living in shacks without water or electricity not even food to feed their children. People, we vote for you to live that kind of life so dont take us for granted because we can still vote for the next party that can diliver us from the ANC. Stop crying for being sidelined by the ANC yet the very ANC is sidelining millions of South Africans. If you feel that much neglected, for your own Party with Julius and then you will get the much needed attention you so much need. The Sisulu's, Tambo's Luthuli's, Hani's , what is the ANC doing for them or and me of cause the voter.

      Harald - 2012-07-12 12:36

Thabo, you are dead right man... they cry for attention, but ignore the millions they fail through corruption, theft, nepitism, cadre deployment etc etc SA would have been fine if we stuck to doing the basics right, didn't get too fancy, and didnt redeploy everyone who is corrupt...

  • 19SideWaysView - 2012-07-12 10:02

Huge cracks afe beginning to show and fester like sores. This is a direct result of weak leadership. This message has been conveyed time and time again and Zuma choses to ignore it. The only time the message penetrates occurs when cartoonists and artists make a statement

last time i checked this was the same woman who cheated on tata with a younger man. She must just stop being a Diva and get on with life, we all know she is a staunch Malema supporter. She too must not use the Mandela name to settle political scores.

  • hamish.drake1 - 2012-07-12 10:26

I wasn't going to comment on this or the previous article with her statement, but after seeing some of the retarded comments, I thought I may as well. Before you comment, maybe you should actually read what she said. It comes down to this: if the ANC isn't taking care of their top party members, how can they take care of grass roots members or citizens with no affiliation to the ANC. The party is disrepecting the Mandela clan and if they can do that, they can have no respect for any of us. The ANC has become a "look after yourself" party and get as much as you can, before you get caught.

      Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-07-12 10:40

      Finally! Someone rational.

      Richard - 2012-07-12 11:44

Agreed, Hamish, very rational and logical comment ... Generally a good idea to read the article, rather than just the headline, and then use it as a basis for broken record ANC, govt bashing, without commenting on the issues in the article..

Winnie wanted to be herself to adress the lacture in Venda. Graca attended the lacture being sent by Nelson Mandela. Winnie Lost it by being unfaithfull to Mandela,. She does not habve Mandela blood in her veins. she is Winnie madikizela married to mandela family. Mandela's doughter from the first wife adresssed the lacture at Venda.

  • Thobile Lugwadu - 2012-07-12 10:50

Winnie is right,i fully agree with her. If you have never held a meeting with ANC croonies, you better shut up. Yesterday i held a meeting with the so-called technical staff from one most corrupt district municipalities in the eastern cape. The cadres would stiffle discening views, and the project steering commite members, who are always illiterate and ignorant widows, wont open their mouths. Here i am talking about multimilion rand sanitation projects. Cry the beloved country.

      maliba.mahlalela - 2012-07-12 13:44

Many graduates are struggling, plenty enrolled for water and sanitation, which in most cases are taken for granted,if employed they at a very low level, tough on other hand country suffer service delivery, talking from experience. Such project can be at least well implemented if such graduates are involved but believe you me,oppressed by mostly illiterate individual within water services providers

      somikazi.pita - 2012-07-12 15:10

Look at the posts government departments advertise, 'Professionals' are always on lowest levels! Why is that?!! No wonder professionals don't bother to apply.

  • king.koffi.9 - 2012-07-12 10:56

well,Winnie is a citizen of this country, she, like all of us has a right to complain about anything she s uncomfortable with about the ANC or whatever societal matter, its only when we afford each other space to breath and contructively critisize each other that we can become a mature nation.

      paul.makhudu1 - 2012-07-12 12:45

  • paul.makhudu1 - 2012-07-12 11:32

people respect your former husband nelson not you! this democracy we have is due to the believe a non-racial society from tata! if you want a first class treatment go to your boyfriends dali mpofu and julius malema! what is it that warrants you to have a special treatment? you are one of those who brought chaos to the ANC and when the ANC needs mandela they don't have to ask for permission from you! helen zille sometimes uses mandela's philosophy because he is a wise man!! does she have to have your blessings? get a man nelson has a wife!

She's really just pissed off beacause she did not get star treatment and she is even more angry at the fact that the anc kicked malema out as she want's her agenda run (through the youth league) and not the anc's agenda. Personally I don't know what is worst, hers or the anc's? Stompie and all the unknown's versus service deliveryand stealing and all the unknowns.
