Fund only one Zuma wife - Eastern Cape ANC

2012-06-20 12:44

Johannesburg - The Eastern Cape ANC wants taxpayers to fund only the first wife of President Jacob Zuma, according to reports on Wednesday.

The Times, quoting its sister newspaper the Daily Dispatch, said the provincial African National Congress wanted this to be discussed at the party's policy conference.

The provincial ANC's economic transformation commission said it supported a proposal that only wife number one, Sizakele Khumalo, gets taxpayer support and not the other three wives.

"Only wife number one should get benefits from the state. Our understanding is that when [you] a man decides to have more than one wife, you are able to support the others. Then deal with it," an unnamed delegate was quoted as saying.

This notion was apparently first raised by a member of the ANC's Veterans League.

The proposal will be tabled at the ANC's policy conference in Midrand next week if it is supported at the Eastern Cape executive council meeting on Friday.

Zuma is also married to Bongiwe Ngema, Nompumelelo Ntuli and Thobeka Mabhija.

They should have done this a long time ago.

      tallentonline - 2012-06-20 21:26

I agree Steen, if Zuma doesn't stand for a second time.. it's as good as pointless!! No disrespecting our Culture but it also stipulates that a Man can marry as many wives as 'HE CAN AFFORD" my biggest worry is that "why wouldnt Zuma marry all these wives before" i mean they have been together for quite sometime since he already had kids with them..?? Because he knowz that the State can only pay for his "official wives" Shame on U..

  • snoopy.snoopaloop - 2012-06-20 13:10

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-06-20 13:15

Good suggestion, this has been long overdue. Credit should be given when it is due. Thumbs up to E. Cape ANC Branch.

      Irene - 2012-06-20 13:26

tshivhombelaf ~ Hopefully it'll slow the old goat down and he'll think twice before marrying someone else if he has to pay for them out of his own pocket. Easy to do when someone else is fitting the bill.

As a policy guide line for all Future South Africans aspiring to become president of the land , There is no problem but Do not look at it as a compain Issue about the Incumbent because this issue has more to do with our Traditions and cultures than The State, So Yes go ahead to and include it as Policy guide line in renumerating a sitting Head of state. But i warn you not to look at it as A Zuma/Zulu Problem unless you want Civil War and have Balkanised Joburg with no Go areas!!! Do not dvide the Nation with Cultural centiments!!!

The greatest idea from Youth League! We should have done this long ago,but there's still time. I can even take a week off from work to go n march for that instead of the Spear

  • jwarha.balakisa - 2012-06-20 14:53

In African culture a man must look after his wife or wives and no one else. If you want 30 wives fine by me but you must take care of them. Don't expect other people to look after you wives.

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-06-20 14:54

If the constitution allows many wives then it must make provision for their upkeep. Let’s not have double standards and select parts of the constitution that fits us. If we are saying the constitution is flawed then it has to be reviewed and amended. Just as gay marriages polygamy is recognised in our constitution so polygamist need to be protected as well. If it were about gays people could have readily rise to accuse ANC Eastern Cape of hate crime. If you don’t want the wives to benefit why did you vote him into power, it’s your choice so live with it but for now it’s only fair that the wives chow taxpayer’s money.

  • Arthur - 2012-06-20 15:30

I say Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes! Let the Spear foot the bill himself. Why should the taxpayer pay for them to live in luxury whilst millions are starving?

  • Lincoln - 2012-06-20 21:01
