Gate-crashers brand Mazibuko a 'coconut'

2012-11-09 22:31

Johannesburg - DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko was jeered and labelled a "coconut" as unionists and teachers gate-crashed a protest march by the party on Friday demanding better education in the Eastern Cape.

The dramatic scenes unfolded outside the offices of the provincial education department in Zwelitsha near Bhisho, where the Democratic Alliance's "peaceful" march soon erupted into chaos, the Weekend Post reported.

Sadtu and Nehawu supporters wielded sticks and heckled Mazibuko and a group of 500 of her supporters.

About 200 protesters loudly taunted Mazibuko while she addressed her followers, singing "amabulu amnyama" (rich blacks or coconuts).

"It is like calling black members coconuts, only more derogatory," said DA Eastern Cape provincial leader Athol Trollip.

The protesters refused to give reasons for their protest and began chanting "no interviews".

However, one woman, wearing a red Nehawu T-shirt, shouted: "Ask those who come to invade us!"

The tense stand-off came a day after Western Cape premier and DA leader Helen Zille was pelted with stones by striking farm workers and had to be whisked away by police in De Doorns in the Western Cape.

Following the education department's decision to axe almost 4 000 temporary teachers in the province at the end of this year, the DA's mission was to deliver a memorandum to acting Superintendent General Mthunywa Ngonzo, demanding quality teachers in every Eastern Cape classroom.

However, he refused to make an appearance, sending two departmental officials in his place.

"I am worried about a culture in which protesters carry sticks because we wanted to ensure this march was peaceful," Mazibuko told Weekend Post.

"We are not here to engage with Cosatu but with the Department of Education. They can shout all they like. They are here to cause a fiasco and provoke us when they should be in class. They are making a mockery of education. They are very immature, yet they are supposed to be educated," she said.

DA member Edmund van Vuuren laid a complaint of intimidation against Sadtu and Nehawu members - who work at the education department - at the Zwelitsha police station.

"Their strike was illegal because they didn't get permission and I laid the charges to prevent further intimidation against those who have permission to have a peaceful protest. We must nip this in the bud."

Referring to the protest as a "wildcat strike", Van Vuuren said the protesters were "raping the DA's democratic right" to freedom of speech.

"I can't understand it - we are fighting the same fight. We are all unhappy that teachers will lose their jobs, so I can't understand why they are standing there. Is it just because we are the DA?"

Schoolchildren from the nearby Xolani Senior Secondary school said they did not support the DA's call for better education practices in the province.

"We don't support them because we already have a good education and they were disturbing us while we were writing our maths literacy exam," said Sikelelwa Gobile, 17.

I think Lindiwe must feel honored to be called a coconut by these backward grant receivers. It just proves that she is a woman of substance that deserves our respect.

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-09 23:45

ANC morons just gave a massive compliment to white people. I cannot understand their backward mentality, when a black person does not speak like a barbarian, is educated, civil and disciplined then they are called coconuts... my goodness, no wonder we cant get along.

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-10 07:36

SS - You must be one of the uneducated and ruled by stupidity (ANC)! Your kind deserve nothing, because you do not appreciate anything! Someone is trying to help you and your kids and what do you do! You are brainwashed by your mafia (ANC). What did they promise you this time, a street wise 5 & tracksuit!

      brad.ken.18 - 2012-11-10 08:08

cANCer and its supporters are nothing but a bunch of barbarians! Cannot behave like civilised human beings.

Troll Alert @Ntshobs and @Monareng - ignore them.

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-10 08:49

You quick to call educated civilized black people coconuts. What do you call black people who vandalize, violently strike and brutally murder those who dont want to strike, who kill people for their body parts(muti)? Do you call them true black Africans?.... what an insult to traditional African people.

      om.nom.nom.01 - 2012-11-10 10:05

Sometimes I wonder why do I care, what is the point. I read "ssmonareng's" comment: "Why set yourself up for rejection every time!" & you know what? He is correct, why should I care about the level of education his children receives? He clearly couldn't give a rats backside how this country gets plundered as long as he can get his share. Zille is trying to stop corruption & "Ntshobs" truly believes she is trying to revive the NP *face palm*. Maybe I should rather take their attitude & approached every situation with a "WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME" attitude. Maybe I should just resign myself to the fact that they deserve everything they voted for, hell maybe I'll help them by voting for the cANCer come the next elections. All I do know is my child will never ever go to a government school, just like every single child of Jacob Zoom Zooooooomer, & his ministers.

... Welcome to the world's greatest IDIOCRACY..! A 17 year old South African says: "..."We don't support them because we already have a good education..." while writing a maths. While the reality is: But this is then the foremost character of an idiocracy, It is invested with those who do not know that they do not know... PS: How far is SA from full scale civil war..? The ANC persists to employ Cosatu members as foot soldiers to physically confront the DA (most illegally so). The police take no material action (ref eg Nkandla). It is only a matter of time before a senior DA official is seriously hurt (or worse one fears). The DA will then be faced with prospect of a unilateral declaration of independence in order to employ the vast military resources in within its boundaries. The clinical reality is - such a confrontation will be over by lunchtime, as the ANC's military "might", is second only to its intellectual "might"...

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-10 10:58

@SS & Ntsho, i have friends of all races - never was and will never be a racist, God made us all equally! Where unions are involved you will see a political motive. Teachers should teach our children and not get involved in political action. Stick to what you know best. Ask someone if you don't know what you good at. Calling educated and rich black people coconuts is like insulting the fruits of your labour. Is this not what you are trying to achieve by education? You should be proud of any black person that has a tertiary qualification and has managed to reach senior positions. Why are you now jealous of these people, or are you just jealous of any one that has proven to be better than you.

      francois.olivier.108 - 2012-11-10 00:57

Take heart Lindiwe, a coconut is a nourishing fruit. When green it is full of milk, just like a new mother, and coconut milk is one of the most nutritious foods available on this planet. As it ages the milk turns into a nourishing meal. There's a possibility that you may be the nourishment that our poor starved country needs to feed on if it has any hope of survival.

      jon.jones.90663894 - 2012-11-12 01:32

Indeed Penny Coconuts are one the most useful and benficial plants on earth. They have nutritional uses and can be used as fuel. On the island of Bouganville cocnut oil is used in place of diesel oil. It is used as building material in some parts ofthe world. It is used as a base constituent in many medicinal products. BUT BUT BUT over and above all very recently it has been found to have great potential in the fight against cancer. I kid you not -- look it up. So cocnuts are effective as both bodily cancer and political cANCer fighters. Lindiwe coconuts are beautiful. Be proud. Very proud.

I do not understand the comment made by that learner shame it goes to show that really she/he had to have been writting Maths lit instead of Maths. At this moment we are sitting with a bulletin that was advertised by the department to employ educators and many vacancies that are advertised to not even exist. I think everyone who is a stake holder in education really needs to step in because education in this province is going down the drain fast.

That's what this is ultimately about. If the sadtu and nehawu members had any sense they would see that in this case they are fighthng the same battle. But no they call one of their own colour derogatory namer - so that's what it is about, not education.

Bhingi, you seem to believe that every white person who's ever lived in the country became a member of the NP and personally voted, in parliament, in favour of Bantu Education and Apartheid. The general inequalities in SA are a result of past and present government actions, not the cause of it. Many whites have sisters, aunts, cousins, mothers, grandmothers, etc., who belonged to the Black Sash who, as one their many functions, gave life orientation and adult education to many black families. Having said that it is the responsibility of the historically privileged, and the few newly privileged, to help educate the historically disadvantaged.

      Erna - 2012-11-10 08:50

Bhingi - and it's people like you that will prevent the situation from ever improving for the majority in this country because you keep on voting for the anc. Hear your president is travelling all over the country making promises again. I won't even defend the other part of your comment because you don't know me or my family or what we did during the apartheid years and nothing I say will change your mind. And that all because I am white!

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-11-10 09:13

Yep ...pld bingi........just think about it, you or your parents voted for the ANC but was it you that spent 250million rand on Zuma's house, did you have anything to do with the Limpopo text books going missing, or the Marikana Massacre? Then ask your self what are you really in control of? It was the same under the Nationalist, the country was run by self serving hoodlums, just like it is now with the Zuma cabinet.....the Anc has been taken over by hoodlums who do not give a dam about you, me or anybody else but themselves...... Now ask yourself what can you do about it....... hate the white man?......really? this all you can do? ... Do you hate the white man because the ANC says you must? Yes? Well that is exactly what they want you to do.....because this is how the elitist ANC hoodlum few distract you, your cousin, your mother, father, brother and sister from the real 'farking' issues, allowing them to steal you and me and the rest of Jpe Public freaking blind.. Reminds me a lot of how the Nats use to control the whites back in the old days.. it is best that we all freaking wizen up, about how we all want a government to run and how we would all like to live in this country..... It is way past the time when the 40million odd black people in this country keep looking at what the white person has and does, and expect one million working white people to employ the entire nation, they can't and they do not want to, you and you should be doing this.

  • PointBlank - 2012-11-10 06:32

Once you have a certain mind set of people who wont choose to be deaf, dumb and blind then there is absolutely nothing any one can do. Here we see people in Unions and even Teachers who are supposed to be educated what does that tell you about them. Here we have these teachers educating our children and this is the way they behave, like hooligans with no respect for other people, especially in the Eastern Cape where in this province everything has reached rock bottom. They do not want help, they are happy just to let things deteriorate you cant change their mindset, these people are deaf dumb and blind and supposedly have some form of education. Its disgusting, that the ANC and its supporters always go and carry on like a bunch of hooligans and turn to violence if necessary. Do we see the DA doing the same things to the ANC. The ANC and its supporters have no integrity, they no respect for themselves never mind for other parties so that goes to show you that they are a bunch of useless, brainless hooligans. Take any political event even one of their own events, it turns into a beer hall brawl. This party is taking its citizens backwards. I think it is disgusting to see supposedly educated people carrying on in this manner. I am not a supporter of the DA but at least they are civilized and taking people forward, they are not a bunch of uncivilized disrespectful hooligans who have done nothing to uplift their province.

  • peter.strydom.37 - 2012-11-10 07:05

Now I'm stunned, they the DA are there to address the short-comings in the education department but yet are told by a 17 year old that all is well and that they are being disturbed, what's the facts here?

      jerome.appollis.1 - 2012-11-10 07:52

They dnt understand reason nor sense

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-11-10 08:02

The 17 year old is in Grade 2?

      pws69 - 2012-11-10 12:36

Stupid is as stupid does - Forrest Gump. Need I say more?

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-11-10 07:36

During the apartheid era white people who fought for the freedom of black people were labeled by racist as a k .... boetie , today we have a similar scenario where if black people dont agree with the anc govt they are labeled coconuts or other derogatory terms , i hear it on the radio aimed at talk show hosts etc these racists are as narrow minded and racist as the apartheid racists .

      Erna - 2012-11-10 08:54

I know the term well. My father was called one.

      pws69 - 2012-11-10 12:41

not enough space to list the times I was called a k boetie in the army. I turned it to my favour, where as a Lance Corporal told a Lieutenant "f#$k you, lieut" and he couldn't do a thing about it. You could have heard a pin drop. LOL. Funny (as in weird funny) times those. One thing the ANC and NP have in common is the ability of mass indoctrination. Street names, airport names, building names after party "heroes". Colour co-ordinating government department branding to closely resemble your own. But the NP at least provided a better level of education. That, perhaps, is why they ANC want such shoddy education, they saw how even a moderate education in the black population helped bring down the NP and Apartheid. They don't want this bit of history repeating itself.

  • manny.ferrezuelo - 2012-11-10 07:39

Sikelelwa Gobile (17), you who already have a 'good education' - the pencil you used to write your math lit exam is more valuable than the subject you wrote.

  • normboolalor.scizaar - 2012-11-10 07:46

M no DA supporter.n politics r sickening me honestly BUT this Lindiwe Mazibuko is 1 lady I admire. She has a backbone, unlike some of us, black ladies. She is completely against corruption n she's fighting it. Keep it up gal!!!! They can call u ALL sorts of names like coconut, litchi, potato! TRUTH hurts!!!

      mfanafuthi.mhlungu - 2012-11-10 14:18

bt zille is corrupting right under her nose

  • Dikmol - 2012-11-10 07:58

The situation in our country Hadley gotten out of hand since Zuma took Oberlin snf that I'd s FACT. I have completely lost my confidence in this organisation. Writing Havre gonads backwards.

Idiots the lot of them. This is being done for their own sake, but i guess idiots can't think ten steps ahead. The worst province on education level fights against a call for quality education, how f-ing priceless. I guess it was to be expected. Garbage in Garbage out, I'm appalled by their dumbness.

  • nadia.graf.50 - 2012-11-10 08:11

Sikelelwa Gobile if your education system was so great you would be writing Maths and not Maths literacy .... because of poor guidance, I know someone who has to do Maths (after doing Maths literacy) to study in his chosen field. Most apprenticeships also require Maths and not Maths Literacy.

  • Suzanne Viljoen - 2012-11-10 08:18

HOW TERRIBLE to be called a coconut!!! hahahahahahaha GO LINDIWE!!

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-10 09:00

The RISE of all 'coconuts' in SA will be better than hanging onto more stupid JZ's and other hustlers. "Clever Blacks" need to start standing together even politically as they can surely see what zuma has in mind for them by now, along with his allicances from hell.

  • makarapakaplan - 2012-11-10 09:12

I think she should be proud to be a called a coconut, ppl resort to hurling derogatory insults when jealous of somebody else's achievements

  • Brian Wilkinson - 2012-11-10 09:35

The increasing intolerance of political opposition is becoming very scary - time for the DA to ask the international community for assistance in guaranteeing freedom of expression?

  • niki.wessels - 2012-11-10 09:36

Coconuts? The others are just plain nuts if they still support Zuma and his cronies, who don't give a fig for them as they use public money as their personal piggybank. Why do these people think the prices of food, transport and basic commodities keep rising so fast? Can't they make the connection? Oh, yes, they have Eastern Cape education...

  • dragonfire47 - 2012-11-10 09:57

definition of a coconut, a black person with white intelligence, someone who can communicate and speak properly

  • jacyjays.letsoalo - 2012-11-10 10:08

It is sickening to see COSATU and its affilliates always blocking the DA's marches, it shows a backward mentality which sterms from the illicit fear of the unknown! For God's sake COSATU don't have the God given power to represent the workers and needs of every black South African. Their violent approach is so sickening and while the DA is also fighting for their cause for quality education. Well u can call Lindiwe Mazibuko a Coconut but a lot of \ur kids\ are, attending the same schools the DA leaders kids attend to. Namecalling to suit one's agenda doesn't work, Lindiwe, instead of calling herself Silvia Mazibuko have stuck with her African name. The time is coming in South African Politics when votes are not going to be dicated by history especially when the young ppl we are breeding now lose touch with the sentiments of Mandelahood, Sisuluhood and all this emotional and sentimental history stuff! COSATU and ur affiliates stop ur Political Mediocrity by supporting Hooliganism amongst ur structures, what message are u giving to ur young coconuts attending Multiracial Schools! Maybe u don't know what poiting Fingers does...Saving Jobs is a collective effort not only u Damn COSA(D)Tu

  • flysouth - 2012-11-10 10:09

All organised by the ANC of course.

  • wayne.faulds - 2012-11-10 10:13

    Democracy, ANC style!

  • saintbruce.bruce - 2012-11-10 10:22

Schoolchildren from the nearby Xolani Senior Secondary school said they did not support the DA's call for better education practices in the province. "We don't support them because we already have a good education and they were disturbing us while we were writing our maths literacy exam," said Sikelelwa Gobile, 17. Pity about only writing maths literacy because I can't employ you! I need students who have studied proper full Mathematics to Matric level as well as Science. Those who chose an 'easier' path are probably not able to enter the higher level - better paying - job market. South Africa needs engineers and just does not produce enough. India has more students doing engineering degrees than there are students studying in American Universities currently! The country that build - not breaks down - higher education will forge ahead. Brazil, India, Russia and China are miles ahead of the slipping South African economy due to a real focus on higher education. Being a part of BRICS is a joke. We have nothing other than cheap minerals to offer. Why is our education system failing ? Simply due to a failure by Government to understand the basics of how an economy works! Do you agree?

When crab hunting you won't need a lid for the bucket as long as you catch more than one crab because crabs will always pull each other down always denying each other freedom. This country is a bloody joke and its turning into a dictatorship right before our eyes. You who support this will have to explain your reasoning to your kids one day when it blows up in your faces
