Gauteng still owes millions

2012-09-04 22:26

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government owed its local municipalities R476 million, spokesperson Matlakala Motloung said on Monday.

She said the province managed to pay off over a quarter of the total debt in the last three months.

"Gauteng provincial departments owed local authorities R476m at the end of June 2012, a fact that we are not quite content about," Motloung said in a statement.

"This was a reduction from the R619m owed by departments at the end of March 2012."

Three departments still owed municipalities substantial amounts.

The department of infrastructure development was in debt of about R182m, the education department owed about R107m, and the health department R100m.

"Government debt to municipalities often relates to assessment rates and services that have in certain instances accumulated over an extended period of time," said Motloung.

A debt management committee had been formed to help in the matter.

"Because we are cognisant of the importance of cash-flow to municipalities, we have been working hand-in-glove with local authorities to ensure that we meet our obligations faster."

More money is spent on changing street names, than maintaining the actual road... Sure the people after which the roads are named will feel proud about the image which is created of them...

This country is headed for disaster!

After 18 years, the ANC have absolutely, conclusively proved that they do not know how to run a country. Everything is worse off now than in 1994. Public health? Check. Municipalities? Check. Roads? Check. Railways? Check. Education? Double check. Yet ANC ministers think nothing of swanning around in the biggest waBenzis they can get, flying first class to unnecessary conferences with their family members, and handing out billion rand tenders to people who don't ever do the job properly. And it's not going to change; the ANC has a bunch of crooks at the very top. The ONLY hope for SA - and especially the poor - is to put a government (of all races) of competent, efficient, knowledgeable people into power. Under the ANC, there is NO hope. They have totally proven that they suck at governance.

This is scary, not a day goes by without another report of mismanagement, lack of planning, misuse of funds or corruption. This government, the ANC cadres, is really hopeless. What is it with this wanton destruction of any asset of value in the country:roads, bridges, traffic lights, fixed line infrastructure, hospitals, public buildings etc etc???

during apartheid it was uncommon for blacks to pay any form of municipal bills, now with their rise to power, they have continued the tradition. it was assumed that whites had the best of everything without paying for it which isn't true, in fact, whites were paying double rates, electric, school fees and rental accommodation while blacks got everything mahala except pay for food and clothing. when you not use to having to pay for anything, it is difficult to budget which is what blacks were accustomed to during apartheid. get with the program if you want equal rights and equal opportunities! nothing in life is free, it all comes with a price tag, so start paying to survive! just my two cents worth of input if anyone cares to know...

      IcemanGP - 2012-09-05 07:05

Seems those that ticked the "Thumbs Down" button, are the ones that are used to getting things for Mahala, and still believe that "All whites are rich".

"A debt management committee had been formed to help in the matter." That's the answer of course appoint another committee and waste even more money.

The departments are working not hand in glove, but money in their pockets to pay off debts. Maybe a bit less (BMW's, MERC's ) etc...

They will have much more money if they get the money owed to them by their own officials and all the "informal settlements" that use power and other services but do not pay for it. Socialism doesn't pay!

  • arthur.salvado - 2012-09-05 07:56

The government MUST give back the money they have stolen. It must amount to trillions. Bunch of palookas must be held accountable. That's a demand that people must make soon before the country collapses completely .

Funny though that if I dont pay my taxes or my bills I get hit with penalties, interest, or even a court order wanting to garnish my salary, Even worse take my possesions, or jailed. Be nice to see the same principles applied to every one and organisation. I can not just not pay, nor are they interested in my sob story. Electricity hikes, petrol hikes, next it will be food and then everythign else. Most government officials get these things paid for, people that we as the public elected for, strange why they get placed on these pedistals, when all they really need to do is do there jobs like the rest of us.
