Hands off Zuma, Mpumalanga premier says

2012-11-29 16:02

Middelburg - The African National Congress in Mpumalanga has confidence in President Jacob Zuma and will continue to support him, its chairperson and Premier David Mabuza said on Thursday.

"The question of [ANC] leadership has been concluded from where we stand. Hands off our president," Mabuza told delegates at the provincial nomination conference in Middelburg.

A total of 469 delegates from across the province, which is a Zuma stronghold, are nominating their preferred leaders for the ANC's elective conference in Mangaung next month.

Mabuza urged delegates to "act accordingly" during the conference.

"In this current climate within the organisation, members should avoid any slightest confrontation and deliver a successful conference."

The Mangaung conference should "draw a line" and deal with the current erosion of the values of the ANC.

"We agree with Zuma when he says the party needs to change into second gear after Mangaung. That time has come."

Delegates chanted the names of their preferred leaders, including Zuma, national executive committee member Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary general Gwede Mantashe and ANC deputy chairperson Baleka Mbethe.

      NickvanGraan - 2012-11-29 16:40

David Mabuza would say that. Mamparalanga is one of the most corrupt and mismanaged provinces in the country. At least with Zuma still at the helm, this can continue without interference.

AGreed, old Uguh Uguh of mpumalanga doesn't seem to realize it yet but zuma's lying in Parliament strips him of his title and position automatically and the otehr cases which are resuming will take him out of Nkandla. Maybe even in time for Lady Gaga (equally as flamboyant & popular as zuma) to be the first celebrity tourist to use all those rooms as a luxury transit safari resort.

the scary part is that people will just carry on voting for our moronic president or others with similar greedy selfish and self empowering views. The people of Our people don't understand what the gift of democracy and OUR democratic right actually means i.e. when people and governments don't stand by us and do the right things for the people, FIRE them. The ruling party will land up getting voted in again and again until there's nothing left to vote for. Africa at it's best..

@mongetane: exactly which party can one vote if u dont wanna vote anc. DA not my options cause then problems: Lekota is not in order: we really need a strong black movement party to take us forward. personally i don't think we should ask Europeans to run our country: otherwise you will experience a second phase of aparteit and that will invite world war

      tommy.jones.754918 - 2012-11-29 16:42

True, and I can accept that. What I can't accept is the fact that there exist no "public debate" between the "democratic" elected leader and his official opposition. Like they have in other democratic countries. There exist therefore no opportunity for the man on the street to shape their opinion about the person that leads them. Although, some of the population are so blinded by their support that I don't even think that will help.

      tommy.jones.754918 - 2012-11-29 16:52

Thabiso, explain the second phase of apartheid. Never heard of it.

So many comments I'll repeat my earlier one..... I wonder how things went like this - from a man who was in the war cabinet (the late Field Marshal Jan Smuts) who assisted in the Normandy landings in a crucial strategy in defeating Nazi Germany to this piece of rapist trash!

      tommy.jones.754918 - 2012-11-29 16:47

Yea, I don't think than many people know about the history of Jannie Smuts anymore. He may be better known outside the borders of SA (League of Nations).

      patrick.m.vianello - 2012-11-29 16:51

It's so sad because if there was ever a statesman, he was one. He joined the side of his former enemy (the British in the 2nd Boer war) for the greater good of the planet and put aside his personal resentment for them aside. Something Zuma couldn't even comprehend

      tumelo.radebe1 - 2012-11-29 17:00

Yes smuts was so amazing. Let's just forget the part where he supports segregation

      patrick.m.vianello - 2012-11-29 17:15

Ja Tumelo, let's forget the part where Zuma raped an innocent women and where his regime supports glass bottles been put up farmers wives genitalia. And I will give a quote from Smuts in his loss in the famous 1948 election "I attribute my defeat to the poisonous fumes of Apartheid". Brother - unless you have something sensible to reply to me, rather don't

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2012-11-29 17:24

@tumelo Jan Smuts was just trying to stop the ANC from gaining power and running the country into the ground. Now the ANC has had 19 years to prove Smuts wrong, but I'm afraid the ANC has failed dismally

      patrick.m.vianello - 2012-11-29 17:27

I couldn't have said it better kortbroek!

      mlimiliba.siqendu - 2012-11-29 17:48

I believe that you didn't get it that the honourable Mr Smuts gave spears to the black conscripts who were sent to fight with Hitler because blacks couldn't be trusted with arms. We hear that upon return they were demobilised with a compensation of the brass medals, their combat uniform and bicycles. On the other hand farms were dished out to white fellow combatants. Ask somebody about that history. There is no fairness in this world.

      patrick.m.vianello - 2012-11-29 18:32

mlimiliba - you do realize that had Adolf won that war - there would be virtually no person left in South Africa, he would have killed all the people of colour as he killed the Jews plus like 80% of the white population as Hitler didn't agree with religion and whites in the country (at least then) were deeply religious. You honestly think Adolf would have just stayed in Europe after winning the war. lol - Adolf would say "I can smell a diamond and a gold coin down there in Southern Africa - let's go and f*ck them!" Be grateful for those allies bro. Peeps here would all be German today

      mlimiliba.siqendu - 2012-11-29 19:19

I repeat there was nothing in it for blacks. Whites learnt a thing or two on how to oppress people from the Germans. I don't mean they were angels before the war but they got worse after the war. It was really a white war fought in foreign lands by people who did not even know why they were put to the war cause. General experimented with them to see how the German super guns were doing to the people. They fought, some captured and maimed for what only Jan Smuts knew. The recruitment drive was that you are not going to the war front to fight but to be workers. They were rudely surprised when they got there and saw what was taking place. Maybe in the long run those families won't be forgotten and get some form of compensation for their effort there.
