Daughter's tribute to Chris Hani

2013-04-10 12:10

Chris Hani's youngest daughter Lindiwe has paid tribute to her father at a wreath laying ceremony, saying he was the whole country's hero. Watch. WATCH

Johannesburg - Former SA Communist Party general secretary Chris Hani's youngest daughter Lindiwe paid tribute to her father at a wreath laying ceremony east of Johannesburg on Wednesday.

"Chris Hani was always my hero, but I did not realise he was the whole country's hero," she said.

"I didn't realise my father was the Chris Hani until he had died."

Lindiwe said that as a young child, her father did not live with the family because he was in exile. She would make up stories about his profession.

"I did not know he was an exceptional freedom fighter," she said.

Passionate, dedicated

Lindiwe said her father was passionate and dedicated to the country.

The realisation of what Hani meant to the people of South Africa was a blessing and a curse, she said.

"The curse was that I could never grieve for my father because the whole country was watching."

She said someone told her that she had to be stoic and put on a brave face.

"Twenty years ago my world was shattered..., [but] the people were and always will be here for our family.

"I miss my father everyday just as the nation misses Chris Hani.

"I have come to terms with sharing him.... He continues to thrive through all of us," she said.

Hani, who was also the chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), was shot dead by Polish right-winger Janusz Walus 20 years ago.
