Happy birthday 'president' Motlanthe: ANCYL

2012-07-19 14:43

Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League on Thursday sent birthday wishes to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, referring to him as "president".

"The ANCYL wishes president Kgalema Motlanthe a joyous and productive birthday," read the statement issued by ANCYL spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe.

She could not immediately be reached for comment on the choice of the word "president".

In June, the league sent birthday congratulations to former president Thabo Mbeki. He replied with a letter of thanks.

The ANCYL did not officially extend birthday wishes to President Jacob Zuma on his 70th birthday on April 12.

Zuma defeated Mbeki in the ANC's December 2007 leadership race in Polokwane, following intense campaigning for Zuma by the ANCYL. The league and Zuma have clashed since then.

In their wishes, the league described Motlanthe as a "politically, organisationally and ideologically sound leader of the ANC.

"He is also not one to sacrifice principle at the altar of expediency," read the statement.

The league called Motlanthe a "principled leader" with a "strong Christian upbringing" and gave him their endorsement for "when the time comes in the next few months".

"We are confident that the very values of principle, integrity and humility that define him will, when the time comes in the next few months, guide him in the execution of the mandate that the overwhelming majority of ANC members will bestow upon him," read the statement.

He deserve to be addressed as Prez Motlanthe, this man has moral and is dignified. I won't mind him being Prez of SA. Good for ANCYL to speak the truth no matter what they said before, people we must appreciate we still have honest leaders.

  • ongama.ntloko - 2012-07-20 10:49

The ANCYL referral to Montlante as president is indeed correct and should not be judged as undermining Zuma. Mr Montlante indeed became president of the country in 2008, he also has become president of numerous other organisations in his illustrious career, there should therefore be no suprise that he is refferd to as president. There was no specific mention of the era of his presidency or which organisation he leads. Be that as it is, I admire the mans adherence to principle, even though he is being taunted to lead the ANC he has not like the incumbent prior to Polokwane moved outside the tradition of the ANC and in a populist manner declare his candidacy. No t shirt of him or burning of his competetors face. Happy bday indeed Kgalema, it is befitting that your birthday comes a day after the great Mandelas. The gods or ancestors or God saw it fit that you should be born a day after Mandela, realy signifiying you as the next man to take the ANC to higher heights.

  • phillipm.seopa - 2012-07-20 10:52

I see nothing wrong because Motlanthe is a former President of RSA.

  • ako.gutshwa.7 - 2012-07-20 12:44

Just wait until he is elected just like President Zuma, remember if they elect you it means you have to do whatever they want never ever say no unless Motlanthe is prepared to do whatever

  • John - 2012-07-22 09:15

Its a lesson to everybody,no what your purpose in the organisation is,dont try to rule or to be bigger as the ANC or any other organisation.Have you ever seen this kind of behaviour in time of madiba, dont think so!!!!!!!!!!
