IFP claims plot to assassinate Buthelezi

2012-10-26 20:05

Johannesburg - The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Friday said it has unearthed a plot to assassinate its leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Blessed Gwala, an IFP official in KwaZulu-Natal, said security around Buthelezi has been trimmed, a move the party says is intended to expose him to attacks.

Buthelezi served several times as acting president under Nelson Mandela.

"There is a plot to assassinate Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi from the higher echelons of the country, including poisoning him," Gwala told AFP.

He claimed that South African authorities have reduced security apparatus around Buthelezi, leaving him with just two unarmed policemen who do not have a car.

"He has been stripped of his security so that he will vulnerable, so that when attacks come it will be easy to assassinate him," Gwala said.

"The grand plan is clear: It's to remove IFP from the political radar so that they will be a unitary state in this country," he said, inferring the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was behind the plot.

The ANC has rejected the accusations as outlandish.

"We are not a thuggish organisation. We are a respectful organisation who works within the laws of this country. We have no intentions of assassinating anybody," party spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.

The IFP and ANC clashed violently in KwaZulu-Natal the early 1990s, and while tensions have eased, they have continued to be rivals in the Zulu-dominated province.

The province has recently been hit by a rash of political violence.

It accounts for 80% of all political murders in the country in the last three years.

Observers blame the violence on the battle for political power.

Haha, toooooo funny, I say we get Zuma, Malema, Buthelezi and Magabe, throw them in a ring, with let's just go with Brock Lessner, fight to the death, last man standing wins, then so its not so bad, charge pay per view, and all proceeds go to a SA Charity of the winners choice, now that's something I would watch

      jon.jones.90663894 - 2012-10-31 02:25

In that ring I would replace Mangosuthu Buthelezi with your good self.

      henrileriche - 2012-10-27 08:34

He deserves security cause you ANC thugs love underhand tactics. No morals. No ethics. Zero. At least Buthelezi is someone of high standard. Something you cadres dont even know what i means. The majority of the people there seems like a bunch of knuckleheads.

      parys.fotograaf - 2012-10-27 10:17

Then Zoomer and his lot should also have no armed guards. Let us treat all thugs the same then.

  • suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-10-27 07:51

this old man just does not wanna let go, he is our own Mugabe, he has been to power for donkeys years and when someone challenges him, that person is either expelled or is silenced

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-10-27 10:16

The Zulu nation has done itself no favours by staring to support the ANC. Why on earth they decided to join the other groups is beyond me as they are numerous enough to have gone it all alone, even to have their own independent state, thus REAL freedom.
