Johannesburg - Implementing the National Development Plan (NDP) will be more difficult than creating it, President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday.

"In the next phase, we will need to meet more often to discuss the challenges and sharpen our approaches to implementation," he said in a statement.

He was pleased the government had begun to prepare the 2014 to 2019 medium-term strategic framework, which was based on the NDP.

"We are determined to ensure that we use the NDP to improve the lives of our people."

The presidency said on Wednesday that Zuma met the National Planning Commission (NPC) at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

He was briefed on support for the NDP from various sectors of society, and on the integration of the plan into the government's programmes.

He was also briefed on the NPC's areas of focus, including: advising the government on the implementation of the plan, using research to better understand problems and opportunities of implementation, and mobilising ongoing support for the plan.

The presidency said Zuma was satisfied that significant work had been done to prepare for the NDP's implementation.
