Intellectuals needed in SA, says Zuma

2012-05-24 22:33

Johannesburg - Intellectuals and academics have a role to play in the reconstruction and development of the country, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

He was addressing a lecture in honour of ANC founder Pixley ka Isaka Seme at the University of Fort Hare in Alice, Eastern Cape.

"As we remember him [Seme], we invite intellectuals and academics in our country to play a constructive role in the reconstruction and development of our country," said Zuma.

"As we build our young nation, we need our intelligentsia to contribute to a public discourse on whether or not we are achieving the goals of building a non-racial, non-sexist South Africa."

Zuma said constructive appraisals and criticism, from an Afro-optimistic perspective, would be helpful in building South Africa and Africa.

Zuma said the ANC's existence was owed to Seme.

"He is the father of ANC unity and collaboration. He wanted to see unity beyond ethnicity and tribalism," he said.

"We owe the existence of the African National Congress to this great man, who made a notable contribution to the development of our consciousness and national spirit."

Seme would also be remembered for his interest in the arts, especially writing and the media, Zuma said.

Once again the race card is played...

      Al - 2012-05-24 23:07

Maybe if the intellectuals weren't leaving in droves thanks to BEE and AA policies. The vast majority of people I know who want to have any career advancement are having to move oversees. I also met a really nice elderly black couple recently in London, who fled under apartheid, and returned to South Africa in 1994. However, they have returned back to the UK as the sheer incompetence and greed of the ANC government which they so vigorously fought and sacraficed for was becoming more and more apparent.

      carpejugulim - 2012-05-25 07:55

Would that be an intellectual by current SA education standards or measured against the rest of the world's standards?

      Michael - 2012-05-25 08:03

@Deeteem, Abram Lincoln did not have high school qualification; and Robert Mugabe has a doctoral degree. What is your point?

      justindeklerk - 2012-05-25 08:21

What an unintellectual thing to be said by the leader of the most idiotic government in human history. Drop the racist policies imposed by the anc and the "intellectuals" would not have to emigrate to have a decent future and security for their families. But keep saying stupid things and making big (violent) issues over ridiculous topics like a humorous painting, some individuals creative imagination, and everybody with a functioning brain and a few bucks saved up will eventually depart this intellectually barren land, or be financially, politically or physically massacred by the brainwashed zombies who blindly follow their brainless leaders.

      Koos - 2012-05-25 08:22

@michael.ntshabele: Didn't they revoke that doctoral? You comparing Abram Lincoln with Zuma? Whatever you are smoking I want some.

      Antebellum - 2012-05-25 08:44

How funny is this. The only time people speak of "reconstruction and development" of a country is after a natural disaster or after a war that destroyed the infrastructure. So is he admitting that the ANC has destroyed the country?

      TSR01 - 2012-05-25 11:44

'we invite intellectuals and academics in our country to play a constructive role in the reconstruction and development of our country," said Zuma.' Hold on a moment, while I ingest the context in which the notion of "reconstruction" in South Africa might be portrayed. I can contemplate off-hand the reason we would need such "reconstruction" in the first place, as well as the very real possibility of masked metaphors implying Black Empowerment (which is racist, because it unfairly discriminates against non-blacks on the basis of ethnicity; which is unconstitutional). The current ANC brought corruption, crime, racial division and poverty to South Africa as their "gift to the country", while all they have done is plunder, pillage, and perforate the infrastructure and funds of the country. Now with all the failing public services (no funding, because the ANC stole the money and/or gave illegal tenders to friends and family, who just kept the money), Zumatheshowerhead expects intellectuals and academics to "fix the problem" - but the problem is not the symptom (that being of failing infrastructure), the problem is the cause! The root of it all! THE ANC! THE ANC are what needs to be "reconstructed" - or better yet, DECONSTRUCTED. They are no longer a political party that can serve this country (have they even been trying?!?!). The ANC must go. Only then will ANYONE (intellectual, academic, or unemployed) be able to reconstruct and develop South Africa. VOTE FOR CHANGE.

      Jacques - 2012-05-25 11:49

@Tsotsi baby- I'm white, therefore I spell correctly. (If I may twist the famous quote)

      Smell - 2012-06-15 23:15

Tsotsi-baby is almost certainly White, and his Avatar picture is evidently how he likes to frame Afrikaners. He probably grew up in an environment not too far removed from trailerpark, and thus ended up being confused about mother tongue and class and how those subsets actually have no bearing on each other. One ride on the London subway should cure anyone with a delusion about English superiority. Unless that person of course has issues clouding healthy judgment. I have a feeling that the obese White Boy on the picture cannot speak Afrikaans. And to all contributors here suggesting White is somehow superior - you are unbearable idiots at the same level as Tsotsi-baby, and actually fit his picture.

I watched Zuma try and punt his idealogical hogwash in the Eastern Cape, or should I say I tried to watch while he tried, but really even though I really tried to listen, to see, to understand, if there was anything that he said that made any sense at all, I could not. The guy has really lost it, the minute he mixed up his words on the written speech it became even worse, then he broke off from the speech after he really mixed up his words, there he stood for what seemed to be at least a minute, on live television closed the written speech and tried to make something up and then it really became ridiculous. I am convinced the audience was bused in, because they did not seem to be students of East London's Forte Hare and they seemed to be cheering on queue. As a matter of fact, I am under the impression that all over the country even though ANC members still cheer for their 'Leaders' I think that come 'Maunguang' there is going to be many ANC-Eletist who are going to be surprised by the blind-side. Just judging by the smooth calculated reactions of the people in the assembly's. Sometimes the master's can be so full of themselves that they can't see that the cheers are not for the master. Those that are noticing the small details will agree, that politics inside the ANC, their speeches their alliance meetings and conventions are not what they use to be, and that there is a huge part of the ANC electorate not happy with the status quo of their top leadership structure.

  • antin.herinck - 2012-05-25 00:07

Why should they stay here when they can excel overseas. i mean look at eleon, he is on of the big boys for NASA and we chased him away. A home grown south african pretoria boy, gone because of BEE. Instead of learning from those people and implementing or learning and taking over, they take over without knowing how to turn the switch on... and zuma says, we need this skill and we need that skill... oh please shower spear man, all you are thinking about is which shabeen you have to go to find your next wife.

Grade 12 KZN high schools students were recently invited by the KZN university to attend an orientation day, students from various schools attended, the students were told about the facility etc etc then given an opportunity to ask questions. One student asked what is the quota system, the reply was 2% white and increasing accordingly, another student asked we are the first of the new free children, why are we not granted entry based on merit, and when will the quota system fall away? Neither of these questions could be answered. Most children have feelings the last time I checked, can you imagine how the demoralized those children who are now disadvataged left the faculty? But our president states intellectuals are needed? Really?

It is sad how u whites suddenly feel sorry for yourselves, if intellectuals are needed who said it doesn't have to be white? Talk about pulling the racist card now whose being racist? Either u deal with the anc or leave the country simple!

      Garth - 2012-05-25 06:28

@ hle.phewa: look around you.. The whites are leaving. They are getting better jobs and helping build other countries making them stronger. Africa is wallowing in the mud, demanding better roads (engineers) demanding better health care (doctors and nurses) demanding better education (teachers) but all the knowledge has leaked away.. Is it not more important to put development ahead of BEE? So I ask you.. Who is left in the mud?

      hle.phewa - 2012-05-25 07:41

And I ask u how many african graduates do you see in varsities?if ur brothers and sisters don't approve of our president shame on you cz he aint going

      Koos - 2012-05-25 08:09

And that is the truth hle.phewa. When I started my studies there where 55 people only 5 graduated. Of that 5 I’m the only idiot still in this country. If you can’t see the writing on the wall then no one can help you. I wish the government would grant a subsidy for especially white students to help them find a better future overseas. That way they get rid of the whites over time and you can have this country all to yourself.

      elize.vankerckhoven - 2012-05-25 09:18

@hle.phewa, graduating at what level?? 30%?? Come on be real look at for instance the doctors today at state hospitals and the ones that graduated 30 years ago, these doctors from 30 years ago are in top positions and earning big bucks, and not because they are white but because the pass rate those years were so much higher!!

  • Kathleen - 2012-05-25 06:17

Start by ensuring the phases in schools are right. Books on time, fully trained. committed teachers, decent school facilities. Then ensure the pass rates are 45%. Then allow entrance into universities on merit, based on top marks for matric. Then you might have some intellectuals.

  • Joseph - 2012-05-25 06:21

      elize.vankerckhoven - 2012-05-25 09:20

@Bomb if they are that intellectual they won't be voting ANC much longer!

After the ANC has gone, this country will need some serious reconstruction and development.

  • velvybokov - 2012-05-25 06:29

The problem is not that we need intellectuals in SA. The problem is that the ANC all think they're intellectuals. What we need is for people to stop being so arrogant and then hopefully when they stop talking about how they know what they doing and nobody else does, when they start listening to other ppls needs instead of their own greed... Then there might be hope for this country. We need humble leaders regardless of their level of intellect, not \I know what I'm doing\ kind of presidents.

  • Fairness - 2012-05-25 06:33

Sies Mr. Zuma. Saying this is an acknowlegement that your failing. Fix the schools as your long term solution and fix the police as the short term solution. Educated humans tend to be less violent, what this means is your intelectuals are looking for jobs outside of your borders cause they more often then not end up on the wrong side of a gun. Sies to all those who assosiates intelectualism with colour, if you didn't know you do know now - its racist to orientate your self that way.

First of all, this is an old nation that funtioned extremely well and that has been broken down to ruins in 18 years. Secondly, there is a very easy way to get intelectuals and academics back in the swing of things. Stop BEE now!!! How can this country be non-racial and non-sexist with BEE still functioning?? If you want to go beyond tribalism and ethnicity, then stop dancing around with your cowskin. What did this Seme contribute to the economy of SA? Being a lover of arts, he would have loved the painting of you.

      luvo.luvos - 2012-05-25 07:57

Bozo, what made apartheid SA look as if it were functioning well was because it was catering for the minority who formed 10 percent of the population and the ANC has to cater for the entire population with depleted resources. Before you mouth-off next time, please do some research!!!

      miriam.dandrea.5 - 2012-06-16 08:42

I vote ANC. Don't generalize. I have a right to criticize and a right to vote for the party I choose. I'm surprised at some of the comments here. We may not have a perfect government but we do have a Public Protector par excellence. Are our memories so short? I remember the horrors of apartheid and thank God that we are on the right track albeit with plenty of mistakes and corruption. Perfection is something we strive for while knowing that we are unlikely EVER to achieve it.

  • Mark - 2012-05-25 07:27

what a load of krap. my brother finished matric with 7 A's and couldnt get into med school here because of the quotas now he is studying meds abroad. do they expect him to return when qualified? rather be prepared to get medical treatment from people who just scraped thru school but wer of the acceptable race. WHAT A JOKE!
