Johannesburg – The first day of the ANC Youth League’s 25th National Congress has been marred by delays and logistical challenges.

National task team convener Fikile Mbalula said: “Traffic has become a nightmare in Johannesburg and some of the delegates were travelling long distances and slept late.

“The accreditation process was completed by midnight, we were only dealing with Gauteng in the early hours of this morning, we expect them to be delayed a bit.

“I am confident that the congress will start at around 12:00 and when we start we will have to move with speed to ensure that we cover the lost ground.”

Mbalula said a conference of this magnitude will be faced with challenges.

“There is nothing to write home about, this is a big project and to move people from hotels from as places as far as Kopanong to the venue takes a bit of time.”

Speaking about the nominations, Mbalula said he had only heard the name of North West chairperson Collen Maine. “I heard his name coming from all the PGC’s taking place but equally, tonight is the night and there will be nomination processes and structures will nominate either from the floor. We should not rush into conclusions."
