Judges must declare interests - KZN ANC

2012-05-13 17:29

Newcastle - Judges must declare their financial interests, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal resolved at its conference over the weekend.

This would "enhance transparency... [And the] promotion of ethical conduct", the premier's advisor, Cyril Xaba, said.

All public servants needed to disclose their interests - including judges.

Xaba was reading out the ANC's special resolutions taken at its provincial congress held in Newcastle this weekend.

The congress also resolved that judges had to recuse themselves from cases where they would have personal conflicts.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal was worried about the abuse of the judiciary by those "hell bent on undermining the ANC".

There needed to be a separation of powers, said Xaba.

Another special resolution taken was on the disbanding of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) provincial executive committee by the national leadership.

Xaba said the disbanding had left a vacuum in the province.

"[We] call on the ANC national executive committee to resolve the issue and the ANC regions must continue to support the ANCYL in the province," he said.

The ANC in the province resolved that the party needed to regain support in the Indian, coloured and white communities.

Xaba said the party was battling to attract young Indian, coloured and white people. He said the PEC needed to accelerate programmes of recruitment in these areas.

how can the ANC even be using the word transparency?

      Millos Mpofu - 2012-05-13 17:55

Yebo Dax u are right transparency is an English words so their must promote African words because we are in Africa our mother continent meanwhile it pains U to see African speaking your language

Hehehe, sure, judges must declare their interests. But its hypocritical comming from the ANC. They dont declare their own interests, but then want someone else to do so?

That is a very fair resolution judges must declare their interest, but why does the ANC need Indian and white vote is a mystery, they will simply vote their own,the voting lines in SA are based on tribal alliance,so called liberal whites votes DA and extreme right wing vote VF plus....actually their resolution is contrary to their conference, they supported Zuma simply because he is Zulu but want other people to disown their tribal alliance....Tribalism is keeping the progress of SA....instead of people supporting the country they support their own...nonsense if your ask me.we need a progressive president period.

Me thinks they're going to get pie in their face. These 'declarations' are going to be more against them than for them!!!!

I Like it. Very well said, Xaba. Thanks.

    And so must all MP's.....

  • pjcbs - 2012-05-13 18:22

The point the ANC does not appear to grasp at this stage is that the "young" people that the want votes from, are making their choices by what the see now, and not what the ANC has accomplished in the past. They see infighting, corruption, nepatism and and and. Judging on what the ANC is doing NOW, why would they want to vote fore them? The ANC want transparancy, but they want to hide so much themselves through legislation.

Yes, and apply the rule to all paid public servants/representatives. They either accept the job at the given pay level and have NO sidelines, or don't take the job. Simple as that. (And in the case of judges, they're certainly paid enough.)

This is rich..."there must be a separation of powers" means exactly that politicians, even the mighty ANC politicians do not proscribe the judiciary! Would that the ANC in KZN resolved that politicians declared their own and their families financial interests in schemes like the e-toll in order to promote ethical conduct and transparency!

  • Ted - 2012-05-13 18:54

Ya they should. So should all police officers in the management ranks and members of the ANCYL.

definitely judges must declare nd also da tenderpreneurs as well, no 1 is above da law.

I fully support the resolution taken at KZN ANC conference of recruiting indians, coloureds and whites. I attended the funeral of the late National Minister Comrade Roy Padayache in Durban recently there were very few indians compared to Africans, This is a cause for concern for non racial vison for the ANC. But if you can go to Suncoust casino at night you could see the majority of our indian brothers there, this is an ideal venue for the ANC to start recruiting both indians and Coloureds.

      WhiteNut - 2012-05-13 20:38

Lol, for some reasons, they love casinos. Even those whose religions forbid them going to casinos

How can anyone EVER take ANYTHING the cANCer say seriously. When they speak, its like hearing the toilet flush.

Are they seriously wondering why they cant attract better callibre members? If the ANC wants to attract quality young people from all racial groups they are going to have to clean up their act. Right now, the party certainly doesn't have anything that self respecting young adults could possibly want. Ridiculously immature behaviour by top officials, disregard for the needy, poor governance, flagrant theft and corruption - greed and self indulgence - inability to honestly earn the extravagant salaries they claim for themselves. This behaviour will only attract those who cannot better themselves and want also to feed at the governmental trough. If I was young I'd run a mile.

In principle I have no qualm with the resolution that Judges should declare their interests. It is important to promote integrity within the judiciary and resistence thereto merely creates doubt wrt Judges. Problem is, they need to be seen and found to be of good standing and of very good repute. For one, I would not be surprised if many of them still hold interest in a law firm while being compensated for the loss thereof. you make a choice...either or...not and and! My concern lies in the reason for this resolution, "hell bent on undermining the ANC." More and more the ANC is interfering in appointments of senior officials to "promote ANC values and policy". This is ridiculous. The admin is to be free of political interference, and if a black person is appointed it should be regardless of his alliance and allegiance. The aim is to build integrity and honesty without compromise. I totally disagree that political borders are to follow "tribalism". The ANC will do gr8 if it can get to a point of being inviting to all groups in this country, and actually respecting all groups. Bring ppl together instead of keeping them divided.

This should be upheld by all people who work in government from the top down. Their families should not be allowed to be connected to any government tender projects. This is what has caused all this fraud and corruption.......greed. Wives, children and family members allowed to have business's that gain from government these same people to put on board as directors. Can anyone tell me how so many of these people get to be shareholders in so many companies. I am sure we would all love to know how they got up there.
