Language board collapsing

Johannesburg - The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) is in a state of paralysis and needs urgent attention, Parliament's portfolio committee on arts and culture said on Sunday.

Chairperson Xoliswa Tom said it was worrying that 70% of the allocation the institution received was spent on employee salaries. This left a small amount to implement its work.

"PanSALB is an important body entrusted with developing, protecting and promoting all South Africa languages, but currently the institution is failing to implement this mandate."

The committee met PanSALB staff on Friday.

"It cannot be business as usual, something drastic needs to be done to turn things around if all South African languages are to be treated with the requisite respect."

The committee asked PanSALB's newly-appointed board to immediately put measures in place to rescue the institution. The board had to report back in three months.

Tom said her committee intended improving its oversight role.
