Learn from mistakes - Zille

2012-11-24 16:00

Johannesburg - The only people who never make mistakes are those who are too afraid to take risks, said DA leader Helen Zille on Saturday.

"If we learn from our mistakes, we create new opportunities," she told delegates at the party's federal congress in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

"The same applies to a political party. Our goal is to become the government of South Africa so that everyone has freedom they can use to build a better life."

She was confident that the Democratic Alliance would get there sooner than many people thought.

"It will not be easy. We respect the power of past loyalties. We understand how much we owe to those who struggled for our freedom... that is why we say 'honour your past but own your future'."

Zille said the opposition was determined to break the barriers that still divided South Africans.

She urged delegates to earn people's trust rather than to assume it or demand it.

She said the DA was not a party for racists.

"It is not a party for sexists, xenophobes, or homophobes," she said.

"And it is not a white party or a black party or a brown party... it is a South African party for all people united in the pursuit for a better life for everyone."

A lot of ignorant black and white South Africans are racists as ever. The sad thing is when blacks discriminate against their own kind.Who can blame them though? However I must caution everybody if Aunt Helen can pull out her card on the death of Steve Biko,I have a feeling it could level the ground in political landslide.

      PointBlank - 2012-11-24 16:27

      that's your opinion, not fact.

  • Mbuso Siera - 2012-11-24 16:24

and what r the barriers still dividing south africans...

      Carlton - 2012-11-24 16:26

The ANC does a brilliant job on focusing on our differences,

      rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-11-24 16:34

Mbusu: the BARRIERS are exactly what you, and everyone else, have created in your mind. As for boundries, now that is a very different question. Such boundries are created by politicians serving their own often devious or criminal ends, and maybe by people living their preferred lifestyle in accordance with the constitutional respect of minority rights.

      douglas.theron - 2012-11-24 16:42

The anc will make sure we never move on because it suits them to maintain the hatred because when we stop hating each other we will work together, when we work together we will stop fearing each other and we will start voting with our heads instead of with out hearts then they will lose power. So unfortunately they will continue to use the same propaganda techniques used by the other racist goverment that came before these racists

      douglas.theron - 2012-11-24 17:18

Exactly thats what they do by constantly reminding people they maintain a situation where they will be allowed to rule...

Really now! There will never be unity amongst humans beings, not in this life time. There are racists in the DA, ANC and all Parties. There are many "Whites" who are saying that it is social suicide to mix with Blacks etc. So, Helen, who are the WE, that you are talking about? Even if Angel Gabriel comes to earth you will all ask for proof that there is ONLY ONE GOD. Nevertheless, I admire you and your determination and courage. But I will not be voting next term for anyone human being. Jesus is the President

Fellow comrades, it's only a matter of time until the uneducated majority come to learn that the ANC does not really act for the people. All these defensive slanders of 'coconuts', 'white madams' etc are just a part of their propaganda that they are preaching in the townships. One day you will see that it is not about color, we should vote for people based on their skill, integrity, people who are role models. Zille is the only south African politician I've seen so far that would be worthy of leading this country. She doesn't just talk nonsense, she leads by example. The ANC are pulling the wool over the eyes of the poor. Maybe the terrible quality of school education is actually part of their plan, to keep the voters from being able to discern the truth.

  • sipho.zuma.796 - 2012-11-24 19:39

Comrade, we need to put aside our own selfishness and realise that it is not just about the money. And realise what the ANC are really doing. How can we be proud of this current leadership? Their is so much known corruption that has gone unpunished.

      Well said!

      stefan.alberts.77 - 2012-11-25 07:59

So very true. People vote for the ANC because they were comrades in the struggle. I totally understand and respect that, but the ANC is no longer a liberation movement, it is a joke being torn apart by people who only care about their own personal gains in finance and authority. And they do not care if they have to trample on their voters to get to the top.

  • sipho.zuma.796 - 2012-11-24 19:41

    Zille for president!

  • Kenni Gambo - 2014-02-16 17:10

Helen Zille is like Jacob Zuma, from the Z class. You wont find anyone commending both of them for their intellectual prowess. The one dances too much and the other complains to much. Zille's followers may do cartwheels in Main Street but she is a hypocrite, supporting BEEE then denying it, lambasting Zuma for appointing black faces then she goes and bootlick Dr Ramphele for her back face, she condemns the EPWP jobs as fake but last year boasted about how many EPWP jobs her provincial regime created. Colour aside, Ms Zille is not presidential material at all. Neither is JZ, who talks left but acts right, who fights for the poor but at wage negotiations he sides with those who fight the poor. We simply got the worst pair of the post 94 bunch. May they both vanish. SA deserves better.
