Ma Mbeki supports Zuma - sort of

2012-11-28 11:31

Johannesburg - ANC stalwart Epainette Mbeki has called President Jacob Zuma the better choice for ANC president though he may be too "easy-going" for leadership, the Times reported on Wednesday.

"He is easy-going and at times fails to make his own decisions," Mbeki told the paper.

"He wants to please everyone and, in the end, fails to fulfil all his promises. That is the weakness of his leadership and will be his own downfall as a leader," she said.

While the 94-year-old Mbeki expressed reservations about Zuma, she did not believe deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe was a viable alternative.

"I don't have confidence in Kgalema and would not vote him to the presidency. He is a difficult character to understand. One does not know what he stands for," Mbeki said.

"It is difficult to know where he would be leading the ANC and the country to if he could be president."

Mbeki is the mother of former president Thabo Mbeki, who lost the presidency of the ANC to Zuma and was eventually recalled as state president.

She said Zuma could not be blamed for Thabo Mbeki's political defeats as he had lost in "a democratic process".

"Thabo is a disciplined cadre of the movement. It was the national executive committee of the ANC - not Msholozi [Zuma] as an individual - who recalled Thabo."

    I agree wth u mama.

      raymond.romans.5 - 2012-11-28 13:40

"It is difficult to know where he would be leading the ANC and the country to if he could be president." So the president only leads the ANC. Screw the rest who don't support them?

      michael.smit.73997 - 2012-11-28 14:05

      clearly mama is going senile

      junior.mahlo.9 - 2012-11-28 14:39

well the points she raised make sense but what about corruption??

      phillip.cwazibe - 2012-11-28 17:47

Given a list of four candidates to choose from, she would choose differently. She mentions her difficulty with Mr Motlanthe who rightly chooses not to be on a slate that is designed to later claim paybacks.

  • john.mcguinness.9465 - 2012-11-28 11:47

She must be an amazing woman. She had at least two very clever children. Well done.

      konstabel.koekemoer - 2012-11-28 12:02

What she seems to be saying is that both candidates for ANC leadership are weak but she thinks Zuma is the the better of two evils. Not much of an endorsment.

  • ant.duke - 2012-11-28 11:49

  • maria.roth.589 - 2012-11-28 11:52

If Zuma is the best the ANC can do mama then it is better that they go.

  • karlu.unos - 2012-11-28 11:52

she is 300 years old... she worry bout going to heavan

  • timothy.mbele.3 - 2012-11-28 11:58

At least she is right about Kgalema. Nobody knows what he stands for and he is not campaining. People who are campaigning for him are corrupt Youth League boys. He is just waiting for the presidency in a silver platter. ANC does not have a leader at the moment.

      Thabo Dijoe - 2012-11-28 12:35

      That's so true, very true

  • werner.nel.712 - 2012-11-28 11:59

A leader who cannot make decisions.....

  • nhlakaniphog1 - 2012-11-28 12:00

Logogo mdala kabi, hands off. It does not what she thinks

  • phaldiemeyer - 2012-11-28 12:02

Com'n ma mbeki really...looks like your short term memory has gone because you forgot he publicly humiliated your son. Probably coerced by anc womens league to make statement

  • bongane.zwane.948 - 2012-11-28 12:09

She's in love with you know who. And mbeki will be child no.21 if she is sort of in her mind.

      steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-11-28 13:41

      Seriously warped Bongane.

  • dali.mpofu.9 - 2012-11-28 12:16

@stephen insulting and swearing her is unacceptable regardless of whether or not you agree with her.

      philemon.ndlovu.5 - 2012-11-28 12:31

I find it acceptable, stephen please continue

      dbo.kacebisa - 2012-11-28 12:32

U c with people like @stephen it is in their culture to insult elders with impunity. To them older people especially if they are black command no respect whatsoever. Quite different from Africans. We see wisdom in her words. We might hold different views to her but still she has to be respected. Thanx for calling him to order. To u @stephen you can take a hike and leave the country if you dont like it here. I bet you have a passport to orania ooops its not a country. U r stuck with us

      nhlapop - 2012-11-28 13:33

Can we show respect to elderly people please. Let’s not allow political statements to blow out our minds. Please young beautiful Africans. Let’s show respect to our elderly people. How can you disrespect 94 years old Mom like this.

      steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-11-28 13:45

@philemon. Your comment tells me that you have zero self respect, about as much as Stephen Dickhead above.

      philemon.ndlovu.5 - 2012-11-28 14:07

@Steve, your comment indicates that you also believe Zuma is a good leader. That makes you an idiot, I also have no respect for you.

  • freddie.miff - 2012-11-28 12:36

Zille for SA president, that is the only way to save this country from either of these two useless politicians.

Shame, it must be old age.

  • eddie.maleti - 2012-11-28 12:47

The 'sort of' part is regrettable for a supposedly reputable reportage. Ma Mbeki does not support Zuma, sort of. She is simply giving her synopsis on variety of offerings between these two ANC heavyweights.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-11-28 12:49

Shame she needs to re-evaluate her mind and her decisions... Anyone can see thats the wrong choice.

  • tikoloshe.hogana - 2012-11-28 12:56

i agree with u mama. eish this stephan is rude.

  • nathan.g.moss - 2012-11-28 13:01

‘He wants to please everyone’? I assume you mean everyone with the surname ‘Zuma’.

  • khaya.blaai.1 - 2012-11-28 13:01

Some people have made a career out of insulting adults. What the old lady has said is her view and she cannot be blamed for her conclusions. I must quickly add though that she will be proven right about the fact that Kgalema cannot be trusted and I am confident that a large number of ANC members agree with her. Zuma is a far better candidate.

  • deja.skenka - 2012-11-28 13:05

Thank u Ma Mbeki. I hav always known Basotho ppl 2 be streit4ward, and neva the ones 2 jikajika. I know bcos I am one. Inswelaboyas like Mosioa Lekota are an exception.

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-28 13:23

And here we all thought the Juju attack on the idiot Lamola brought SA & the anc to an all time low - BUT HEY we have still got further down to sink after all. It's like behind the old USSR Iron Curtain, when family members ripped into one another and had other family members persecuted and exterminated. But at least SA is fine & no crisis, bathed in the warm glow of a pagan skein of 12 oxen's blood!

  • mattcredible - 2012-11-28 13:24

94? Clearly senility has set in.

  • john.c.mohale - 2012-11-28 13:30

They've turned to 94years old for for publicity stunts. How about they hire her to provide leadership to see if her views will work? :) We are focusing on the future generation for our brighter future, they're focusing on the past/very old generation for our future. Shame

  • BulletProof. - 2012-11-28 13:30

We want a president that can govern and not to please everybody.

  • nhlapop - 2012-11-28 13:31

I think Mom Mbeki is fair here, she don’t want to defend her son because some stupid idiots might think she want Thabo Mbeki to be the president of the country again, Of which we can be happy if they can ask him to come and run this country again, not the like of Zuma, He was involved on decision to recall Mbeki. He’s a liar that one. No one trust him, He even lied in front of Parliament members about Inkandla saga. Shes right, Kgalema doesnt know where he stand, so i lost hope on him, unless if he can proove himself that he can stand against Zuma.

  • lynn.syme.1 - 2012-11-28 14:08

Clearly is was daddy Mbeki who had the grey matter. What a stupid stupid statement. This is not about the country anymore but more about respecting elders. Zuma is robbing the nation blind and she supports what he stands for? *shakes head in disgust*

      mzakes.matabata - 2012-11-28 14:19

      yo mama is stupid!

  • jo.vankatwijk - 2012-11-28 14:21

I am reminded of job interviews. An applicant is often asked where she/he sees herself/himself five years from now. They are also asked what positive contribution they think they can make to the company. This is what should happen prior to voting in SA. In that respect I agree with Mrs Mbeki. We don't know what Motlanthe plans to do for the country, but we sure as hell know what Zuma will do.

  • themba.nsele.71 - 2012-11-28 14:59

Some ppl will blame the lady and name this, age and that, the truth of the matter is since Zuma became a member of the ANC he has done nothing wrong but leaving his real African, hornets and humble, unfairly treated, even humiliated with his family by other parties, strongly defended by some of us, and so on. Every person even a five year old knows what Zuma stands for.

  • mshiniboys - 2012-11-28 15:42

Real mature words from the mother of this country.I love.

  • keabetswe.leshumu - 2012-11-28 16:05

"we do not know where he will lead anc and the country to"is there any politician the we know what he is gonna do/say? change is the solution coz somewhere somehow we gonna hit the rite note,we cannot have presidents for life, and we will never have the perfect president the little positive they contribute and more mess they make after 5 years somebody comes in rectify mistakes and make his own, they are calling us "the poor,"people on the ground"and "?our people"and this is collective so we are juju's,change is hard but alwys brings something new.
