Madonsela report 'to blast DA’s Midvaal'

2011-11-06 21:15

Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is preparing to release a shocking report this week that reveals serious irregularities and maladministration in the DA-controlled Midvaal municipality.

City Press has learned that the report - scheduled to be released on Tuesday - focuses largely on the actions of
Andre Odendaal, the party’s chair in Midvaal and lawyer for the council.

At the same time, the special investigating unit (SIU) is making progress with its corruption probe in Midvaal and has identified six problem areas.

According to SIU spokesperson Marika Muller, corruption and fraud could have negatively affected service delivery in Midvaal.

DA federal chairperson James Selfe said the mayor and municipality of Midvaal have co-operated fully with both investigations.

“When these institutions make their final reports, the municipality and the DA will study them carefully, and will take such action as is appropriate.

“However, until these final reports are published, neither the municipality nor the DA will engage in guessing games based on idle speculation, nor will we reply to questions that are tendentious,” Selfe said.

If they are guilty, I would hope that the DA would take a stand - fire the people who are guilty, and pursue criminal charges if appropriate. That would maintain your status of being head and shoulders above the competition. Cos we all know, in the ANC, if you're guilty of corruption, you get promoted.

      TamaraSays - 2011-11-06 22:06

The fact is, corruption is out of the hands of ANY party. It's either in individual human nature or it isn't. Where it DOES come into the hands of the party is in what they DO about it. If they take action, rather than sitting on their hands, looking the other way, then they STILL have the ruling party beat.

      Alfred - 2011-11-06 22:48

Yup. You said it yourself, " the ANC, if you're guilty of corruption, you get promoted". If corruption is tolerated, or encouraged judging by the actions of some of our esteemed ANC leaders entrusted with looking after our best interests, then it will obviously prosper. It has to be something that officials will never even think about doing. There are 50 million people in SA, why is it so bloody hard to find a few to run this place who aren't thieves?

  • pws69 - 2011-11-06 21:58

I look forward to reading the report. If guilty, then fire the b@stard/s. I don't give up my free time campaigning for the DA to support corrupt scum.

  • emile.marais - 2011-11-06 21:59

Good. Expose corruption where ever it may exist. No point in replacing one corrupt administration with another corrupt one. DA do the right thing and take a stand against corruption! Those of us who want an alternative need you.

  • Musa - 2011-11-06 22:01

    I just love this. I can't wait!

      Positiewe - 2011-11-06 22:25

Now lets hope he will next set his focus on other municipalities that are bankrupt as result of corruption, where there aren't even money to pay the staff. Where there are severe service delivery marches and violence as result. The ANC is running scared. Again trying the shift the focus off of their incompetence and corrupt members.

      Marion - 2011-11-07 11:55

@Positiewe - Thuli Madonsela, the Public Protector, is a woman... If the DA is guilty of maladministration and/or corruption they must be whacked as severely as they would like to see others whacked. Corruption and maladministration in any sphere of government is totally unacceptable and is continually hindering the efficient running of the country.

  • Marius - 2011-11-06 22:01

I wonder what kind of "kokkerotte" are going to come out of this closet...

      Michael - 2011-11-07 09:15

Not as many as from the ANCircus tent!

  • Arthur - 2011-11-06 22:06

One just gets the feeling the DA will do what is right if maladministration is uncovered. More than can be said of the ANC!

  • Saksak - 2011-11-06 22:06

Power has the power to corrupt not matter black, white or otherwise.

  • Cracker - 2011-11-06 22:17

Have we all gone mad? Or rather, have we all become so accustomed to the signs of madness that it doesn't matter any more.

  • Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-06 22:23

We would have less corruption if people didn't take a partisan political view of it. Sadly, what we usually see is the DA blaming the ANC for corrupt practices that they engage in themselves. It is for this reason that the ruling class will always get away with their crimes because people would have us believe that corruption is an ANC problem. What a load of none so blind as those who refuse to see nonsense, open your eyes , they are ALL having our eyeballs out and can't wait to get into that den of iniquity to climb aboard the rogues' bandwagon Things will never change while people blame a single mob, it gives credence to the other mobs. I am nontheless amazed at the maturity and soberness of most posters to date regarding the generalisation about corruption linked a certain race group. I know, no one has been found to have been involved in corruption to date.

      wolivierGR - 2011-11-06 22:44

The reality is that corruption is found everywhere form the Western world to the Far East and everywhere inbeween. From the smallest island to the biggest continent, corruption is everywhere. The reality is that humans hardly ever seem to do the correct thing, yet we seem to all sit in church once a week listening to what is rigth and what is wrong, but once business hours arrive, that's all forgotten. Corruption is negated by strong governance, strong financial procedures and the effective policing of those rules. Unluckily that is where we as a country are failing. The majority of corruption is never found or exposed. that in the end will lead to our own undoing.

  • Van - 2011-11-06 22:51

Show us the report. Then we can judge the DA on how they react. Then we can talk.

  • Cracker - 2011-11-06 22:54

Let's see. Just like John Robbie of 702 who tries so hard to appear clean and independent. Overcompensation perhaps? Hope not.

  • rlmbennett - 2011-11-06 23:52

To Paul and Co; rubbing your hands with glee now, heh? IF there was any corruption the DA will deal with it in a manner that would be morally correct, which is much , much more that can be said of the ANC. Shame, the poor ANC guys have been waiting so long for something like this news report. So funny.

  • MlunguX - 2011-11-07 01:20

Some DA dodgyness doesn't suddenly change the fact that the ANC is slowly becoming one of the biggest Mafia organizations on the planet...The DA is still the lesser of two evils of SA Politics...and deep down even the most brainwashed ANC profligate knows this fact...

  • Tony - 2011-11-07 05:39

Based on the results of this report the DA can win or lose votes. If they set an example now the people's confidence will grow, but furthermore they should go a step beyond and get a thirparty company to audit all their municipalities. this shows the population the they are pro active and will not tolerate corruption. The issue here is not who is guilty of what but rather how it is dealt with. You will never find a perfect party because it is made up of many people. But if the party as a whole demonstrate that they take a hard line on this they would be securing votes come election time.

  • Silvana - 2011-11-07 06:10

This is truly disappointing news. I live in Midvaal and I have nothing but praise for the DA. Everything runs smoothly. Hope they nail the guy and make an example of him if he is guilty.

  • phillip.havenga - 2011-11-07 07:17

I think the biggest difference between a DA controlled municipality and a ANC controlled one is that corruption is dealt with with under the DA which makes it so more notable than under the ANC as all they seem to do is congratulate the person for stealing money but discipline them for getting caught.

  • sidney.gilroy - 2011-11-07 09:08

Here`s the fundamental flaw with the DA : There is no succession after Zille. I cannot recount ONE possible national leader after her that shows any prominence whatsoever right now. The party is, was and will always be perceived as a safe-haven for the white vote. And that is the last thing you want to be in Africa. A white man`s party. Because you will always just represent a minority.

      Michael - 2011-11-07 15:25

  • Had - 2011-11-07 09:36

If he is guilty, us DA supporters will DEMAND that he gets fired but lets wait for the report.

  • Phillys - 2011-11-07 10:30

dozens and dozens of ANC run councils in the Gauteng region that are hopelessly corrupt, bankrupt and dysfunctional, but the one DA run council that actually delivers is the source of the public protectors investigations???? Laughable!!!!!!!

  • ludlowdj - 2011-11-07 11:03

The DA is just as accountable as the ANC if they have done something wrong they must pay the piper, in this case the price will be very high indeed. As the only opposition to the ANC the DA must act with haste and to the maximum extent of the law against guilty parties to prevent them disqualifying themselves as a future government.

  • Cheryl - 2011-11-07 11:07

good, am a da supporter , so am pleased they have been identified...lets show the Fraudulent Congress how to deal with corrupt. then they can apply this to their 90% members that r crooked.

  • Musa - 2011-11-07 13:33

Some people here are trying to defend the DA even before they see the report. This defeats this daily rhetoric "ANC this and that". Let's leave the ANC out of this, this is about Devil's Alliance. We have said so many times, "Something is wrong in Midvaal." You know what they said, "Midvaal is the only municipality in Gauteng with clean governance. Clean governance? I guese the report will reveal that. I guese they are going to call Madonsela with all sorts of names like they did with Tutu when he said whites must pay wealth tax. They love it when the ANC is lambasted. I can't wait to see the report!

      Titisi - 2011-11-08 11:29

you are right musa.i work in midvaal and i know how corrupt they are and they are doing itin such a way that we cant complain but to complain to ourself.lets wait and see how lucky they are these time

  • Jan - 2011-11-08 13:31

Look how fast they react on investigations into the DA, but when it is into the ANC it always takes forever and eventually just sort of disappears! But yes, I am sure the DA will take the necessary steps against their own if they are found to be corrupt!
