8 officers suspended for Guptagate

Bloemfontein - Free State Premier Ace Magashule must explain the alleged abuse of power used to secure permission for a privately-chartered Gupta family plane to land at Waterkloof Air Force Base, the DA said on Friday.

Free State Democratic Alliance leader Patricia Kopane said her party gave Magashule three days to account for a letter, sent by the provincial government to Shivpal Yadav, a minister in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, inviting him to visit the province.

On Friday, the Mail and Guardian newspaper reported this invitation was possibly used to secure diplomatic permission for the Gupta plane to land at Waterkloof.

However, there was no evidence that any official business was done with the Free State government.

It was reported that the pretext of an official government-to-government visit was allegedly used to justify the controversial landing of the Guptas' private plane, filled with wedding guests, at the military base.

Kopane said the public needed to know why Magashule, a close ally of President Jacob Zuma, allegedly abused the Free State government to benefit a family with close ties to Zuma.

"It is likely that the premier pulled these strings for the president because Magashule's son is in business not only with the Guptas, but also with Duduzane Zuma."

The invitation was on the letterhead of the Free State agriculture department and signed on behalf of the then MEC, Mosebenzi Zwane.

Kopane said Magashule must immediately produce the memorandum signed between Pradesh and the provincial government, and detail who he met.

The DA said a failure to produce these documents would confirm that Yadav was in South Africa for the Gupta wedding, and not official business with the Free State government.
