Johannesburg - City of Joburg DA chief whip Mmusi Maimane officially kicked off his election campaign, as the party’s Gauteng premier candidate, at an elaborate rally in Kliptown on Saturday.

About 7 000 supporters turned out for the event. As blue confetti rained down on the event, Maimane’s face and name was splashed across posters, T-shirts and other electoral paraphernalia. While waiting for his arrival, the crowd watched clips of him visiting other communities. They were also entertained by a rap group playing DA-themed hip hop numbers.

According to the Sunday Independent, Maimane addressed the crowd in Sotho, Zulu and English. His message was clear: don’t vote for more of the same.

Maimane is the DA’s premier candidate for the province – a province the party hopes to win in next year’s general elections. Maimane’s key electoral stance is the creation of jobs in the province. He has said that if he wins he will help create hundreds of thousands of jobs in Gauteng.
