Mandela won't attend ANC celebrations

2012-01-06 12:00

Bloemfontein - Former president Nelson Mandela will not attend the ANC's centenary celebrations in the Mangaung municipality in the Free State at the weekend, the ruling party's secretary general said on Friday.

"I think it would be unreasonable for any South African to expect Tata Mandela to travel from Mthatha to Bloemfontein," Gwede Mantashe told SABC radio news.

He said he visited Mandela in his home town Qunu in the Eastern Cape on December 21.

"He is in good spirits but very, very old," said Mantashe.

"The old man is 94. He is not coming and we are not expecting him to come."

Earlier in the week, ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete told journalists the party hoped Mandela would be able to be there. She said a total of 46 sitting heads of state had confirmed their attendance for the event.

    He's ashamed

      Tc - 2012-01-06 12:28

ANC has become an insult to Mandela!

      StarStruck - 2012-01-06 14:22

He's 94 for peets sake!! You are speculating. Show some respect!

      Obie - 2012-01-07 00:31

      fenderbender..ha ha great track.

Leave Madiba alone to enjoy his final years in harmony. Let him do what HE wants to do not what YOU want him to do!! Such a Great man he is. Father, grandfather & great grandfather to 50 odd million people!

      Ian - 2012-01-06 12:29

Thing is Mark, the modern ANC is tarnishing and even detroying Madiba's legacy and all he fought for with their mismanagement and corrupt ways. I personally feel sorry for him. He's lived to see he's dream come true, and then break apart at the seams.

      Mark - 2012-01-06 14:47

      Ian, well said totally agree

  • Newsmonger - 2012-01-06 12:20

@Bardy Agreed I wouldnt expect a man of his stature to even contemplate fighting he has founght for enough in this country. With his clout he could kill their political careers at the drop of a few words. I dont expect to see him rallying support but at the same token this is not what he envisioned.

      Tc - 2012-01-06 12:31

Remember the scene where Mandela allowed himself to be hauled onto a stage with Zuma - just to win votes for the ANC plunderers? Must say - when I saw that I lost much respect for the old man. Sad!

  • Jos - 2012-01-06 12:42

    He most probably refused.

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2012-01-06 12:46

I hope the old man is not going to be dragged to this orgy like in the last general election campaign rally.

      Piet - 2012-01-06 13:02

And the ANC is a orgy!

  • Douglas - 2012-01-06 13:04

    Is this your Christ?

      Rudi - 2012-01-06 13:14

Maybe a christ to some of them. In some circles even an antichrist (in the place of Christ). When I look at how some people are worshipped because of their status in life ie. Oprah, Mandela etc, I shiver.

it is only importent if our future president JM is attending

      Helmut - 2012-01-06 13:13

You mean You mean JM the Clown

      Blade - 2012-01-06 13:24

JM is busy attending to my garden.

      George - 2012-01-06 13:34

Anyone who sees a future leader in woodwork boy and his ancyl cartoons is definitely and idiot. Does he know anything about good governance? How economics and the financial market work? All he knows is to speak rubbish in the name of the poor. He has not articulated anything that seeks to address poverty in this country. He is politicking and he will continue to do so just for his own benefit. By the way has he passed his exams with UNISA?

      Newsmonger - 2012-01-06 13:39

MSh: seriously - importent, Wow can see you are a loyal follower.Hopefully he is impotant.

      Newsmonger - 2012-01-06 13:44

@ Msholozi : Wouldnt expect much more of you, reading your other brain farts that litter this site. Do you honestly believe the fatboy posses the same integrity that our former president, Mr Madela has? If so you need to go back to that crack pipe - the one had an idea of a united nation such was his plan for '95. Now looking into the mouth of an ignorant toddler trying to make sense of your so called president of the yl. Tell me what has he done for you besides running his mouth and talking rubbish? He enjoys the comfort of his 16million house while the ignorant and stupid, namely YOU chase after him and give him support. Economic freedom by Juliaaas's dictionary means ; "Pie, more houses for me and your tin shack stays on to the next decade."

  • gennath - 2012-01-06 13:15

Wow, we forget that he's 94.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-01-06 13:48

I wish Baleke Mbete also realizing it. How can you even "hope" for Mandela to attend. He is old and need to be left alone. Having a nice rest. The cheap political benefit some people will try to score out of it is ridiculous. They should rather try to be good leaders and stop trying to use him to fill there lack of it. My mom is 83 and I know what mission it is for her to visit us. Not only physical, but mentally as well.

      H - 2012-01-06 18:30

The man has done his work, and even in how he chose to leave office he set an incredibly high standard as a true leader. He has earned his peace and quiet. He owes neither the ANC nor the average citizen anything, and I for one remain grateful for his contribution to our history. Let him rest as he chooses now.

  • Mantsho - 2012-01-06 21:03

It is good for Nelson Mandela not go this party, this people are destroying his legacy.they are not good at all.

  • Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-01-06 23:03

Or maybe Madiba doesn't like what the ANC has done to SA.

  • Obie - 2012-01-07 00:30

not even Madiba wants to be associated with this bunch.. by the way this racist must be silenced this racist must be silenced this racist must be silenced this racist must be silenced

  • Serame - 2012-01-14 09:58

Fair enough,We all agree he old and must be left alone..But suprisingly JZ pulled a fast one on him during the national elections..Remember how frail he looked..nut bcos JZ and his cronnies knew that bringing himm aboard would attract favourable votes for JZ..i LUV anc as a liberation movement that has given all in this country a basic human dignity and all the freedoms thereof..But the current leadership is digging a grave..Shame on JZ and his cronnies
