Mangaung bomb plot - 7 held

2012-12-17 07:09

Bloemfontein - A right wing plot to bomb one of the ANC’s conference tents has been scuppered by police.

The seven alleged terrorists were nabbed allegedly planning to blow up one of the big plenary tents used for the ANC’s 53rd national elective conference.

They were arrested on Sunday by a joint task team of the Hawks and crime intelligence in Bloemfontein, Douglas in the Northern Cape and Mookgophong in Limpopo. The arrests by the joint task team followed weeks of investigation.

City Press has reliably been told that one of the alleged right wing plotters has made an admission of guilt before a magistrate.

The Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court also issued search warrants for the police to raid a house owned by one of the suspects in Bainsvlei, Bloemfontein.

It is expected that the seven suspects will appear on a charge of high treason in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court soon.

ANC 'not aware' of plot

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said he was “not aware” of the bomb threat.

“It is good they did not make us aware. This way the conference has continued without disruption. It is a good thing they have been arrested. We have ANC members, journalists, priests and ambassadors here. It would have been terrible if anything had happened.”

Security was tightened around the conference, with a visible police presence and security officials on the campus of the University of the Free State on Sunday.

On Saturday, delegates were informed that their vehicles would only be allowed on campus after they were accredited at the nearby Tempe Military Base.

Vehicles were checked, provided with accreditation stickers and escorted by police to the campus.

No unaccredited vehicles are allowed on the university’s campus and delegates go through at least three layers of security before they reach the main plenary tent. Similar security measures were put in place at previous ANC gatherings.

At the party’s 2007 Polokwane congress, journalists and delegates were made to park outside the University of Limpopo’s Turfloop campus and enter on foot.

Only accredited vehicles that had been searched were allowed inside. At the party’s policy conference at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand in June, there were mobile X-ray scanners vetting vehicles as they entered.

Several roadblocks on routes to Bloemfontein were reported.

SA Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Phuti Setati said he could not discuss details of their security operation.

“The mandate of the SAPS is to ensure that law and order is maintained, and that the event goes ahead smoothly,” he said.

City Press reported last week that crime intelligence was sending a large group of police spies to Mangaung.

We certainly do not need to return to a time when political opponents blew one another up and killed innocent people in the process. Madness.

Frederick and Thuthothegreat, you guys are idiots who should be locked up in a clinic for the mentally insane. "Those in power" Frederiidiot, and Thutho thegreat-idiot, are made up of all racial groups. thabo.letsoalo - 2012-12-17 08:15

infact I am suprised that people with your ideology never tried to over throw the former regime that denied fellow human beings their rights, equality, education, housing, land. You and your likes never spoke against the impact, the emotional scars, the low self esteem, the intergenerational poverty that was created by your regime and tranferred to a generation of people that you thought and still think are not equal to being white. Get me right, i hate corruption and i dont even vote anc, but i am not a hypocryt, who longs for apartheid to return. I am glad we have a democratic state, that does not imprison YOU for your biased views that you put on this platform. Of course, there is extreme poverty, crime, a bad education system corruption by both government and big PRIVATE (some how only government gets mentioned where as big private such as thales and and group 5 have been implicated). A united nation can overcome all these, they are absolutely nothing compared to the humiliation that entire generation of people suffered under both colonization and apartheid.

@thabo.letsoalo: wahahaha this is epic. Still believing the rhetoric drivel spewed at you by the money hungry thugs sitting at Mangaung sipping Jhonny Walker Blue? Apartheid never denied you any of these things mate. They gave you a piece of land which was to be your own. Governed by your own. Hell they even gave money and active support to each and every homeland. The plan was to give each group their own country. That which failed you is the tribal counsel in your homeland. In other words, your own government that is currently in control is the one that actually denied you any form of healthcare or free enterprise or education. So please before commenting about what is and what was please get your facts straight.

      jesibelle.krueger - 2012-12-17 11:12

To reiterate: Is this not just soooooooo convenient for the ANC..? Mmmm - is it not exactly what they need to draw attention away from the fact that they cannot govern a country, that they are one of the most corrupt governments on earth, that 88% of the national budget is handed to their commie comrades in salaries, that all whites are the enemy, that the (supposed) "right wing" are so stupid that they get caught, etc. I am not denying anything - the fact that it is convenient can however NOT be ignored. SA is NOT a democracy - it is a Communist Tyranny of the Masses (the furthest from a democracy imaginable).

      themba.maseko.568 - 2012-12-17 13:36

Everyone was making noise about the level of security at this conference, now we know why they put up this high security. I know a majority of SA irrespective of color and political affiliation support the democracy we have. As for you Alicia, I thought you were a sensible person until today. Shame on you to support this attempted terrorist act. There is no apartheid in SA, no Lack of freedom of speech, no abduction of political opponents, etc, as in the days of apartheid, so there is no need for violent retaliation.

Heinrich, Stop with the handling out of accolades to the very reason we currently find ourselves in. Forget about isolated issues and a root cause analysis would enlighten your perspective. Might as well preach about Nazi accolades,,, It really is that obtuse.

      jesibelle.krueger - 2012-12-17 16:52

@zapadela.tistarocha, South Africa is NOT a Democracy - it is a One-Party Dictatorship. The USA, Canada, Australia and alike - those are examples of a Democracy. Your comment is as irrelevant as the vacuum between your ears.

This news article lacks detail. If someone already admitted to this in court then his name can be published. Sounds fishy to me.

      antebellum.axiom - 2012-12-18 00:57

@ DelusionBuster You see, you don't even realise that you are holding two contradictory beliefs. You are saying that you are embarrased about alleged, unknown conspirators, which you assume are afrikaners and who have not yet commited any acts of terrorism or been convicted of any such acts. And you see them as low life scum not worthy of your Afrikaner title. ...But at the same time you praise and idolize a self confessed and convicted terrorist who is personally responsible for the deaths of many innocent civilians including women and children....but...you see him as a saintly role model worthy of adulation? How do you explain these two vastly different(complete opposite) stances on the same issue, namely terrorism? The only answer that I can think of is that it must be psychological in nature. You sir, suffer from cognitive dissonance with a dash of Stockholm Syndrome, as does most liberal zombies. If you would like some more information regarding your condition, I suggest you check out the following links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

      heinrich.etsebeth - 2012-12-18 09:00

zapadela the reason we are in this situation is because people like you that refuse to open their eyes to see the bigger picture. I didn't hand out accolades of any kind. I didn't sing any prazes. I merely stated the facts. If you are too blind to notice that a bunch of terrorists is running the country then I really do feel sorry for you.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-12-18 10:54

The desperate leftists are seeing 'rightwing terrorists' behind every bush. We all know the left has been responsible for more than a hundred million deaths in the last century. Stalin, Mao Ze Tung, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mandela, the ANC…were all terrorists of the worst order and guess what? They were all left. The left covers up these facts of history and makes the conservatives out as the extremists. For years they have used the word “racist” as a synonym for “conservative”, but seeing that it has lost effect and the conservative movement has grown exponentially in the last few years, they have now found a new synonym for “conservative” namely “terrorist”.

  • debduplessis - 2012-12-17 07:17

what terrorists??? no terrorist organisations declared in RSA .... in fact the last one was unbanned in 1991 - it was called the ANC

      ronald.stilianou - 2012-12-17 08:43

Delusion b What are they doing different from what the church bombing, child killing ANC heros did? You can't tell me that what the ANC is doing to the white people in this country is any different than what the apartheid regime has done to the black people. All we need is the dompass system. I don't condone what these idiots are trying to do but how long before a race gets oppressed enough to start doing this kinds of terrorist attacks? Maybe you are not at the moment in a position of utter desperation like some white people I come into contact with on a daily basis. Imagine telling your children that there is no Christmas this year because dad is too white to get a job in this country. I pray that you don't ever stand in the shoes of such a father. Most whites don't see it getting better for them, sooner rather than later one of these attacks are going to be successful, and that is the day the sh$t is really going to hit the fan, Believe me, I don't want them to be successful, but this exact social behavior can be seen all through history.

A case in point of the maniacal paranoia of the Looney Left. Just over a year ago the so-called 'white rightwing terrorist' Willem Ratte and nine others were arrested during a police raid on his farm in Balmoral, Mpumalanga on Oct 1 2010 on ridiculous trump up charges. For those of you who remember the high level publicity in the ANC-news media about the socalled 'white racist terrorist' Willem Ratte and the case of the raid on his farm with the so called “weapons-cache”; ‘child-pornography claims’ and ‘dagga-possession’ eagerly published by the news-media, yet they had no proof… - here’s something you won’t hear from the ANC-controlled news media as dramatically as they reported the white man’s arrest - the state quietly withdrew all the charges on September 24 2011 in Witbank court - a year later and at a huge cost to the taxpayer, the state’s case collapsed and the charges against Willem Ratte were withdrawn. The single state witness the government had disappeared without a trace. The government apparently reacted on “rumours”… Not a single word was written about it in the main stream media...

All suburbs would be cordoned off,Road blocks every 200 meters, all legal fire arms would be taken away under emergency laws the freedom that you have now would be taken away.Torture would happen to hundreds to gain more information, Bank accounts Frozen . So i say once again They are Idiots. Go and use your vote it does count we do not need another war. Do not give the ruling party a excuse to use the powers they have to put us back 20 years.

Oldest tactic in the book. Unite a divided nation by creating a common enemy. The National Party were masters at this; the ANC learned well... The truth is, the right-wing (what's left of them) are a bunch of half-educated lard-arses who can barely find enough energy to turn over a roll of boerewors on the braai.

      heinrich.etsebeth - 2012-12-19 07:06

Zamani, I am sure you like BBBEE very much as judging by your communication skills there is no way in hell I will employ you unless forced to do so. If you were the only one to apply for the job then I will even refuse to do so. Get this entitlement idea out of your thick skull, get an education. Prior to 1994 there was not a think like BEE. You had your own homelands where you could get a job freely. Today the law protects someone from their employer even if they are acting to the detriment of their employer. Striking should not be a right. If you are unhappy about your current employer and your salary you can go sit around a table and negotiate. If that does not help you are always welcome to go and look for a different job. But as already determined your communication skills leaves a large gap that no human resources person in their right mind can look past. If you can not communicate effectively then you do not belong in any work environment.

Yes, I want to live to see the ANC not longer govern this country, but I am working hard and will continue to work hard to see this happen through the democratic tools in place in this country, tools the once great ANC have worked and fought hard for. It is my hoe that these bomb plotters will feel the might of the law come down on them, and, if found guilty, will have to face full punishment. I believe in a true multi-everything South Africa, where we can and will one day live in peace together.

The ANC must unite and stop infighting, the enememy is out there waiting to strike. Zuma for second term!

      nic.nomicos.3 - 2012-12-18 00:10

What the hell is an enememy dude !??

  • Bob.Cee123 - 2012-12-17 08:30

Can't help but think this is a carefully timed set up by the spin-doctors to make the ANC look like victims again. If it was a genuine plot, well done to the police and may the 'plotters' receive the full might of the law.

      nic.nomicos.3 - 2012-12-17 08:32

      With you on this...

  • robert.rob.7505 - 2012-12-17 08:33

I for one am sceptical as to the authenticity of this account. Remember the Boeremag saga - the cops, according to news reports were in on creating this so-called Boeremag. The cops apparently supplied the ingredients to make the bombs and they also wrote a certain document detailing how the mag would take over the country. All this to elevate their own importance and endear themselves to the current powers - with the prospect of recognition and promotion. Sounds like the story of our beloved new democratic SA

  • kurt.hilder - 2012-12-17 08:34

wait... so the people who blew up a wimpy other civilian establishments were 'freedom fighters' and now these men are terrorists? it's all the same if the anc were doing what was expected things like this would not be nessesary.

  • Charles Szente - 2012-12-17 08:42

I really cannot understand some people's thinking. Violence only breeds more violence and cannot be condoned in situations like this. As a white African I am glad they have been caught as, from my perspective, all they could have achieved is further division between South Africans, giving racists from all side the excuse to retaliate over and over again thereby making our, the vast majority who cares about this county's situation, worse. Come on why not take that energy and use it for something positive, something that leaves a better South Africa than the one they found.

      jerry.phillips.393 - 2012-12-17 08:47

      Good point.

      vusimuzi.malindi.1 - 2012-12-17 09:09

SA would be a much better place if we didn't have black and white but just South Africans, you made a very good point there sir

  • jerry.phillips.393 - 2012-12-17 08:44

Credit to the law enforcements. The struggle to alleviate poverty, unemployment, inequality, income gap between black and white continues.

  • mbele.andile - 2012-12-17 08:47

To those who thnk this myt just b a fabrication, yees the anc is capable of lying, but can they rlly go this far??

  • nspaynter - 2012-12-17 08:52

I find this very far-fetched. Cannot believe there are whites who still need to resort to these kind of tactics. All it is doing is creating more black on white hate. And giving blacks a stronger reason for voting ANC. Leave the ANC alone. It is in the process of dying from within anyway.

      lourainet - 2012-12-17 09:34

I like ur comment, me too thot twice cus the point will like ths guys wanna kill blacks n then continue vote anc havin thot of DA being whites party, we need to beat anc fair n it is clear soon thy will loose guys

  • tumilegend - 2012-12-17 08:57

What day was it yesterday?SOME people have a short memory indeed*sigh*.

  • lovemaster.arthur - 2012-12-17 09:00

if they are unhappy with the current government, they should remove the leadership democratically during 2014 elections. bombs don't work in a democratic country.

  • lee.brand.73 - 2012-12-17 09:12

Idiots. We really dont need bombs at this stage of the game. The ANC is busy imploding all by itself.
