Mashatile heckled at ANCWL event

2012-09-28 21:06

Pretoria - Delegates at a Gauteng ANC Women's League conference heckled provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile when he joined their event in Pretoria on Friday afternoon.

Mashatile, who is believed to be opposed to a second term for President Jacob Zuma, made hasty strides to the exit, shortly after he had entered the room and sat in front of the delegates.

The delegates burst into a chorus: “Mashatile, tsamaya! [SeSotho for 'leave']”, and the arts and culture minister scurried towards the side entrance.

Outside the room, Mashatile declined to comment on the incident. He held a brief meeting the leadership of the league.

Most of the delegates made chants suggesting their intention to have President Jacob Zuma re-elected as African National Congress president at the upcoming Mangaung elective conference.

Some were waving two raised fingers.

Soon after Mashatile left, the delegates united in singing Zuma’s signature song, “Umshini wami”. Most songs that were sung at the event were in praise of Zuma.

Mashatile later returned to the room flanked by senior members of the league including provincial chair Patricia Chueu.

Chueu lectured delegates to observe discipline and respect other members of the party.

“Let us stop singing songs promoting people here. This conference is not about any individuals but the ANC, we must always remember that. We need to be disciplined at all times and respect the right of others to choose,” she said.

"Today we find ourselves divided and that is not healthy. The Bible tells us that we are one body of Christ. It is not healthy to find people fighting amongst one another,” said Chueu.

After she spoke, he took the podium and delegates listened quietly as he spoke.

"There are new tendencies that when we go to conferences we insult our leaders. There are no enemies. We are all children of the ANC," said Mashatile.

"That is the spirit that we should take to Mangaung. Respect and unity."

He added: "I don't believe that contest is disunity."

Delegates responded by noisily waving their hands with two fingers raised, the gesture believed to show support for a second term for Zuma, and singing pro-Zuma songs.

They also shouted, "Zuma, second term!"

The singing drowned out Mashatile's voice.

Women's League president Angie Motshekga, who received a resounding welcome, then stood up and tried to silence the crowd.

Mashatile stood on the podium, saying "Comrades, I am about to finish...", but was once again drowned out by the crowd.

He eventually joined in the singing, and danced on the podium as the delegates sang pro-Zuma songs.

After more than 20 minutes of singing, the delegates stopped and Mashatile went to sit down.

He did not finish his speech.

Mashatile earlier this month said at an ANCYL event: "We must renew our leadership and make sure when we elect leaders in Mangaung... we bring in the new generation of leaders...

"We need radical change so that in 18 years or 20 years of democracy our people can look back and say 'we have a better life'."

What a bunch of ill-disciplined, rowdy and intolerant lot the current ANC is made up of! From their so-called 35 year old fat young men calling themselves the Youth all the way to the top. There are clear signs that the Mangaung conference is going to be the mother of all circuses

It is a pity that leaders fail to understand that you cannot pronounce on any position begore consulting the structures of the organization you represent. Structures are now voicing their wishes and leaders are going the opposite direction.

  • mncedi - 2012-09-28 22:12

Now it makes sense why Angie Motshekga was not suspended on the text book saga, she had a job at hand to mobolise womens league to support Zuma. Paul is right we need new leadership that can take the country forward!

ANCWL is a group of mothers, they dont think with emotions, these people know where this organization comes from and what it went thruogh, they need stability of this organization, ANC has a history, this party is can NOT be reduced to factionalism and greed to protect people who are ill-disciplined so that they destroy VALUES that made this very same party.

      Michael - 2012-09-28 23:43

Who raped who when? i dont remember anyone in the ANC found guilty of a rape case, are you talking from emotions or facts? You must understand the meaning of constitutional state, respecting outcomes by the judiciary is what matters, so get educated baba!

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-29 05:23

Too late Michael. The `cadres` started off by bliksemming each other with seats, bottles of water and stabbing each other. It's getting worse: they are shooting each other to death as they sprint for the best seats in the gravy train. Factionalism has become the order of any day in this organisation my friend.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-09-29 04:03

Same circus, same clowns. 100 years of anc and all they care about are the seats on the gravy train. They never got rid of the nats, the nats capitulated because they were bankrupt, both morally and financially. Their financial bunkrupcy was because of sanctions , the anc bancrupcy is because of greed . When the greedy steal the money then there can be no service delivery. The anc is a big dissapointment to the people of south africa. Maybe they will get it right in the next 100 years.

  • letlhogonolo.selebalo - 2012-09-29 08:06

to renew leadership, the ANC must renew its memebership, ANCWL consists of mostly the wifes of these ppl therefore they are all controlled by a remote control. I never lykd thm frm polokwane, they fail to support their own 4 presidency. They dnt wna hire, they wna be hired all da tym.

More proof of the ANC in any form, inability to accept a view that does not align with it's own agenda. Also proof of the weak character of persons who make up the ANC and prey on peoples emotions, earlier this month Mashatile was calling for a change in the ANC's leadership, when he saw that his belief would not be accepted by the ANCWL, he changed his 'spots', and danced, and sang praise to Zuma. The delegates united in singing Zuma’s signature song, “Umshini wami”. It is a wonder that they never changed the words to "Umshini wami - my enemies want to remove me from power"

Sing and dance less and start doing for a change what we are paying you for: WORK! Get this country out of the shambles you governed it in by your corrupt, lazy ways of doing things. Sies man, I am ashamed to be a South African! The world outside (yes, their is actually a big wide world outside of Africa!)has the right idea about you governing people: a bunch of singing, dancing and spear rendering thugs in control of a banana republic....

Mashatile is an opportunist,we cannot trust such leaders. He is just thinking about his own pocket. Can the true leaders/cadres of ANC arise. Our organisation is collapsing.History will be harsh on us.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-29 08:39

Any evidence to back your allegations against Mashatile? I knew it, you don't have any!!

      smalefane - 2012-09-29 11:31

@Themba, visit the ANC branches in Gauteng especially Alexander his stronghold. Make friends with his comrades and you would know how corrupt Mashatile is. I agree with keithroland, the man is an opportunist.

  • siphom.mnguni - 2012-09-29 13:18

Since others want Zuma to serve the second term while others don't, why they don't solve that in fist fight, chair fights, like in that televise fight in Parliament. What is that country anyway? Was it Korea or Taiwan? Please, remind me!!!

  • man.gap.5 - 2012-09-29 17:00

Last time I remember the person who was singing songs against a rape victim during Zumas trial was a lady, the people who mistreat their domestic workers are mostly women, the reason why we have isithembu which is one of the most divided and painfull forms of marriages one can choose...ITS BECAUSE SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN LIKE IT.. Women choose to be second best and accuse males for being promiscuos...Its also females who choose to date married men and become pregnant. We are set back by these women who are making Lillian Ngoyis struggle to be invain...It is because of ANC womens league leader that the children of Limpopo suffered late deliveries of books. I am an African man brought up by responsible women and definately those in the womens league are not.Dlala ngabo mshini ngabakho, I know you like this tell them you still need their daughters so they must vote for you.

  • rink.hals.1 - 2012-09-29 18:13

It doesn't matter who they vote for in the ANC. All they vote for is support of corruption, racism, polygamy, and bigotry.

      tkphore - 2012-09-30 18:32

ANC woman's league is full of woman's who has no integrity they don't care about the future of the South African's their inlove with money they are looking for deployment in high positions so they can feet their children's and family's. You can only see them toy toying out side courts against rapists but we never see them toy toying against Zuma's rape charges. I wonder there's anyone of them who's involve in a polygamy marriage * crap ANC woman's league *
