Mazibuko incident: DA lays charge

2012-04-16 21:28

Johannesburg - Criminal charges have been laid against a Sadtu official accused of trying to run over DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko with a car, the party's Eastern Cape office said on Monday.

"Charges of reckless driving and intent to do grievous bodily harm were laid against the chairperson of Sadtu’s [SA Democratic Teachers' Union] Hewu branch, Honjiswa Mrwebi," Democratic Alliance provincial chair Edmund van Vuuren said in a statement.

Warrant Officer Alwin Labans confirmed that charges had been laid at the Humewood police station in Port Elizabeth.

"There was a case of reckless and negligent driving as well as attempted murder opened by Edmund van Vuuren. The case will now be transferred to Queenstown, where the crime happened," he said.

Labans said no arrests had been made.

Van Vuuren accused Mrwebi of trying to run over Mazibuko in Whittlesea, outside Queenstown, during a 12km walk on Friday to highlight problems with scholar transport in the area. Mazibuko was accompanied by school children and Van Vuuren.

The DA has asked Eastern Cape education department superintendent general Modidima Mannya to investigate. Van Vuuren said Mannya had accepted the party's request. He said he had also contacted Education MEC Mandla Makupula.

"Sadtu's reaction to Miss Mazibuko’s solidarity walk is a symptom of the union’s aggressive attitude to people with genuine concerns about the impact that difficulties like transport and strikes have on learners. This incident is unacceptable and the DA expects the MEC to take action," said Van Vuuren.

On Saturday, the Dispatch Online reported that Mrwebi had admitted she had wanted to hit Mazibuko with her car. She reportedly accused Mazibuko of "wasting" the children’s time.

Mazibuko called the incident a "non-event" by a "rogue teacher".

"It was a non-event. When we were walking on the road the occasional car would pass by and I remember one almost hitting me, but I was not aware of some evil plot," said Mazibuko.

"I didn't realise who was behind the wheel. I wasn't aware of a plot to harm me. We were not trying to engage this rogue teacher who was trying to create some sort of a ruckus... I don't really care either way," she said.

If someone had tried to run over JuJu I don't think for one second that he would have been as gracious about it. Lindiwe is nothing but a lady!

      Squeegee - 2012-04-16 21:57

Where does the ANC get these people? She belongs in prison.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-16 22:48

And so do the rest of them. Well said!

      NrGx - 2012-04-17 07:58

so by your "logic", it is ok to try run people over with their car...? where do you live? bet you wouldn't spew your racism if she tried to run YOU over!

      Lorain - 2012-04-17 09:39

@ kolobe stop acting out your name,it's a criminal offense to run people over even if you dont like the person. True story.

      Kala - 2012-04-17 10:01

      Kolobe is a white troll

  • Wim - 2012-04-16 21:56

Was this person driving a Hummer? Otherwise it could just be a suicide attempt.

      Kolobe - 2012-04-16 22:37

and they should get koekemoer as the driver

      Lerato - 2012-04-17 10:32

@Wim – lol, haibo! This whole thing doesn’t make sense one is going for attempted murder charges but Mazibuko herself is saying it’s a non-event. If this was a real case with the way Mazibuko and crew are going on about crime in SA then it’s an EVENT!! The DA is always crying over crime statistics and its people like Mazibuko who are making it worse by calling attempted murder a non-event. It will be interesting though to follow this case, I already know the outcome and so does Mazibuko. On another note they say it was a 12km walk, did she actually finish the whole march? If so I would be interested in seing the before and after pictures, it will make a good DA Election Campaign Poster which will read like this - “ Vote DA, In Just 12km and a few attempts on your life you change from this to that !!!!!!

ANC has resorted to using automobile as a weapon to crash opponents.

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 23:54

is there anywhere it says the woman is ANC?

      NrGx - 2012-04-17 08:01

      Siya... simple deduction!

      Ricky - 2012-04-17 08:08

Siyadyosiba. sadtu member = anc. Too busy striking or in meetings too do their jobs of educating, not that these affirmative action teachers are any good at it. anc goverment too busy commiting crimes too do their job of governing, not that these affirmative action politicians are any good at it.

      Lerato - 2012-04-17 10:39

@Ricky your deduction lacks merit, its like saying all white guys are DA! Some are AWB, some ANC

  • Sam - 2012-04-16 22:07

is the DA still a political party or group of audience in the courts of law

      Ronald - 2012-04-16 22:26

So according to your thought pattern, it is OK to try and run over a political opponent that is trying to place herself in the shoes of the people she is trying to help. She should be happy she was not injured, but when Zille comments on the " education refugees", a huge stink is made of her being racist. This smacks of hypocrisy from the ANC and its supporters. The same pattern is prevalent throughout the whole of the political scene in SA, one set of rules that allows the ANC to do, say, steal what they want without any comebacks, and the rules that apply to "other" people.

      Melania - 2012-04-16 23:17

Read some more on court cases. Notice the huge number of anc people recently in court... Maybe they are the audience. O wait, they are the accused most of the time... Makes you think... And tell me, when laSt did the anc take anyone to court to force them better the lives of the people of this beautiful country? Give credit where credit is due.

  • Assis - 2012-04-16 22:09

The sad part is that many teachers and a vrot education system in EC continue to drive over childrens chances of improving their lives and equipping them with more skills to succeed every single day.

  • shelley.nott - 2012-04-16 22:18

"trying to run over Mazibuko... Mazibuko was accompanied by school children" - bwahaha. That is just wrong on so many levels. Oh my hat talk about an evil-ass person.

  • EricksonTL - 2012-04-16 22:26

Disgusting. Fire the lot of them! Isn't it time we gave Ms. Mazibuko some of fat boy's security contingent? Surely that little worm could do without all those guards.

      EricksonTL - 2012-04-16 22:27

By the way: go Lindiwe! You are a rock star! Don't let the bottom feeders get to you!

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-04-16 22:46

Lindiwe - hats off to you for handling this like the lady you are!! Perhaps the prez could take a leaf out of your book - re the also "non event" last year when he was "assaulted" by a man who accidentally spilt a drink near him, which did not even wet him ... An R8000 fine??? Maybe that's for the lobola eh?

  • thulanit3 - 2012-04-16 23:00

Court battles: DA vs NPA, DA vs Malema, DA vs the States,,DA vs Sadtu,,,DA vs this minister,,, DA vs dat department,,, what a joke,,,waste so much money with all th ups and downs,,,! All they know is point fingers and take somebody to court,,,! I gues dat what they discuss whenever they meet,,who to take to court,,,!

      AnthonyZA - 2012-04-16 23:08

DA.....standing up against criminals who think they can get away with anything, I don't know about you, but I am not happy about people getting away with crime.

      Melania - 2012-04-16 23:08

This person who was malicious should be prosecuted. Its just the law. You would also try to protect yourself in a similar situation. Whoever tried to run you over. Unfortunately this one has a political flavour, but its still wrong. About the other cases. If you go and read some more about all that they do, they are trying to help. And they want to help all south africans and for a more properous country for all who live in it. Not just their members. Like the anc does....

      NrGx - 2012-04-17 08:02

...."waste so much money"... about the BILLIONS of tax payers money that the ANC have wasted or has simply "dissappeared"?

      Lorain - 2012-04-17 09:49

@ thulanit this time I have to agrre with the DA taking someone to court and I hope the culprit gets jail time. You want to behave like a criminal you should get treated as such. Trying to run over someone with your car is a criminal offense, how come some people on this forum dont get that?

  • - 2012-04-16 23:48

Man a guy spills a drink on Zuma by accident and his whole life is turned upside down, he was charged with assault and fined to prove a point. Now what? this country is going to the wolves or no they already got it.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-17 10:00

The drunk didn't even wet him

  • siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 23:58

Unacceptable conduct indeed, if she is guilty sentence her if not, she must sue the DA for defamation of character and harassment.

      Sharon - 2012-04-17 00:17

"Mrwebi had admitted she had wanted to hit Mazibuko with her car" @ Siya - I copied and pasted the above from the article. I don't think she will be suing anyone anytime soon.

  • Junebugg - 2012-04-17 09:50

I dont believe it, who would want to put their lives at danger by Running over Lindiwe?? Unless he was driving a truck..You run over lindiwe, her big @ss will total your car and possibly kill you in the process
