Mkhize: Zuma a father figure

2012-10-09 22:41

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma continues to play a leadership role as a father figure, ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Zweli Mkhize said on Tuesday.

"The support that was generated by popularity of the president at national level has had a more or less similar impact across all provinces, due to his widespread appeal across different communities," he said in a statement.

"The assertion that the last surge in voter support was as a result of President Zuma hailing from KwaZulu-Natal is not entirely accurate."

KwaZulu-Natal is Zuma's home province and the African National Congress's biggest in terms of membership.

Earlier this month, the party announced that the membership in the province had grown by 90 000 between January and September.

Mkhize said the growth in KwaZulu-Natal had been a steady process and reflected the stability in the province.

In 1942, the ANC decided to achieve a target of one million members during its centenary year.

"During the centenary celebrations President Zuma announced that this target had been reached," said Mkhize.

"Coming from a province that hosts 21% of the population of the country, clearly a higher contribution was expected."

Currently the ANC had 1.2 million members of which 331 000 were from KwaZulu-Natal, he said.

"It seems our sin of being the home province of the incumbent president [means] we are attracting the most adverse of commentaries."

Mkhize bemoaned those who attached tribal connotations to discredit the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and the work it had done.

He said the province had learnt some lessons since the ANC's last national elective conference in Polokwane in 2007.

To achieve unity in the provinces, there needed to be strong unity at national level.

"Similarly, KwaZulu-Natal learnt that the trauma of unmanaged contest involving the topmost leadership may result in trauma within all levels in the party, with significant repercussions in the support base and society in general," said Mkhize.

"This means that there is no one in KwaZulu-Natal who has the appetite... [for] another Polokwane-type battle in Mangaung.

"There must be no blood on the floor and the integrity of the ANC must be preserved," he said.

However, Mkhize said the situation at the Polokwane conference was different to what it was today.

He said the current leadership would be assessed.

"No leadership collective can preside over a term of office that will not attract both successes and failures, or praise and criticism with equal measure.

"It must count for something that the ANC has registered growth to reach the one million member mark as a sign of successful leadership," said Mkhize.

The fact that there was a better relationship between the ANC and its alliance partners -- the SA Communist Party and the Congress of SA Trade Unions -- despite huge challenges, was credit to the leadership elected in 2007, he said.

"Zuma a father figure"...with all his kids that's a serious understatement

      John - 2012-10-09 23:26

Zuma: who's your daddy!!,!,!! Mkihise: YOU ARE!!! And his, and his, and his, and that one's daddy too, not sure about that on (he's too white..), and his... :)

      gestoffle.vaneerdenvark - 2012-10-10 01:23

"Earlier this month, the party announced that the membership in the province had grown by 90 000 between January and September." Ya right, They forgot to mention through intimidation and threats to the 90000 new member's families. I draw similarities with the strikes on at the moment. "Father figure" does mean : along the lines of, the epitome of an honourable life, right? Clearly i am wrong.....First thing i am going to do in the morning is phone the oxford dictionary to change that and tell them that must now have this meaning : father figure - a person who rapes, steals and is corrupt. But never is convicted because he is the president. Also blows millions on a house while his voters starve. friggin slimy fruits, the whole brigade. There are too many.

      gestoffle.vaneerdenvark - 2012-10-10 01:32

zoo-mer, our father figure, is about as straight as a seven rand note.....

      juicecard.tshaka - 2012-10-10 02:18

We don`t need a father figure, we need a president to run the country you dimwit

      max.reynecke - 2012-10-10 05:26

Why are Africans happy with so very little? Zuma is the worst president even Africa has produced and they see him as a father figure....get some self respect and expect a bit more from your role models, I mean really...seeing Zuma as a father figure is pathetic.

      bibi.vanzyl - 2012-10-10 06:41

@max: you have hit the nail on the head there. I have lived in various African countries, ex-colonies and otherwise and the voters are so complacent and resigned to their plight. The poorest of the poor are still poor 50 years on, but come next election they will vote for the money grabbing, no-good politicians again. If it was not for foreign aid and NGO's (oh and Africa does not like either as it represents the wicked West) half of the population would have been wiped of the face of Africa.

      alan.gernet - 2012-10-10 07:49

Zoomer Zurg _ I am your Father!

      mholthuysen - 2012-10-10 08:34

A father that steals, is corrupt, lies, sleeps with is friends daughters and has no clue for life and does not care for anyone else... hell yes he is really setting examples.

Sometimes a person's user name says it. You sir are nothing but a silly old and white troll that still dreams of apartheid, who the hell think you are. More like a mass poker!

      larissa.goosen - 2012-10-10 09:50

I wonder, if Zuma remember the names of his own children)))

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-10-10 10:32

the thing is - in my country (Romania) we had a dictator. His name was Nicolae Ceausescu. In our revolution he was eventually executed after a short trial. The thing that Nicolae and Zuma has in common? They both liked to be called the Father Figure, or the Father of the nation! It is a true indication when someone has dictatorial tendencies. As about the fact that other speak on his behalf in this manner - well we'll throw that to plain state-sponsored propaganda! Just look at the Himler and the likes!

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-10-10 19:42

Just by saying that, Mkhize has positioned himself for a senior position in the ANC and government.

  • sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-10-09 23:01

He certainly teaches his children well - look at his son Edward, who just had his assets seized because of wedding debt. Well done, Jacob. You set such a shining example!

      roi.boss1 - 2012-10-10 08:42

Well its so amazing that you actually think you better than Zuma. I must say for a grade 5 as you put it he did well for himself. For starters he is president and what are you. You know him but he doesn't know you. He is richer and more powerful than your whole family shall ever be. Silly Troll

A father figure cares for and loves all his people equally, without favouring one above the other, and strives for peace and unity in his household ( Nation)He is kind and understanding and is prepared to sacrifice his own life in achieving these goals. Non of this do I see in Zuma

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-10-09 23:25

There is something not right here; to quote, "they wanted 1 million members?"Now if there are 45 million folks in this SA......are non ANC doing the voting? Please explain.......I am losing the plot. Other than that aspect, during the build up to the last voting, there were people going around the district, showing pictures of Zuma to the locals, and telling them to put their cross in the square etc..... Now I know I have lost the plot.

      magoro.mags - 2012-10-09 23:36

Father figure teaching his anc kidz how to steal millions...

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-09 23:39

The ANC lies so much, do they really think anybody believes this claim of such an enormous growth in the Zulu-ANC... even if it was true does it mean that Zuma is now the New King Of The Zulu's what are they actually trying to tell the rest of the ANC provinces.....that they are superior?

      sphelele.genqese - 2012-10-10 00:10

Are u trying to say KZN does not have a right to grow since the pres is from there?

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-10 00:52

No Sphelele I am saying that the ANC lies so much that even if they were telling the truth, I can't believe them, and if they were in actual fact telling the truth in this case, does KZN suffer from a superiority complex, now that they may, or may not have more members. Or are they expecting to have special treatment, for their numbers? What is the story? Have they managed to give out more food parcels, or what? Or is this a .....'we have a secret'....moment?

  • stanton.clarke - 2012-10-09 23:55

Does no one in the ANC have the balls to admit in public that their leadership is an absolute disgrace to this country. C'mom, there can't be that many stupid people in this party.

      gestoffle.vaneerdenvark - 2012-10-10 01:30

@stan - never will happen, its another bob mugabe situation - which means they have to stay in power, because if they lose, they will face corruption charges. Then again, I talk BS, because The father figure is as straight as a R7 note.

  • sally.lewitt - 2012-10-10 00:01

'There must be no blood on the floor and the integrity of the ANC must be preserved' NOW Mkhize, who the heck are you trying to kid? That's the 2nd biggest LIE out of your mouth, the 1st one claiming Zooma a 'father figure' NOW where is the integrity? Integrity of a bafoon perhaps?

well, yes, he is indeed a faaher figure to aapercentage of South Africans, registered or not. As for his status as a rolemodel, that's matter that requires some discussion. As for his popularity across SA, I think Mr Mkhize should wake up and read the news papers, not base his opinion on how much private wealth the spear has allowed him to accrue .

Oh that was a stupid question - of course it is. What is is about him that they fall over themselves backwards to please, give more & more to. Am i just missing something here. As far as i am concerned all these upgrades to Nkandla seems as though they are getting ready for "A President For Life" or in more simpler terms a dictator.

There is a lot of Zulu people who had brains to think, for one, the painter Ayanda Mabula, is an Zulu and he describe in an precise way the Zulu view of father, in his newest painting of Zuma that is kept out of public he explains clearly why Zuma is an failure. Zuma is not so popular as what he thinks in kzn, here is far more zulu's than 90 000, her used to be 5million.

  • Grizzlybear - 2012-10-10 07:31

I don't mean offence but really these "Zulus" are narrow minded and tribalistic ... It makes little sense that the Minister of Justice, Mr Radebe would take a bullet for Zuma hence silencing all his moral judgement and ethics, if this is not fanaticism... what is it then..!??! Your former colleague/employee Simelane being found "unfit" for the very post your mentor Zuma put him... doesn't it ring a bell and show you the danger signs...!??! Can you use your brain as Minister of Justice in a supposedly constitutional democracy, hell no!!! It equally goes on with this Mr Mkhize calling Zuma " a father figure... really !?!?!"... what is the quality and the standards of their judgement??? Zuma fired poor Sibusiso Ndebele over the SANRAL (e-tolling)scandal... and could still keep this useless woman of basic education because her husband happens to be the chief whip of the ANC... really...!?!?! Zulus, you have gone far below... open up... the World is bigger than your tribalistic and atomistic view of it... Wake up...!!! The World knows your tribe as a tribe of bully-cruel-brutal people... the onslaught going on between IFP and ANC cadres is sufficient proof... Take it upon yourself to restore your people's reputation and identity, as you have equally been known as great worshipers (the likes of Shembe) and great warriors (the likes of Shaka Zulu)...
