#AskMmusi Maimane who his new chief of staff is, and he will tell you it is a man who left the Democratic Alliance just over four months ago.

Former DA chief executive Jonathan Moakes was this week appointed as chief of staff to newly elected DA leader Mmusi Maimane, who is also the party’s parliamentary leader.

Although Moakes’s appointment has not yet been publicly announced, an internal party memo has been circulated to inform party insiders, and Moakes has confirmed it to City Press by text message.

Moakes said he was appointed in a party role, which means that Maimane’s chief of staff in Parliament, André Coetzee, remained in his position.

Moakes resigned as DA chief executive last year because he said he wanted to spend more time with his young family.

He also intended to pursue a career in the private sector.

It is unclear what persuaded him to come back to a full-time position in the party, but one of Moakes’s strengths is known to be political strategy – something that party insiders said Maimane’s team was weak on.

As DA chief executive, Moakes was head of the professional staff – including the financial, research and support staff – who are entrusted with the day-to-day running of the party.

This experience should serve him well in his new position.
