Johannesburg - The organised taxi industry would play a large part in the success of the FIFA World Cup, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said on Tuesday.

Taxis would be relied on to transport fans between airports to match venues, accommodation nodes, transport hubs and Fan Fests, Ndebele said addressing the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) national conference at Sun City.

Taxis would also be used to transport commuters from railway stations, park and ride sites, tourist attractions and shopping nodes.

Ndebele said the history of the taxi industry was unparalleled in terms of black economic empowerment.

"It is a story of how black people, cast aside by the apartheid regime, turned into the most powerful transporter of commuters in South Africa."

Ndebele again condemned attacks on the Johannesburg Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Soweto and Johannesburg, the latest of which resulted in the death of a passenger.

"Government cannot stand idle when criminal elements threaten stability in our country by killing innocent people going about their business," he said.

"If we allowed lawlessness to creep into our system, we would be allowing a descent into chaos."
