Johannesburg - The KwaZulu-Natal legislature will elect a new premier this week, the provincial legislature said on Wednesday.

He is expected to be sworn in on Thursday; more than a month after former premier Zweli Mkhize announced his resignation on 23 August to take up his duties as full-time ANC treasurer general.

The province's Education MEC Senzo Mchunu has been acting premier since.

While the ANC was silent on who would succeed Mkhize, media in KwaZulu-Natal speculated it would be either Senzo or Willies Mchunu, the ANC's deputy chairperson in the province.

Senzo narrowly defeated Willies earlier this year to become chairman of the party in the province.

The decision on who the ANC nominated to become its preferred candidate for premier in the province did not rest with provincial, but with national party structures.

Senzo Mkhize, the party's provincial spokesperson, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Spokesperson for the premier's office, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said he had no idea who his new boss would be.

After the election in the legislature, the new premier would be sworn in and make his inaugural speech.

The ANC has a majority in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
