Nkandla visit not a publicity stunt - Zille

2012-11-05 08:23

Johannesburg - It was "unfortunate" to describe the DA's visit to President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead as a publicity stunt, leader Helen Zille said on Monday morning.

According to an SABC news report, presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj accused her of seeking publicity by giving an ultimatum to Zuma to provide details of his upgrades at Nkandla by Wednesday.

"I think stunt is a very unfortunate word to use," said Zille, in response to a question from SAfm.

"Because what it [the visit] did achieve is, now everyone is aware that hundreds of millions of rands of public money is being spent on a private home outside of the law and that the president... [is] refusing to answer questions," said Zille.

Proper channels

But Maharaj said the Democratic Alliance leader needed to follow proper channels if she wanted answers.

"She knows very well that if she wants to serve an ultimatum or communicate with the president in any way there are proper channels for her to do so. So when she chooses to go to the media, it seems to me... that she's just looking for publicity."

Zille led a DA delegation to Zuma's Nkandla residence in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, but was stopped by several hundred African National Congress supporters.

Police refused permission for Zille to proceed along the road to the residence, citing safety reasons.

The crowd, which eventually numbered between 800 and 1 000 supporters, blocked the road to the residence.

One man was arrested and was expected to appear in court in Nkandla on Monday after firing a shot in the air before Zille's arrival.

Yes very interesting "Tienie Mac "correctly identified Nkandla as South Africa's latest black hole where money and good governance just disappears into the nowhere.

      frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-11-05 09:04

We all had the misfortune to see what it takes to be an ANC supporter. Apparently you have to dress in fatigues and slither around on your stomach in full view of international News crews. This really must have went well with the audiences around the world viewing SA in a less than favourable light these days! So if this is Zoomers support base, willing to demean themselves on the global stage, what can be said of the idiot holding the strings?

      leaproach.thekeeper - 2012-11-05 09:43

@gieljam…spelonk vir grotbewoners en ondergrondse gate vir die rot.

      claudia.meads - 2012-11-05 11:37

gieljam.gomtor, Indeed - and the other 'black hole' sits in the seat of the president of SA. You have to ask yourself how naive it must have been to think they can govern a country, govern themselves for that matter - bar Botswana ("a footstool of the West" according to the Woodwork dingbat), this has played itself out all over Africa...

      angela.salloway - 2012-11-05 09:17

Just which "Z" are you talking about? Zille is trying hard to get Zuma to answer questions which he and his cronie, Mac are doing their best not to do. Just a pity she is a white woman, because I think if she was of colour and a man she would be taken much more seriously by the greater population of SA.

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-11-05 09:21

Gift ,one way will be to stop at "Y" but then you wont get full marks.

  • sakhile.gamede - 2012-11-05 08:29

bet this is going to be about race and the incompetency of Zulu's...if thats the case, leave to where everything is about u...and one thing that must be noted here is that people who vote, most of them dont have excess to the cry on N24,waisting cyber space...Zuma's day is going to come and he will be voted out, until that day

      christopher.shining - 2012-11-05 08:33

Exactly the mentality that zuma has. You do not give a rats a** about your felloe humans you wanker!

      ashley.stroebel - 2012-11-05 08:42

Hey just because Zuma is a Zulu doesnt mean all other Zulus are incompetent!! Theres alot of Blind followers...but i would have to say not all of them are Zulus. But we need him out. When he is out?? What then does he keep our ( beacause we payd for it ) fortress? or can i go stay over some time?? LOL

      Martin - 2012-11-05 09:39

It would be highly desirable if sakhile.gamede shut his mouth and gave his a**e a chance, the chance it so richly deserves!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 09:48

Since when are the Zulu people saints, without fault? And besides, stop making assumptions Sakhile. Just because a few Zulu's are f**ked up and stupid, doesn't mean all are. It is not the fact that they are Zulu that causes this, but that the ANC anc Zumba/Goodsh*t Zweletini don't give a rats-a$$ about the people.

  • steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-11-05 08:30

Well done Helen. It's about time the ignorant masses became aware of just how much Zipper is stealing from them. 230 odd million could provide shelter and food for many poor people. Shame on you Zoooommmmer, you big fraud.

  • arm.witmens - 2012-11-05 08:32

"According to an SABC news report" - SABC = Anc muppets. Who cares what old sellout maharaj says? This country is a bloody joke. That includes the president and his entire troop.

  • Willie - 2012-11-05 08:38

Any national key point needs to inspected by any political party 'cause tax payers money is been used. finish and klaar

  • frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-11-05 08:38

The problem doesn't lie with Zille as she is merely exercising her right to inquire about the squandering of public money. The problem is primary with this fool we have instilled as president that has the inclination of a of a budding dictator with scant regard for rules and regulations. If he has the gall to use public funds to build himself a fortress for his bevy of wives and endless supply of snot-nosed kids in full public view, how much is he doing under the cover of darkness and deceit? The mind boggles!

  • Sandile Bhoma Ka Nduli - 2012-11-05 08:40

I am a staunch supporter and a member of the ANC and what actually happened I believe it was a total blunder coz what happens here goes beyond the boarders, in saying that the picture that was portrayed caused ANC and the country a big disaster. I believe in transparency which everyone else should. The big question will be 'what is it that is so secretive about these upgrades that DA must not know coz it happened to former president though it was not publicised.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 09:52

Mandela spent something like R10 million, on upgrades for SECURITY. That is fine. But spending R240 million on a bunker, bulletproof elevator and other luxuries is just f**king pathetic.

      jenny.nel.92 - 2012-11-06 20:00

Think. Stop for just a minute and think how much two hundred MILLION rand is. Think about the e-toll fiasco which your ANC is trying to make us pay for, think about the school children who sat this entire year without school books, about the pitiful child grants that do nothing more than ensure that more ignorant, poor and uneducated children are bred to vote for the ANC. Is this ok with you? Well, it certainly is not ok with me. It is also not ok with me that your president calls out the police and bus loads of armed thugs to threaten and intimidate a small white woman when she is merely exercising her democratic right. It is also not ok the he looked the other way when unarmed miners were mown down when they were neither dangerous nor threatening. This country is in a terrible mess and we need to get the ANC out. The DA certainly achieved their objective at Zuma's vulgar mansion, and it was pretty comical that the ANC had to get their drones to lie down in the road to stop the march. Who looked foolish? Not the DA, that's for sure.

  • wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 08:41

When the story first emerged, they said it is not a private residence. Now suddenly it is. How the F**K do they think they have the right to use tax payers money to use on Zumba's private residence? The people are seeing the bullsh*t flying everywhere. That is why this tiny-cocked moron needs to build a bunker, he knows the people are seeing all this bull and are getting fed up. I cannot believe their arrogance. And to threaten Zille too.

  • lorain.maseko - 2012-11-05 08:43

ofcourse its a publicity stunt on the part of the DA

      frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-11-05 08:55

And this coming from another of the brain dead ANC clan member that is perfectly OK with the fact that Showerhead is stealing our funds for his own pleasure! How stupid can you be? Were you one of the cretins slithering on their stomachs in the road, in full view of the TV news camera's? How idiotic do you have to be to represent the ANC??

      richard.hipkin - 2012-11-05 09:06

No lorain, 1/4 of a BILLION rand is being spent on his PRIVATE home.. YOUR and MY money. The DA did well to expose this "I am chief" mentality of this Zulu.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-05 09:19

@ Frank i understand that in your supremist mentality anyone who disagrees with you is a cretin, i'm okay with that,it was still a very childish publicity stunt.if they were serious about stopping inkandlaville, like taking the matter to court.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-05 09:36

@ PointBlank- The DA did well to expose? They exposed nothinmg we didnt already know,if they really want this madness to stop they need to stop with the publicity stunts and take real action, maybe legal? Did they think they were just gonna go there and single-handedly shut down all operatons? Come on.

      BoyvandieSuburbs - 2012-11-05 09:49

It would have been a publicity stunt if the DA was manufacturing an issue where there wasn't really one. Thus, no publicity stunt. The DA also gave Zuma 72 hours to explain how these expenditures are justified, if he fails, they are taking him to court. The ANC's reaction made this a major event, if they had let the DA visit Nkandla freely, it would have been much less of an event.

      frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-11-05 09:49

@ lorain. Don't you feel just a little bit stupid for calling me a white supremacist in full view of Zoomer stealing like a professional? This is the problem with you lot of black Zoomer apologists! You would rather let everything go to the dogs than to stand up and do the right thing as even you should be able to see through your ANC coloured glasses that what is happening here is just not right. So really, get a life and some much needed reality in your life before bestowing stupid names on people lifting out this travesty perpetrated by your useless "leeda"!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-11-05 09:53

No Lorain, I repeat, the DA exposed the ANC for what they are. A barbaric, uncouth bunch of intolerants. Barring someone from traveling alone a PUBLIC road. Creating "no-go areas" that was apparently done away with after apartheid but recreated under Zuma. If you cannot see this dictatorship behaviour, you more blind than we feared.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 10:01

And? Maybe it was done to use the media, so that this fat c*nts extravagance and utter disregard can be shown to the people....? Or maybe it is better that all the ills of the ANC be allowed to be hidden.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 10:03

Hmmm sorry to say lorain, you have Malema's mentality, if you are going to say things like, " i understand that in your supremist mentality..." Must this argument always be used? Could it not just be his opinion, must it be his supremist opinion?

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-05 10:27

@ Frank -No no at all i dont feel stupid, You always maintain that anybody who disagrees with you on anything is stupid, thats fine, regardless of what you call me it wont change the fact that, the march to Inkandla did absolutely nothing to change the situation, unlike if the DA had followed the proper channels.

During the apartheid, she risked her freedom by opposing the apartheid regime.... and now she is willing to risk her life against misinformed Zuma loyalists. carol.brand.5030 - 2012-11-05 16:15

secret? The ANC has been unable to transform itself from a liberation movement to a 'government'. Their ideology is outdated and outlandish. A stunt is an act that gets committed with little or no effectual results. As i've previously stated, there could have been other effectual ways of getting the message across.

@Phakama: The uproar about Nkandla nothing to do with race. If it was a 'white' president who did what Zuma is doing now, the public's reaction would have been the same. Zille no doubt lives in ONE house. The problem most people have with Nklanda is that Zuma is turning it into a village. A South African newspaper has proof that a contractor submitted an account to the Government, which was paid, for building 31 - yes THIRTY ONE buildings at Nklanda! Aparently for his many wives, family members and visitors, then there is the underground bunker, elevator, soccer field .. the list is endless. No way can this be compared to Zille's one dwelling!!!!!

It was definitely a publicity stunt. Zille says she meant to make the public aware of the wasteful expenditure. Really, this issue was in the news two months ago. Why didn’t she enlist the help of public protector and law enforcement agencies if there is any wrong doing? She is disrespectful of the Nkandla boy. How dare does she go to msholozi’s private home without being invited. She always bring a couple of black idiots with when she does something stupid.

  • Eterni80 - 2012-11-05 09:22

I wonder how many of the so called ANC/JZ supporters were legit. I wouldn't put it past the cANCer to bus in people to keep the DA away from king penises palace - aint that a mouth full ! if you have nothing to hide - you have nothing to fear, and we all know how many skeletons JZ has hidden in his past..

  • sean.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-05 09:23

The various political comments against Zille rather than standing for honesty and integrity aligns those people along side mother corruption. Out of the entire country it took a woman to take a stand against this blatant act of corruption and misappropriation of funds. Whats wrong with Cosatu and the PAC? If you guys are so against corruption what are you doing about it? Your silence along with the rest of the ANC is only showing you weekness and that you condone this ridiculous abuse of taxpayers money. Rather take your meaningless chirps against Zille and turn it into something constructive that shows the people of this country that you don't support this type of behavior and you are serious about protecting the integrity of our constitution and the lives of the people in this country!

  • luke.dekoker - 2012-11-05 09:24

But maharaj, any way if Zille followed the proper channels and handed an ultimatum or communication to zuma (via you I presume) NO ONE will answer; so by her "just looking for publicity" the whole world now knows about the absolute waste of taxpayers' money and we all hope that the public protector will open this can of worms before the CancER meeting in Bloemfontein.

  • Karabo Phetoane - 2012-11-05 09:26

@Robin I'm educated and informed and I won't vote a white person to the highest office in the country even if it can be your Zille or whoever. My vote is black and it will remain black and my vote is anti-DA

      travis.young.58555941 - 2012-11-05 09:54

Well you you not really educated & informed little boy.

      chule.qalase - 2012-11-05 10:04

It seems as though you are owed money buy the schools you attended, as you sound more illiterate than your president. I wonder whether you'd sat the same if you were an American?

      martin.brink.965 - 2012-11-05 10:19

Voting ACDP, like most who care about our country then? Good for you!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 11:20

Well Karabo, that is just f**king stupid. Your vote shouldn't be based on race. It should be based on who would do the best job. And won't steal billions, and won't use public funds to build a "private residence." This country is doomed if there are morons like you out there that vote based on skin colour. Get it into you head.... APARTHEID WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN AGAIN. Stop allowing fear from 20 years ago to cloud your judgement.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 11:21

ACDP? Oh hell no. Those religious nuts will cause us to lose many of the rights we have today.

      carol.brand.5030 - 2012-11-05 16:22

Well Karabo. you vote Black if it makes you feel better. but you sound pretty stupid dude! so bad Black is better than good white, intelligent white, white who can get our country moving? White which forms the MAJORITY OF THE taxpayers in this country? what a putz you are! you sound like a sheeple.

  • gregory.hill.984 - 2012-11-05 09:32

Look at the photo zille walking arm in arm with black white coloured indian, dont see many photos of ANC doing the same thing, just a casual observation. The days of apartheid are over, not one white in South Africa would like to see those days come back. ANC is reverse apartheid, and if you cant see that, then you are blind

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-05 09:43

      Window dressing

      robert.simachaina - 2012-11-05 10:17

But they are many who still dream it will come back one day

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 11:22

Oh so it was window dressing when they whites voted against apartheid in the referendum?

      mike.bundy.73 - 2012-11-05 14:20

@lorain.meseko: The ignorance of people like you is a constant source of amazement to me. Do some research on on Zille and check her anti-apartheid credentials before you continue to make such a fool of yourself. Then do some more research to see what happened to the apartheid-loving National Party after 1994 - THEY WERE ABSORBED INTO THE ANC. What this country needs more than anything else is BETTER EDUCATION for ignorant and uninformed people such as you.

  • patrick.m.ellis.7 - 2012-11-05 09:32

Why, oh why, is everything in this great country of ours reduced to racial intolerance? Will we never move on and learn to see beyond the colour of each others' skins? When someone as prominent as your president does something out of line, why does it have to be about his race? If Zille was guilty of looting taxpayers money I would be equally angered and condemn her even though I'm white. Let all decent South Africans, black & white unite. We have so much positive potential and should cash in on it.

      xolanit.ntuli.9 - 2012-11-05 18:55

That is a good comment Patrick, but unfortunately by the look of things we are very much divided when it comes to SA politic, reason being that we don't trust one another period. As much as I'm of the same opinion with people who are against the government financing of Zuma's homestead with that staggering amount and himself having allowed that to happen, its tantamount to theft. However some comments leave much to be desired. Black, white and tribal issues still separate us big time. Maybe after our generation this country will prosper from nations living together in harmony with no name calling, provided we teach our kids racial tolerance and that we are all humans in our diversity and that nobody is better the other.

  • chule.qalase - 2012-11-05 10:15

I salute DA for actually standing up for what is wrong instead of whining like other politicians and other people do. Whether she got in at Nkandla of not, the whole world knows now about Zumas compound. Wherever he goes now, people will ask him how can he build himself a castle while the country and it's citizens are suffering??

  • Martha1234 - 2012-11-05 10:15

It is shameful that people can defend the stealing of so much money because they are blinded by anger towards a certain race, and it is just as shameful that people on this site name call and insult people because of their political affiliation or race. The only way we as a nation are to thrive is to look at each other as people, equal in all regards! Lets demand transparency from our government, demand that the money we pay them is used to enhance the lives of all South Africans, demand they remember, we are their bosses, not the other way round. I don't care which party rules this country, I just want whoever it is to do it right! Lets not go to war with each other, but wage war on our government until they do right by ALL OF US!

  • theo.joubert.37 - 2012-11-05 10:36

The ANC does not reply when proper channels are followed. Good example would be the transcripts that us supposed to be handed over in accordance with a court order. They do not even adhere to court orders!!! Why would they hand over this information, when it is clear that they do not even comply with a court order. The ANC government does not respect the rule of law and they do not comply with the constitution. They believe themselves to be untouchable and only follow procedure when it is in their own personal interest. At least Hellen Zille is making the general public aware of the current mismanagement of the Tax payers money. Thank you Hellen Zille, you give us hope for the future of our country. I sincerely hope that come the next election, you will have enough support to break the absolute power of the ANC. It is time for us to begin the "LONG WALK TO RECOVERY" from this current ANC government!!

  • sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-11-05 10:42

Why should ANY COMMENT by Maharaj be taken seriously because we know that he was 'brought back' to Government to COVER-UP BOTH PAST

  • Hezekiel Lefopane - 2012-11-05 10:54

DA must focus on delivery..people want to see delivery that publicity.. i wonder how many cases are there at PP s office..Criticising everything wont help..what happened to the case that was opened after a March in braamfontein to cosatu house...

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-05 11:24

The DA has done more for the area's they run, when compared to what the ANC does.

  • nonhlanhla.khanyile.12 - 2012-11-05 10:58

Why can't they feature Nkandla homestead in TOP BILLING so that all can see.

  • Mbuyisa Oos Gomba - 2012-11-05 11:03

one way or another or in future the president have to answer.

  • Mbuyisa Oos Gomba - 2012-11-05 11:08

Nkandla its a public place so everyone can go there or visit because its built by state money or publi money.

  • theMichaelHawthorne - 2012-11-05 11:21

Those 1000 protestor are zumavillians think every tintownians must march to protest outside zuma's house for non service delivery.

Do yourself a big favor and look on Google Earth then you can see Zumaville and what they busy doing no need to go there. Everybody can see for them self and make his own decision about the project.

  • chantz.vanrooyen - 2012-11-05 11:48

I Agree with Helen Zille, South Africa needs to Know where all our taxpayers funds are going. Ecspecially when so many people are going without their basic needs everyday.

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-05 12:09

The channels are ALL BLOCKED! The constipation attacking the presidency and the ANC in regards to divulging information openly needs to be treated with more serious means, and not simply just another turn to another tribaly controlled treasonous terrorist. HAND OVER THE TAPES while about it too
