No favours for ANC donors - Mkhize

2012-12-20 16:03

Bloemfontein - Those who make a private donation to the ANC should not expect anything in return, newly-elected treasurer general Zweli Mkhize said on Thursday.

"It's a free donation that will lead to nothing else," Mkhize told reporters in Bloemfontein.

"There are no conditions attached. If it has conditions attached it is not acceptable."

There had been assertions that those who made a contribution to the party benefited from business ventures connected to the ANC and the state.

Mkhize said donations, whether local or foreign, did not form part of a transaction. Mechanisms were in place to ensure proper accountability on private donations.

The recommendations with regard to financing and fundraising were adopted by delegates at the ruling party's 53rd national conference in Mangaung, said Mkhize.

The party was largely funded by contributions from outsiders and members.

Mkhize said the ANC had discussed a possible increase in membership fees, but decided against this.

The party also debated public funding.

"This area of public funding is a way of supporting our democracy and... [we must] ensure it's accompanied by accountability and transparency.

"The ANC, like any other entity, should participate in the economy through various business activities so it can support its resources."

There have been reports of concerns regarding the ANC's funding and budgeting for major conferences and events.

In his last financial report to the conference, former treasurer general Mathews Phosa said the party needed to assess the amount of money spent on rallies and events.

Mkhize said this was an issue the party would attend to.

"Big rallies tend to require lots of resources and planning and so there is a need to balance that with costs.

"So in political mobilisation costs come out and we can't avoid those."

Mkhize congratulated Phosa on his management of the party's finances over the past five years.

"He's done a brilliant job. He has managed the affairs of the ANC quite effectively."

"No favours for ANC donors", you actually mean "We will just take taxpayers money instead", ANC thieves. It's all give and no take, it's you pricks that benefit and not us South Africans. You ANC members are parasites to this country.

      jesibelle.krueger - 2012-12-20 16:18

Bhwaaaa, ha, ha, ha..! If you can lie like that then you can become president of the country.

      warren.rodel - 2012-12-20 16:43

What I like about the thumbs down option is that you can see how many cANCer members actually care about being called a parasite.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-12-20 17:13

They just can't help lying can they.

      christelle.theron.3 - 2012-12-20 17:21

I think there is a complete misunderstanding in the ANC about favours. Building a $250million village is not seen as a favour - getting luxury cars is not regarded as a favour, having holidays on taxpayers money is not a favour.............once they fully understand this concept, I believe we can see a change!

      liana.loots - 2012-12-20 18:08

lol, you think we are stupid

  • homes.zona - 2012-12-20 16:13

You only get something in return when you deposit directly into their personal bank accounts. Also their wives, aunties, uncles, cousins, childrens, grannies etc

      marilyn.docherty.9 - 2012-12-20 16:52

Keep your donation 'under wraps' and we will see what we can do for you!!!

  • bob.small.7547 - 2012-12-20 16:14

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-12-20 16:19

They shouldn't expect favours, but they will get favours anyway, that's how corruption works. And there was me thinking you guys understood all this already, seeing as you do it so well. I mean, how else do you explain the huge riches the ruling elite have? Hard work? hehe... no, seriously, how do you explain it?

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-12-20 16:16

Does this man belive his own words? Maybe he thinks everyone can't think for themselves.

  • christo.bokhorst - 2012-12-20 17:02

Do you mean in the past they did receive FAVOURS?????

  • duze.mthimunye - 2012-12-20 17:04

This is nonsensical and this kind of hogwash is what normally angers the masses because siyabona ukuthi senziwa izingane ezincane ezingenangqondo. Can you explain how the Guptas get most of their contracts and preferential treatment? If you don't have anything better to say just keep quiet. Sies uyasinyanyisa.

      warren.rodel - 2012-12-20 17:19

@Duze - Yes you tell him, and this is still happening in the background, this ANC is abusing every South African. I wish someone could step in and stop these clowns, it's not fair. I'm no good at the contracts that need tending, but I do know that there are other contractors out there and that are also way better than that Gupta thief.

  • makhosonke.mqikela - 2012-12-20 17:11

There's nothing as a 'free lunch'. Sir what you say is nothing but rhetoric and/or populism. Those who benefit are YOU at the expence of honest tax/rate payers.Come 2014 and we'll see...

  • herman.kramer.988 - 2012-12-20 17:19

      warren.rodel - 2012-12-20 17:29

It is very brave to make such a statement (a blatant lie) to supporters, I think that if I was there, and if I was an ANC member, then I think that I would have been the first one to throw a chair!

  • eric.f.moloi - 2012-12-20 17:50

  • mdu.s.khumalo - 2012-12-20 18:13

Pity that more than half of adult population in South Africa will always endorse corruption as they are partly involved either way. So statements like this will no doubt receive a high volume round of applause while corruption is getting routed all the sides

  • musa.kamashobane - 2012-12-20 18:22

Swelling, do you really think we are stupid?

  • firmsly.kabelo - 2012-12-20 18:24

Your party is responsible for the R20 billion South African is loosing every year on corruption and also responsible for R675 billion the country has lost since 1994.

  • deon.vantonder.77 - 2012-12-20 19:21

Prove it. It is about time that Luthuli House open their books for public scrutiny.

  • allan.rosenberg.752 - 2012-12-20 19:48

You must really think that the public are idiots. Show the public more respect if you want respect in return. There are so many examples of tenders given for favours that your statement just ridicules yourself. Spin us another one Dr.
