No war in the ANC, says Zuma

2012-12-21 08:43

Bloemfontein - People thought the ANC would be dead and buried in Mangaung where it held its national conference, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

"Many think there is a war in the ANC. They were saying this conference was going to die," Zuma said at The New Age breakfast in Bloemfontein.

"People were writing obituaries before we came here."

Internal democracy

He said it was because of the values of the African National Congress that the party had always survived.

Zuma defeated Kgalema Motlanthe in the race for the party's top job earlier this week.

"We believe in the internal democracy of the ANC," said Zuma.

"They [ANC members] were given an opportunity to think freely and make choices and not to make their choices in secret but to talk about it.

"But people mistake this for fighting," he said.

During the five-day national conference, which ended on Thursday, the ANC elected new leadership.

Top six

Cyril Ramaphosa was elected Zuma's deputy in an overwhelming victory.

Secretary general Gwede Mantashe and chairperson Baleka Mbete remained in their positions.

Former presidency spokesperson Jessie Duarte was elected deputy secretary general and KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Zweli Mkhize treasurer general.

The rest of the top six officials had joined Zuma at the breakfast.

Zuma said the ANC belonged to the people of South Africa and so the officials had to come together with one goal.

"So people in this country know who is in the ANC's top six," he said.

"Jessie Duarte was re-elected as deputy secretary general" to Genevieve Quintal you must check and edit your story before is published please, Jessie Duarte' position was uncontested please.

      John - 2012-12-21 09:21

Zuma is correct - there is no war in the ANC. The war is with the DA. Zumas re-election is the nail in the coffin for the ANC and the ANC should prepare itself to be 'dead and buried'. Zuma and buddies will not deliver AGAIN to the people over the next term....paving the way for the DA to take power by 2019. Viva DA! Viva!

      mfanafuthi.mhlungu - 2012-12-21 09:54

@john in your dreams maybe in your zombi land.

      Mike - 2012-12-21 09:56

@John.The problem is that ...How many black people will vote for DA , because..whites are minority and blacks are majority in this country.Just forget about seeing South Africa going back to the whites .No whites will governor this country again.Unless the prediction of end of the world can be true or happen.

      John - 2012-12-21 10:05

@ Mike ..... i think the political landscape is changing and the DA is gaining favour in the black community...lets see what Helen and Lindiwe can do over the next few years.....

      John - 2012-12-21 10:07

      @ Mfanafuthi .....no comment!

      Mike - 2012-12-21 10:47

@John...Do you believe, there is life after death?Do you think more than 35000000 to 40000000 or black South Africans will like to diagnose or experience what happened before and stick to it.I don't think so.Apartheid was a curse to every black south africa.Even although the poverty and unemployment is there. no Blacks will buy that.Helen can be strong to whites , but weak to blacks. Lindiwe she is just a puppet, not normal blacks will vote for her , only mental retarded will do.She is not the favourite to any blacks , but to her family, lets forget about her.

      h.simphiwe - 2012-12-21 11:04

"Re-elect as Deputy SG" is wrong in its own. She's former Spokesperson!!!!!!!!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-21 11:04

Mike, you say no white will govern this country again. Your democracy only counts for blacks then?.

      John - 2012-12-21 11:23

@ Mike....you need to let the past go. Stop patronising black people. It doesn't matter what colour you are, all of us South Africans want a government that works for the people. The ANC has failed all of us. I believe that more and more South Africans are learning to vote with our minds rather than by the colour of our skins.

  • tabisa.ndamase.7 - 2012-12-21 08:52

We all hope that there is no war in the ANC, am sure the oppositions are the ones who came up with those green lies.

      philani.goba - 2012-12-21 09:42

lmao! amanga aluhlaza - green lies...#epic!

      saintbruce.bruce - 2012-12-21 10:16

To come out and say it .... In International Political Speak - to outright deny something reveals more of the truth than the denial! There are at least three major factions fighting for power inside the ANC and have been doing so since they were a movement in exile long ago. The ANC resisted going to the TRC simply because they would be found out about the tortures, deaths and assassinations within their ranks during the 'struggle' years outside of any actual combat! A conference that should focus on the direction of the political party in a resonsible manner spends more time jockeying for positions of power than applying it's collective mind to trying to run this country! No change there. The inner battles continue and money flows "unaccountably" as usual!

  • Lebohang Petrus Majong - 2012-12-21 08:58

Denial stage- normally when things happen to us we sometimes turn a blind eye, but people c it from a distance, of cause dose in it will act as if everything is fine! lets hope its not like dat Mr. President wish u nd ur powerful team all de best in leading dis beautiful country of ours. A merry xmas nd a prosperous 2013 to all!I thank u

  • nkosi.tsheda - 2012-12-21 09:02

The media in SA has tendencies. They lied 2 us misled us n made us blv that d ANC was @ war. Wat do they hv 2 say nw that they were proven wrong

      aspruyt - 2012-12-21 09:18

What is it with the masses of sheep who cannot string one proper sentence together?

      profkaygee - 2012-12-21 10:41

I fail to understand one thing about your statement @Nkosi. How can the media, which has different journalists and editors and competition amongst themselves have amazingly similar stories about the same entity? Either the media (as divided as they are) are lying to us, or the ANC is the one lying to us.I am willing to bet on the latter.

  • attie.gerber.1 - 2012-12-21 09:05

maybe no war but plenty of corruption which is worse

  • davy.botha - 2012-12-21 09:06

Deal with the public as if they are idiots, but the facts will still be the same. The ANC have splinters and this will lead to the diminished ANC of the future. The old ANC died in Polokwane.

  • kholwani.ndlelambi - 2012-12-21 09:10

Viva ANC viva, what happened in mangaung is democracy at work, and indeed THE PEOPLE SHALL GORVERN - from the branches to the PECs and then the ANC conference in Mangaung. Give the ANC a round of applause.

      Lebohang Petrus Majong - 2012-12-21 09:14

      applause

      aspruyt - 2012-12-21 09:19

Blinded by stupidity or snout in the trough?

      attie.gerber.1 - 2012-12-21 10:19

applause for steeling money from the poor

      profkaygee - 2012-12-21 10:43

Lol, the people shall govern. Are you governing wena? Stop being stupid and actually use your tax crippled salary to get a better education so that you can start thinking for yourself.

  • Eterni80 - 2012-12-21 09:10

a successful conference doesn't make up for the mistakes you and your lousy party have made over the last 18 years. ever heard the expression: actions speak louder than words ?? the more you try and convince us it's business as usual in the cANCer, the more I believe you are LYING. with JZ in charge, it's all ahead full towards the iceberg.

  • Lebohang Petrus Majong - 2012-12-21 09:13

I hope that we r not counting our chickens b4 they hatch!!# I am glad that everything went WELL in Bloemfontein!#

  • rinus.za - 2012-12-21 09:14

Should read "No war YET in the ANC, says Zuma".

  • eland.snitbul - 2012-12-21 09:18

Haha keep telling yourself and all of the sheeple that.. Unfortunately while you’re sitting in your little mansion and your comrades are struggling to find food and shelter they are converting to other parties.. The only thing the ANC has done successfully is to keep the population uneducated and to buy their votes with a T-shirt and a piece of bread.

  • valkyriaza - 2012-12-21 09:19

One article and the sheep already falling over themselves congratulating themselves that all is well, because the conference didn't degenerate into violence and chaos. It's no wonder ANC wins general elections, their user base cannot think long-term.

  • jack.trend.3 - 2012-12-21 09:20

  • difa.mashwama - 2012-12-21 09:21

did anyone contest Hellen Zille during their conference ??

      mfanafuthi.mhlungu - 2012-12-21 09:48

No the is no democracy in da.

      profkaygee - 2012-12-21 10:45

Guys come on now. She was not contested not because she forbid anyone to contest, but because no one wanted to contest. Why don't you do the honourabale thing, get a DA membership, then contest her position, and let us see what happens then. And I remember her saying that she is dissapointed that no one is contesting her position because she wanted someone (particularly a black person) to contest her position.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-21 11:12

Difa.mashwama. Did anyone contest Zuma?. Mothlante did window dressing, no more, no less. Don't be naive.

  • ross.urquhart1 - 2012-12-21 10:01

Zuma should be banned from using the word "VALUES" ... ! Unless he refers to monetary values as spending R250m of taxpayers money, even if "rightful by policy", is a disgrace for any leader with "VALUES", then there are the affairs, the shower aids joke , illegitimate kids, hundreds of charges etc etc etc..... great CV for a man of "VALUES" ... ????

  • sean.d.parker - 2012-12-21 10:02

On one had he says there is no war in the ANC and on other he says that they want to root out dissadents. Me thinks he speaks with fork tongue! Its not what you hear from the ANC (the call for unity) its what you don't hear (the call for Truth) that is worrying!

  • sipho.mthembu.56 - 2012-12-21 10:05

South africa is headed for doom under the elected leadership of ANC u reckon? Same as you predicted before '94? Let's hope this time you got it right.

      eland.snitbul - 2012-12-21 12:33

The rand has weakened, violence has increased, poverty has increased, SA is bottom of the list when it comes to education in Africa I can go on more but I'm sure this has proven that the predictions before 94 is well on its way of happening....

  • chrisjanbotha - 2012-12-21 10:16

  • leon.nel.52 - 2012-12-21 11:12

Ag Mike, your still a young boy, but you have grown an apartheid mentality. I thought the struggle was not to judge people on the color of their skin, but that's what you do? Do you realize the irony. You are more full of race hatred than the apartheid government!? The DA already has more black members and than white members. Lindiwe is no puppet, you've been fed to many ANC lies. You can continue to insult black people that are tired of the ANC corruption and lack of leadership, but don't think that will change their minds.

  • mapitsi.mogale - 2012-12-21 11:32

War or no war it doesnt matter. I think what should be done whn voting for a state president is voting for the best candidate for the position, not a cndt who was elected to be the pesident of a political party. Citizens must choose who they wnt no wht is done la mzanzi

      cyntay - 2012-12-21 11:42

4000 odd choose the president for the masses and they call it democracy!1 the people have not spoken. there should be a referendum among the people for who they want as president!

  • chris.khanye - 2012-12-21 11:34

The killing of ANC public representatives in KZN by other comrades, isn't war within! The recent attempted assassination and subsequent assassination in the NW is also not a war within! Threats made against Motlhanthe by MKVA and the disruption of a Branch meeting in Ekurhuleni allegedly by gun totting MKVA members, is also not a war within! Headlines - chairs fly at ANC Branch meeting! Mr President Zuma please educate me - exactly which ANC isn't at war with itself?

  • Ettienne Hawley - 2012-12-21 11:46

in all honesty im anti ANC, however i will concede to the fact that if Kgalemo Motlante was chosen as ANC president things would take a turn for the better. Now we have to deal with Zuma.... again.... when will the ANC followers realise that they arent all they're cracked out to be? i mean honestly, good going guys! thanks for bring another term of injustice to South Africa!

  • reine.marais - 2012-12-21 12:12

  • tony.naidoo - 2012-12-21 13:24

Values? Corruption, nepotism, rape, miscarriage of justice, compassionate leave for 'sick' criminal cronies = VALUES? I'd rather vote for Hells Angels!
