North West toll protest suspended

Johannesburg - A protest at the Swartruggens toll gate on the N4 has been halted, Cosatu said on Monday.

"We decided to suspend the protest and not to risk our members for arrest [sic]. The police indicated that we did not have a permit for the protest," the union federation's North West provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said.

"We have dispersed our members after a meeting with the police. We are coming back on January 25."

Cosatu had wanted to hold an overnight protest to demand that the toll fees be reduced from R71 to R20 for a standard car, or scrapped.

Phetoe said the Kgetleng local municipality had not granted permission for the protest. In a statement on 28 December, Phetoe said the protest was going ahead as planned, from 14:00 until late.

He said the municipality only responded when the Congress of SA Trade Unions asked about the application on 27 December.

Phetoe said they were still waiting for the national and provincial governments to respond to their memorandums.

This exploiting money making racket must come to an end! DUMP all tolls use the fuel levy for road construction and maintainance! That is what it was implemented for before the TOLL road SCAM!

Voting for another government is a pipe dream. Simply put, do not pay. Let them come for you, get a court date and then pay (?) this time a few million a month. What a laugh !
