Northern Cape premier collapses during address

2012-02-17 12:50

Kimberley - Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed during her State of the Province address on Friday.

A member of the public who attended the address and did not want to be identified, said paramedics immediately rushed to assist her.

“She just started to slur during her speech and collapsed.”

The speech, which also marks the official opening of the legislature, took place at the CRC Church in Kimberley. An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards to transport Jenkins to hospital.

A representative of the premier’s office, Mafu Davids, confirmed that Jenkins had been rushed to hospital.

“We are concerned about her health, but we do not have any other information at this stage,” he said.

Davids said Jenkins was almost finished with her speech when the incident happened.

He said invited guests are going to proceed to lunch while they await news of Jenkins’s condition. Hundreds of people from across the province and national and international guests attended the event.

Boeboe van Wyk, the speaker of the provincial legislature, announced that the event had adjourned.

He said they will make a statement to the media later and an announcement would follow on when the State of the Province address will resume.

    We wish her speedy recovery

  • Shistirrer - 2012-02-17 13:00

Oops - slurred speech while she was OK before - sounds like a stroke.

      John - 2012-02-18 02:20

Sounds more like Shaikin, Selebi disease

  • Susan - 2012-02-17 13:00

It must be very stressful to be in politics.

      Vusi - 2012-02-17 13:05

What are you talking about Susan????? It is a party all day long if you belong to the ANC!!!! Big Mercedes, lots of expensive hotels, good food! It is a blast!!!!!

  • Alisha - 2012-02-17 13:08

Come on guys, have some empathy & compassion. How would you feel if it was you, your family member of close friend up there? At least she was doing something positive, which I couldn't say the same for you lot who seem to sit on here all day, unproductive and spew BS.

      Piet - 2012-02-17 13:14

I do not know of any productivity when it comes to ANC deployed cadres!

      Kobus - 2012-02-17 13:17

Totally agree Alisha, this could happen to anyone including a family member. These jokers must show some compassion towards other beings. (except Juliarse perhaps ;))

      kgomotso.radise - 2012-02-17 13:21

Former governor: Mr Tito Mboweni when he increases Repo Rate he used to say pray and go to church that interest rate do not go up. I guess these new officials they now forgot to do the aforementioned

      Alisha - 2012-02-17 13:21

Your deep-seated HATE is eating you alive and consuming your souls guys. The fact that you have to twist everything in these press releases into a political or race issue proves you have already been defeated and controlled by FEAR. You are 100% OWNED by your perceived enemy and you don't even know it.

      Piet - 2012-02-17 13:23

Kobus, Juliearse is somebodies son you know! Wonder if he knows his father?

      desertratbkf - 2012-02-17 13:30

Yeah! "Bugger this. This means work. Time for a lie down!"

      Mike - 2012-02-17 13:39

@Alisha: Admitted! But are YOU not also sitting on your backside answering or commenting on others all day? Now that is what I call unproductivity!!

      Christopher - 2012-02-17 15:18

You know how many people are struggling in her province because of bad service, crappy hospitals, crap everything really...who have probably died because of the governments inability to provide the most basic health care...but she can spend thousands on hotels etc...What goes around comes around!

      alansmartSnr - 2012-02-17 16:52

@ Alisha.. No hate or redicule, I'm totally neutral here, but when it comes to obesity, I feel no compassion. Fat at the bottom and a head full of sawdust? There's bound to be a physical reaction. Me thinks she collapsed at the shock of reading her own bullsh^&t. For that I can't have any empathy.. or sympathy.

  • riana.bruynslombard - 2012-02-17 13:09

Shame. Hope she's ok! it has been a long day for all of them and she probably didn't eat breakfast and is dehydrated. Probably stayed up all night to learn the speech. Lots of pressure, that's for sure!

  • Ben - 2012-02-17 13:11

Northen Cape province...I'd collapse as well..

  • Piet - 2012-02-17 13:13

Do you think the guilt of all the lies eventualy caught up with her?

      vlarismam - 2012-02-17 13:32

Doubt it! Probably the 'good' life did though...

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:31

What lies piet my love..oh please tell me..I'm dyyyyying to know, while my aunt lies in hospital...please..tell me...let's do this!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tshiamo - 2012-02-17 13:14

I hope it is a metaphor for the impending political collapse of "deployed" premiers in other provinces!Falling phansi literally! Now Mathale next in Limpopo!

  • Jeffrey - 2012-02-17 13:23

pitty, nothing to say then collapse

      Vishalle Hiralal - 2012-02-17 13:34

      That's very immature of you.

      Peter - 2012-02-17 13:35

"Davids said Jenkins was almost finished with her speech when the incident happened."

  • Rebaone - 2012-02-17 13:25

Ag shame! We wish her a speedy recovery and also wait for that adress of the province.

  • Marion - 2012-02-17 13:26

Whether we like the ANC or not, this is a woman whose life could be at risk and she is being spoken about in a very callous manner on this page. She has a family and they must be very distressed right now. Let's not sink to our lowest levels in situations like this. I hope that it is nothing serious and wish her a speedy recovery.

      Piet - 2012-02-17 13:30

What was that about you have to earn respect?

      Mary-Ann - 2012-02-17 13:37

Well said Marion. Slurring and then collapsing would typically be either a stroke or brain tumour ie. may have absolutely nothing to do with lifestyle, and may have everything to do with stress. And it can happen to anybody and no one would wish it on anybody or be callous about it. To the original idiot in this storyline, Vusi - I don't think you would be taking your stance if it happened to someone in YOUR family.

      Steven - 2012-02-17 14:09

Yeah like she gives a crap about all the starving people in her province while she is shoving koeksisters into her mouth - and dishing out tenders to her cadre's

      Marion - 2012-02-17 14:30

@Piet.... No one is asking anyone to give respect. Compassion is what is totally lacking in so many who comment on these pages... particularly the faceless ones... @Steven... are you giving a crap about any of your starving countrymen when you are stuffing food of any kind into your mouth? Or is it only politicians who are supposed to give a crap?

      Jeffrey - 2012-02-17 15:01

Agree Marion, I do not like the ANC but leave the politics out of it. A bit of compassion would not be amiss here.

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:28

Hi there..I am the niece of the woman you are speaking of...I am disgusted some of your mentality..would you say these things to me or her perhaps..really, I feel ashamed to be a fellow south african of some of you..this woman is the most amazing person you could ever meet..get to know...I wouldn't wish this on your family...I really wana say..'Screw you' but I will not sink down to the smuck that you are

  • Mtizozo - 2012-02-17 13:33

This is not a joke, someone can lose her life, let's be matured enough and dont make this a political thing. this could have happen to any one at any where,,

      Piet - 2012-02-17 13:44

It is all political, If the ANC cared about the people, we would care about them!

  • Klipkop - 2012-02-17 13:41

Let me quote John McClane (Bruce Willis) Die Hard 4. "It's a little thing they invented back in the sixties called jogging".

  • marcus.daily3 - 2012-02-17 13:45

She could'nt believe all the nonsense she was reading....

  • Tokoloshe - 2012-02-17 13:46

I do recall Jackie also collapsed recently? Maybe they ate from the same gravy!

      jacques.koorts - 2012-02-17 13:59

how is old jackie doing anyway?

  • Tshiamo - 2012-02-17 13:51

  • Tshepo Ship Sekepe - 2012-02-17 13:53

Oops! Stage fright,...wish you a speedy recovery! Shame..

  • Whitty - 2012-02-17 13:58

  • Tshiamo - 2012-02-17 14:02

wish you a speedy service delivery!

  • Devon Roman - 2012-02-17 14:04

The people making light of this should be ashamed of themselves. They must realise that there could be something seriously wrong with her. I wonder if they'll crack jokes if it was their mother, wife or friend who just collapses...??

  • William - 2012-02-17 14:23

Agreed, they say 'Feed the Hungry' Well it appears as if these fat cats have eaten them all!!!! Give them bread and water I say instead of champagne and caviar these corrupt buggers are so used too!!

  • Mlungisi - 2012-02-17 14:26

We wish you well Madam, please don't forget to consult a Sangoma. There is a lot going on in the NC.

      Tokoloshe - 2012-02-17 16:58

I have the right Muti! Muti loot nie, Muti gravy train ride nie and all will be well.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-17 14:38

Isn't this the one who, during the time that she was supposed to do some work, visited the Court to support the John Block guy who is accused of stealing many millions from the people? Perhaps her concience is catching up with her.

      Charmaine Paterson - 2012-02-17 18:23

The very same. Perhaps she should try spending a bit more time with the people of the Northern Cape. Education is slipping, unemployment is rife, corruption and dodgy tenders. Infra-structure is decrepit, but she parties like this is 7de Laan.

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:21

Lmao omw..perhaps..just both should get a life. up on things you know nothing of

  • Don - 2012-02-17 14:44

Hope she recovers fully, sounds like something not too good. Wish her well.

  • Bomb - 2012-02-17 14:52

    Shaik......Selebi........Jenkins.......mmmmm, makes you wonder.

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:20

Go jump in a lake bra..

      Bomb - 2012-02-19 02:46

@Taryn......uhhhh, the lights are on, but obviously no one's home.

  • Bantu - 2012-02-17 15:08

    Ye Madoda..he

  • Lebo - 2012-02-17 15:42

A church should be used as a praying house not a political battlefield...God punishes

  • mluleki.simelane - 2012-02-17 16:26

Shame, maybe she is diabetic. I hope it was not a stroke

  • Johann Enslin - 2012-02-17 16:38

WTF is wrong with you people. Like her or not it sounds serious. Have some self respect.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-02-17 17:16

Bottom line: Law of evolution. Survival of the fittest. Hope we get someone fitter to do her job. Nobody could do it worse..or wait a minute, I forgot about our Zuma and Mal Emmer.

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:18

Thank you johan...and alan, whatever your name is...she is the best person for the job, get your facts straight...I hear google is amazing for knowledge..since you're lacking

  • Nosimphiwo - 2012-02-17 16:45

im just worried....i thnk she is in an actual fact hiding something or running away from will soon be revealed kodwa!!

  • Nkulekweni - 2012-02-17 17:22

I wish somebody here would send these comments to her office. Do you think when they realise just how much hate they generate they will change their ways?

  • Seja - 2012-02-17 17:29

Comrade Bheki Cele should come back and introduce the Stomach-In-Chest-Out fitness programme that worked so well with police recruits!! These politicians of ours neglect their health till it gets to life threatening levels ... GEMS needs to introduce some sort of aggressive health benefits programme to encourage healthy living among government employees.

      Tokoloshe - 2012-02-17 18:15

Comrade Bheki Cele did not give a damn about health benefits, he and the politicians in power are more concerned about acquiring Wealth Benefits. Eish!

  • marc.landsberg1 - 2012-02-17 21:39

@Mike...true but maybe the ground instituted an assault charge against her...and Gary...wake up to reality...and invest in spell check

  • Roschelle - 2012-02-18 05:35

All Our prayers must be with the Northern Cape Premier. When someone collapses, then you get postings of jokes...I suspect then someone of you could have the same characteristics of the 'lynching' mob; who sodimised Gadaffi ?

  • Adam - 2012-02-18 07:31

My mother always said you will be struck down for telling lies.

  • jojwana - 2012-02-18 08:20

@mike fraser i trully agree with vusi, i know most of us still prefer mbeki as our current president, as we adress him like that, but truth be told he is not, zuma is. so Zanele Mbeki is not a president's wife but a former. zuma's wives are not matured enough like zanele and michele. they dont do anything other than shoping and looking for tenders.

  • Gerhardus - 2012-02-18 08:58

talking a lot of crap all day and solving no issues is a stressfull job.

  • Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 19:16

So if anyone else has something negative to say about my aunt, keep it to your self..she is going through a recovery process and we have to keep this disgusting things away from her...clearly some of you don't have a heart otherwise you wouldn't say these things about another human make me feel ashamed to know that you are south african..I wouldn't wish this on your family, but clearly you would on mine..

      Max - 2012-02-18 19:42

Taryn, your aunt's incompetence is causing a lot of people to suffer on a daily basis in utmost poverty and without any prospects of a future. This while she was supporting a criminal in court like John Block. So if you want to play the humanity card, where is her humanity when she sees the suffering around her? You can only claim empathy if you display empathy.

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-18 20:13

Do you know her? Do you know the work she does? I see it..I know how hard she works..we hear it first hand. So do not catergorise her on the basis that she is anc...get your facts straight sweet heart..get to know her..then let's have a fat conversation about empathy..and lets hope nothing like this happens to one of your family members...,aaaand I thang yuuuur

Bomb - 2012-02-19 02:50 still didnt answer why she supported a criminal like John Block? Hand in the cookie jar perhaps?

      Taryn Dizzy Howard - 2012-02-19 11:26

Lmao fish much??? Look my aunts lying in the hospital, do you really think I'd tell you anything? Sometimes you just need chill, have a good sunday and speculate around the lunch table with your family...oo God forbid you mother, or sister, or aunt has a stroke..and then I'll pounce on you...I heard this and that...bearing in mind..I don't know her from a bar of soap...really dude..get a life and stop leeching off others..I would actually love to meet you guys and have this convo face to you won't coz you're all cowards...and I thang yuur
