Nzimande: NUM won't be destroyed

2012-10-27 18:00

Johannesburg - The SA Communist Party (SACP) would not allow the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to be destroyed, the party's secretary-general Blade Nzimande said on Saturday.

"NUM is the only best capable union to represent mineworkers in South Africa," he said.

Nzimande was addressing a Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) rally at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg.

He said the SACP was concerned about some employers who were "conniving with some elements" to destroy NUM.

"They want to kill NUM by funding counter-revolution formations like AMCU [Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union]."

He thanked Cosatu members for their discipline and said that when a group of striking Anglo Platinum workers who opposed the trade federation charged at marching members, Cosatu remained disciplined.

"What I have seen is an extreme act of provocation, the police did well to disperse them," he said.

"I am interested to see how the media will report this."

Nzimande was speaking at a relatively empty stadium after a large number of Cosatu members ran away when police were dispersing striking workers who opposed the rally.

The group wore black t-shirts and said they would not return to work until their salary demands were met.

Blade, you need their money??? You know with way the money blows. Idiot.

And so the mighty fall. Power is also a sleek illusionist!

      godfrey.welman - 2012-10-27 19:26

Num and Cosatu is fast becoming as irelavent as SACP, hiding behind the ANC.

      phello.khiba - 2012-10-27 20:58

      blade is more worried,abt Num,not education..cause he doesn't benefit 4rom education..he is power hungry, mantashe.vavi ramaphosa,ur brother zuma.beware nothing last 4eva..

      louis.olivier.988 - 2012-10-28 12:03

Just shows the arrogance of this ring gear. He can now predict the future He is so out of touch with the stupid num members who are totally incapable of seeing that the num is there to keep them stupid while the anc rakes in the bucks. To be blunt to the num members, you are all idiots and you buddies at the top and their anc crooks are milking you dry and living in luxury while you lot starve. If you took your num fees/contribution that keeps blade, vavi and his anc buddies in luxury, you could’ve used that money and invested in the shares of the mining company and reaped the benefits. The only people reaping the benefits are the guys that have suckered you lot for years. Just check out his transport and house.

  • kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-10-27 18:06

Maybe not but already they have become irrelevant, just as the communist parties have all over the world. They now all will just remain parasites.

  • phahla.matwa - 2012-10-27 18:10

    U r sick wena

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-27 18:11

What more can one add to the following report in the news item above to place the events in context: "Nzimande was speaking at a relatively empty stadium after a large number of Cosatu members ran away when police were dispersing striking workers who opposed the rally."

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-28 01:08

The sacp (deliberately used lower case) are even more irrelevant now than they were in the 80's and 90's, cosatu are heading in the same direction, as are the rest of the unions. The members are sick of the corruption from the leadership, they have finally realised that the leadership, in collusion with the ANC leadership have no intention of uplifting the average man in the steet, they are in it for their own enrichment. The revolution has not yet begun. Mark my words, the sh*t has yet to hit the preverbial fan.

    The angry man

  • el.sat.71 - 2012-10-27 18:18

Nzimande, your political bankrupt SACP is funded by Cosatu. You are a capitalist, fighting to keep your corrupt president in power for your spot on the gravy train. Any person can join any orginisation of their joice. Your Sacp “members” do not fund your “party” because you have no members. Shut up idiot.

  • Vince.York - 2012-10-27 18:21

Quite right Blunt - YOU have virtually accomplished it single handedly yourself.

  • tilovonbrandis - 2012-10-27 18:22

counter-revolution formations like AMCU - AMCU IS the revolutionary formation. NUM is not and has not been the revolutionary formation since 1994. Does this man actually believe he is part of the NEC of a legitimate party? No wonder that revolutionary parties winning a struggle can never lead a country successfully, they never leave the struggle mentality and any person, group or party opposing them is "THE ENEMY", no matter how legit the opposition and/or the issue is! Shame...

      fanie.viljoen.73 - 2012-10-27 20:49

  • SharonE - 2012-10-27 18:32

"conniving with some elements" Why are they so vague? Sounds like Jacob's "Some people of some description." If they don't have proof, and can't name names, then they must just sit and not say anything!

  • logen.naidoo - 2012-10-27 18:40

What did they do for the workers.

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-27 18:41

Suddenly Blade is the huge, influential patron/sponser of Cosatu? The superman protector? What's wrong with Vavi and Cosatu that they can't stand/survive on their own two legs? They need Nzimande of all people? What is that one hears in the background? That sound of ghostly chains rattling as if they realize the end may be near. You Blade Nzimande and your Vavi with your ideological BS and your trade unions went out of your way to keep workers enslaved. No education at all to allow them to participate meaningfully in the economy through capital accumulation and investing it in the economy. Keep them the underlings and the inferior in the economy for the sake of your trade union subscription income and your ideological BS. Now we see the consequences. And you, both of you, are powerless to control the situation. You can't encourage and mislead people to remain subservient and expect that they will be happy with the consequences forever. You tried it for your own selfish benefits.

  • murphee.mekgwe - 2012-10-27 18:42

And you were the core supporters of the tri-alliance. I would like to get your input, please? Check me on FB. I'll 'befriend' you, OK?

Blade, any person has the right to join any legal orginisation - that is part of democracy. Your SACP is funded by Cosatu, because you have no members, due to your outdated communist policy. You are a political parasite. You preach communism but live a luxury capitalist life, driving BMW'and Jeeps.Shut up, ugly idiot.

  • muke.matshaba - 2012-10-27 20:09

Blade its over admit it,once the workers rejects an old union and cherish a new one theres no stopping them,in its entire history cosatu was never humilliated like today so give it up u r no longer needed, people r no longer interested in u guys cause at night u r dining n clubbing with those mine bosses, but during the day u act as if they r ur enemies lol.

  • blip.noodlum - 2012-10-27 20:15

Stick to sociology, Blade. You know nothing about mining and what's best for miners. They'll decide for themselves whether their interests are best served by a sweetheart union run by fatcats and whose shop stewards are backhanded R14000 a month by mining companies to be meek and compliant, or whether they'd prefer a radical band of committed socialists who live and act and struggle for the working-class like authentic revolutionaries, not BMW-chauffeured chardonnay-socialist poseurs like you and Vavi.

  • joe.smit.549 - 2012-10-27 20:17

    Not to mention Cyril!

  • punungwe - 2012-10-27 20:24

If COSATU wants to survive, they have to distance themselves from the ruling elite and establish their own political base. There is precedent. In Zambia the labour movement distanced itself from UNIP and formed the MMD. Chiluba rose to power. In Zimbabwe the ZCTU used to be hand in glove with Zanu-PF. They distanced themselves and formed the MDC. If they had had a more capable leader than Tsvangirai, they would be ruling now. COSATU has been much closer to the liberation partners, the ANC than the two examples I cite above. But the dynamics of class struggle will not spare them. A gap will always develop between the ruling elite and the working masses. Eventually the working masses will take their votes elsewhere. The workshop floor workforce distancing themselves from COSATU is a sign of that beginning to happen. Do not think the process will suddenly reverse. It is slow but it won't stop. With time a labour driven party will take on the elite and if COSATU are still nut and bolt with the ruling elite, they will be abandoned together with their friends.

It gets complicated when you put nationalists, communists, socialists and capitalistic opportunists under the same badge. How do you keep the frogs from jumping out of the bucket? Easy. Find a common enemy, and if that enemy doesn't exist, CREATE that enemy! (or use old slogans and rhetoric that worked well for about 100 years, (Fidel & Chavez do it, so...)That'll unify the masses, as they are stupid, we kept them stupid, That's one thing we got right!! You go Blade, our own cultural revolution, SA style. Cry the beloved country.
