Official funeral for Roy Padayachie

2012-05-05 19:18

Johannesburg - Public Service and Administration Minister Roy Padayachie would be honoured with a category one official funeral, the presidency announced on Saturday.

"This category of a funeral is reserved for Ministers who are still serving in office," said spokesperson Harold Maloka in a statement.

Padayachie, 62, was found dead in his hotel room in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia by a colleague. He was attending a meeting of the African Peer Review Mechanism.

He had joined the public service and administration ministry in October last year. He was former minister of communication and before that deputy minister of public service and administration.

The burial would take place in Durban on Wednesday, and national flags would be flown at half mast from Monday in honour of Padayachie and former co-operative governance and traditional affairs minister Sicelo Shiceka until then.

Labour Minister Mildred Olifant would serve in Padayachie's position until further notice.

Earlier, Padayachie's remains arrived back in South Africa.

"Minister Padayachie's body was handed over to his family and loved ones after it arrived in Durban from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia," Maloka said.

Olifant and representatives of the provincial government, representing President Jacob Zuma and Cabinet, joined the family.

Zuma personally telephoned Padayachie's wife, Sally Mudaly Padayachie, to convey his condolences.

Details of the burial would be communicated later by Minister Collins Chabane, who is the chairperson of the inter-ministerial committee on State funerals, Maloka said.

      R.I.P Comrade,

      Raj - 2012-05-05 20:29

francois.smith.7: You are a very sick person, so sick i would not even wish you buried with a cockroach, i have more respect for the cockroach. Burn in hell when you go, sicko.

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-05-05 20:44

What is the problem, Raj? I think you must read ALL the comments regarding Padayachie. I personally think that it is a big loss for SA. It was also a big loss that someone as talented as Minister Padayachie could not soar to higher heights due to his comrades. The first thing the ANC said was that he was "clean". I think that is sick.

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-05-05 20:46

Raj, please read: "Padayachie 'a committed patriot'".

      Smile - 2012-05-05 21:14

:O Realy Irene... Mmmm.. I should have done more digging! Down with MRS and MR Morar! Both corrupt ANC CONDOM COMRADE!!! SHAME ON YOU!

      Smile - 2012-05-05 21:19

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-05-05 21:29

Vote Raj - Vote Cockroach! Shame and now he pulls a good comrade's name through the dwang. My condolences even more to Minister Padayachie's family.

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-05-05 22:16

I think we must print this page as election material for the next one! (Mr Zuma, mind I did spell that with an "l".)

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-06 07:49

Raj and his ilk should learn to treat the people that pay their salaries with respect. You are there to SERVE!

      jp.wittstock - 2012-05-10 06:55

You do know he stole a school right? Only in South African can a CONMAN become a minisiter in the government. Roy Padayachee, rise from a CONMAN in Chatsworth to Minister of Public Works is a great achievemnet for those who appointed him there. God Save South African even this man falsified his C.V. to get acceptance

  • Pule - 2012-05-05 19:38

News24 why don't you just include these news in the latest 1 and make one full article?

  • Africanism - 2012-05-05 19:43

      Vic - 2012-05-05 19:58

It's a pity that thieving, corrupt Ministers enjoy this category of funeral(at taxpayers expense)with those who have unblemished records; the latter in the minority by a long way.

  • Deon - 2012-05-05 19:45

Why not, PARTY TIME. Free booze and food thanks to the South African Tax Payers.

  • 2zbunu - 2012-05-05 21:21

Oh no!!!!!!! RSA how many more of the old (ministers & their deputies) must die in office while young and the restless comrades are waiting for their turn. Pls SA let us consider giving opportunity to young comrades. Thus why they even get tired of waiting and rust and start to be angry & uncontrollable with a rude behaviour accopanied with hatred. Condolences to our both fatherly figures in ANC politics we will miss them.

      Smile - 2012-05-05 21:22

      Grace - 2012-05-06 10:01

  • dianne.hartley.9 - 2012-05-06 08:50

Tax payers money wasted yet again! Meanwhile in ext 8 Carletonville out of 48 hours we've had no water for 32. How about fixing this instead of giving a corrupt politician a fancy funeral.

  • Jonny Lee - 2012-05-06 09:22

Who cares if you have water or not? He needs a proper Class1 funeral worth 1 mil. and his family. he was part of the struggle!

      dianne.hartley.9 - 2012-05-06 09:47

      Grace - 2012-05-06 09:57

Which struggle?? We have MANY in SA

  • Grace - 2012-05-06 09:56

'Official' meaning WE paying for it right? I've never heard of the guy lol.. And now they won't even serve cake! Gravy train ALL the way!

  • Raj - 2012-05-06 11:58

@Irene & Smile: Passed on your comments to my attorney. For your information: I AM NOT AN ANC COUNCILLOR. I DO NOT RECEIVE A SALARY EITHER FROM THE ANC OR GOVERNMENT. AND I AM NOT THE RAJ MORAR FROM ITHALA BANK. You should have called Johann Krog who raised the matter in parliament to verify the facts before rushing to your key boards, which will now cost you.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-06 17:41

      Shame, Raj.

  • Tumelo Molete - 2012-05-06 17:14

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-06 17:42

      I agree 100%, Tumelo

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-06 17:41

The Government officials will certainly be sad to see this man go. Was he not instrumental in arranging those astronomical salaries and obscene perks? Flags halfmasted for Shiceca and Padayachie? I for one, will observe this with contempt. For all the children raped and murdered in our country ;for each time the ANC steals from the people, or tries to suppress the people, the flags should be set at half mast. Maybe we just need shorter flagpoles, or no flag at all.

      Raj - 2012-05-06 19:00

      Shame for ???

  • Flynn - 2012-05-07 12:53

    Condolenses to the Padayachie family.
