Parliament to write off Travelgate losses

2011-08-30 13:04

Cape Town - Parliament has decided to write off the R12m in outstanding debt owed to it by MPs who were implicated in the Travelgate scandal.

A letter from National Assembly speaker Max Sisulu to Democratic Alliance MP Ian Davidson also said that no further action would be taken against politicians implicated as the records of the travel agency used, Bathong Travel, were destroyed.

"As the debt was not recoverable and still on Parliament's books, it resulted in an audit query. Taking into consideration both these factors (the query and the fact that there were no records), the administration advised the presiding officers to write off the debts. In the light of this it is not possible to recover monies from members," Sisulu's letter said.

Only six out of 79 of the MPs implicated in the scandal have been criminally prosecuted and, according to Sisulu, the remaining 73 would not be charged.

"I trust that this settles the matter", concluded Sisulu in his letter.

DA to request investigation

However, Davidson said it did not and that if the matter were left as it were, then it would reinforce the perception that public-office bearers could steal from the people of SA with impunity.

"We cannot endorse a mass bail-out of Members of Parliament (MPs) whose conduct was both illegal and morally reprehensible," Davidson said.

Davidson said he would write to Ben Turok, Ethics Committee chairperson, and request that, in light of the list of Travelgate MPs being made public, that he fully investigate all who have failed to pay back the money owed to Parliament.

"The action taken by the Ethics Committee against Yolanda Botha last week should be the rule, not the exception. MPs that have defrauded and undermined the integrity of Parliament must be investigated and brought to book," he said.

The list of MPs implicated in the Travelgate scandal included a number of high-ranking ANC members, including State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, whose wife has been found guilty of drug smuggling.

You can get away with crime in SA. Just make sure you have your ANC membership number so that you can be pardoned.

      cliffarc - 2011-08-30 20:18

      - And this Anc govt, can also write off any more taxes from me.

      karlkat - 2011-08-30 13:35

@Jake Do not be so hard on them Jake!!! After all they are human, right thinking, responsible and accountable so they claim but sometimes I also am in doubt because of their interpretation of what is right or wrong

  • Bloodbane_2 - 2011-08-30 13:19

Guess that means they can write off the toll gate as a loss as well.

      PB - 2011-08-30 13:21

      Great idea Bloodbane!

      Playnice - 2011-08-30 13:47

      GypseyAnn - 2011-08-30 13:51

I hadn't seen your comment and made a similar one myself. Extremely good idea I would say. Also note how this is slipped in conveniently when everyone's eyes are on the criminal behaviour of the ANCYL!

      Bloodbane_2 - 2011-08-30 14:24

@GypseyAnn - :) it gets better, since it's right next to this article Mthethwa warns corrupt officials.

  • Daveza - 2011-08-30 13:19

Max Sisulu and the 79 thieves. What a disgusting disgraceful bunch of crooks. Sies !

  • Richie - 2011-08-30 13:20

    Flipping disgusting!

  • george60 - 2011-08-30 13:20

This is africa, don't expect much. When there is no more economy and tax payers, they will do as the rest of africa demand from the western world. China and other will come and help themselves with the minerals that are still left, until the ANC have no more credit, like in Zim.

  • ConcernedMom - 2011-08-30 13:21

It's not their hard earned money being squandered so THEY DON'T CARE. Throw the money away, its O.K, more will fall from the sky after it has been ripped out of the tax payers pocket.

  • Davearch - 2011-08-30 13:22

Ha . .can they please write off my rates bill ?? I suppose not, is this what is meant when the ANC says it was to create an EQUAL SOCIETY !! As it is what on earth do these useless creatures produce for the country !! And they just got a 5% increase .. PATHETIC ANC !!

  • Daemos1 - 2011-08-30 13:22

Gee thanks for writing off our tax money without asking, f**kers

  • willieman - 2011-08-30 13:24

"I trust that this settles the matter",Max you must just as well say Cele and Nkabinde-Mahlangu should walk free. This is truelly ANIMAL FARM at it's best.I'm sorry if your parents were alive they will drown in their tears.SHOCKING MAX coming from you.

      Don_Quixote - 2011-08-30 14:46

Our illustrious Speaker of Parliament doesn't have the cojones to go after these 73 thieves of taxpayers' money. A simple short comment "I trust this settles the matter" doesn't cut it Max. Theft is theft. I'm afraid that you are tarred with the same brush as your fellow thieving ANC members in Parliament. You are not only a disgrace to your parents and the general law abiding citizens of this country but may I ask; who gave you the authority to @#&k with our money as you see fit. In short you are a disgrace. Pitiful indeed!!

  • RobertKay - 2011-08-30 13:25

So the thieves, who are supposed to make rules and legislation for this country, got away with R12 mill. of our tax money. Stealing of course is part of the culture in this country.

  • p123 - 2011-08-30 13:25

Typical ANC, steal with no conscience, WTF do we pay taxes, so these bastards can get fatter, they are fat enough!!! So sick of this corrupt ANC, can any brain-dead ANC supporter defend why their thieving comrades should get away with this? If I steal from my Company - a) I get fired b) I get charged and go to jail. Makes me want to vomit!!!

      PAR - 2011-08-30 13:31

It is no wonder that we are the highest taxed country in the world for absolutely no return.

      RonJeremy - 2011-08-30 14:00

They are all a bit prone to thievery aren't they? Wonder why God made them that way?

      Big mack - 2011-08-30 14:16

No, the brain dead only see the choice between voting for a black party, who can steal, rape, plunder... Or the D.A which is white based! No contest I'm afraid.

  • Fred Marais - 2011-08-30 13:25

The ANC has absolutely no will to try and correct any shortcomings in their party. Indaba after conference, after meeting on corruption, they love talking, but it never amounts to anything. Not much of a backbone.

      umlaut - 2011-08-30 13:49

Watch it--the NHI will be the greatest fiasco ever- Discovery life will probably try to run it with guess what ---anc voting staff....HAHAHAHA

      Nipcat - 2011-08-30 13:57

So much for zuma saying they are serious about fighting corruption.

  • Mikus - 2011-08-30 13:26

Gee - didn't see that ruling coming...

  • Harvey - 2011-08-30 13:27

Well timed. Push this story out today. No one is going to notice it with the Youth league running amok.

      umlaut - 2011-08-30 13:53

Maybe the DA can insist on a re-investigation or get the public prosecuter to do it again when the anc will allow her to get funds again in the year 9090.

  • Herb - 2011-08-30 13:31

If I recall correctly, plea bargains were entered into whereby they would have paid back the monies to avoid jail time? Are they going to prison now?

  • Deon - 2011-08-30 13:33

Ai, where are the good old days ?

  • derkus - 2011-08-30 13:33

  • derkus - 2011-08-30 13:35

it is only R12 million, there is a lot more money growing on trees

  • Flarkit - 2011-08-30 13:38

Absolutely shocking. I'm in complete shock that corruption and theft by govt officials is so openly condoned.

  • Fedup - 2011-08-30 13:39

WTF you gotta be kidding right??

  • Goose - 2011-08-30 13:40

Check the headline of this article! "Parliament to write off travelgate losses" and right next to it is another article wherein Nathi "Mthethwa warns corrupt officials" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I am sure the ANC parliamentary braddas end seestas are shivering in their fraudulently obtained boots at this threat! When all is said and done, black folks are just not up to the job! Finish & klaar!

  • jakkals - 2011-08-30 13:40

And yet there is no money to investigate corruption allegations? How many clinics could have had a much needed upgrade from R12 million? How many houses could have been built? Time to show ANC supporters in pictures how much this money is. R12 million = x amount of houses.

      Big mack - 2011-08-30 14:18

Or one beeeg house for bra juju!! Stock up on vaseline bro, we are gonna get properly screwed!

  • Goose - 2011-08-30 13:42

Max, you are one of the "human garbage" that make up parliament in SA. History will judge you based on what you do, not what you say! Sies, ga Poe!

  • umlaut - 2011-08-30 13:43

The travelgators are probably beyond themselves-they don't have to go to jail now like the ordinary citizens must do when stealing------now they can do it again-It is all just a good laugh. ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL-==-ANC

  • W Wallace - 2011-08-30 13:45

  • Jakkie - 2011-08-30 13:47

No man? this must be a joke? How can anyone seriously make a statement like this and not expect some retalliation? O whait, this is now the stage where it will be blamed on appartheid! the ussual stunt when pushed into a corner and they have no other answer! Blerrie skelms! And the massess will still support more sympathy!

  • GypseyAnn - 2011-08-30 13:49

This just makes my blood boil. Perhaps they should have a huge rethink about stealing even more money from a hard paying tax nation and foot the bill for the toll roads. Particularly in the light of a section already looking as though some drunken fool has run along the highway with a paint brush where it has warped. Thieving swines!

  • AndV - 2011-08-30 13:49

Disgraceful! These thieves degraded our national government and ANC. They should not be in parliament! Kick them out! Why doesn't the Police arrest them for theft? The evidence is blatant to see!! How on earth can you just write it off? How do you justify this to the poor and needy??

  • Cowabunga - 2011-08-30 13:52

I owe some rates and taxes, if I burn all my documentation will they write it off as well? Guess not!

  • Bilbo - 2011-08-30 13:55

    ANC criminals!!

  • Nipcat - 2011-08-30 13:56

"I trust that this settles the matter", concluded Sisulu in his letter. Easy to say if it isn't your money.

  • moeggepraat - 2011-08-30 13:56

funny that I was locked up for a R250 outstanding traffic fine and these MOTHERF@CKERS can get away with R12MIL.............

  • realist - 2011-08-30 14:00

Imagine how many houses could be built with that money.

  • Acid Bath - 2011-08-30 14:06

Don't be so hard on them. They probably needed the money to furnish their Cape bling pads and, to be fair, kitting your mansion out in the latest Russian mafia style isn't cheap. Especially at Morkels.

  • mo-man - 2011-08-30 14:08

Ma se.....dis nou lekker. Steel geld van die staat, maar kry nie 'n rekord nie en hoef nie eens die geld terug te betaal nie. Ek gaan BESLIS ook skiet vir 'n MP pos!!!

  • beicime - 2011-08-30 14:08

What's this talk about ending corruption? Never mind we know it's talk and no action.

  • Coconut - 2011-08-30 14:10

How rediculous. If I don't pay my taxes to SARS I find my self charged with tax evasion etc. and thrown in jail. However if you steal tax payers money from SARS and you are an ANC official the money that you stole is written off. Talk about double standards.

  • VoteANCout - 2011-08-30 14:11

why right-off when people who owe the state (taxpayer) are still there and get paid a salary? and why where the documents destroyed? at whose instruction?

  • RemoteMedic - 2011-08-30 14:11

Ok wait!! They don't have funds to investigate Malema, but they willing to write off funds which was lost through bridery and fraud? This honestly is unbelievable! And still there are people voting for the ANC?

  • Big mack - 2011-08-30 14:12

'Records destroyed'..!! In Africa?? Another 12 million of stolen tax payers money up in smoke! I think I need to join the ANC and weasel my way into a cabinet position! Oh wait.. I cant, I'm too white and too honest...what a pity!!

  • Vela Stardust - 2011-08-30 14:15

Easy to write off the money when it is not your to write off! The 12m is taxpayers money. Has Max Sisulu asked the taxpayers for permission to write the money off? The Travelgate MP's must pay back our money!

  • Shrek - 2011-08-30 14:21

YOU WILL PAYBACK THE MONEY!!! NO!!! Okay, we will then write it off!!! BANANA REPUBLIC
