Potch gets DA mayor

2012-11-22 10:46

Johannesburg - A DA councillor was voted in as mayor of Potchefstroom after a motion of no confidence in the ANC mayor was passed, the municipality said on Thursday.

"The mayor was voted out last night [Wednesday], and the new one was voted in immediately afterwards," Tlokwe (Potchefstroom) municipal spokesperson Willie Maphosa said.

"The transition is going smoothly. The former mayor addressed staff this morning [Thursday], and the new mayor will address staff tomorrow [Friday]."

The North West Democratic Alliance said councillor Annette Combrinck became the first DA mayor in the province after she defeated ANC candidate Lucky Tsagae by 20 votes to 19.

"The mayoral seat was vacated... after an ANC-driven motion of no-confidence in former mayor Mapetle Mapetle was accepted with 37 votes against 13," it said in a statement.

The party said the vote was indicative of the instability and infighting in the North West.

North West ANC spokesperson Kenny Morolong was not immediately available for comment.

DA Tlokwe caucus leader Chris Landsberg said not all councillors participated in the vote for the new mayor.

"A faction of the ANC left the chambers after the motion of no confidence was passed," he said.

The DA said several ANC members tabled a notice of a motion of no-confidence in Combrinck shortly after she won the vote.

Nice one DA!!!! Now we need to do the same with all the other provinces and especially with Zuma! One by one, people are starting to realise that the ANC are not fit to even rule a province/district let alone the whole country!!!

"The DA said several ANC members tabled a notice of a motion of no-confidence in Combrinck shortly after she won the vote." Typical of the anc. They can't accept defeat graciously. Even if one day they get voted out of power I seriously doubt that they will hand over the reigns to the new ruling party.

      JanGrimbeek - 2012-11-22 11:04

They don't realise that they require valid reasons for doing something like this.

      andres.dewet - 2012-11-22 11:09

No confidence in what? Her sitting in the meeting? Her breathing? How can the ANC have no confidence in someone who has yet to do anything as mayor? Typical, typical, typical. They are professional takers of offense, givers of none.

      Jeremy - 2012-11-22 11:23

I think they realised too late how badly they'd screwed up - and to table a vote of no confidence was the only thing they could think of! Typically, they got that wrong too!

I don't quite get the garbage you say Sibusiso. The DA folk are of all races and religions looking for decent governance. The anc folk are all black with one or two people of other races all looking to just get rich quick while doing f'all about governing

      p.borchard - 2012-11-22 11:42

Sibusiso, you seem to have a problem understanding what you are reading. 90% of Us don't have a problem with what people Look like, we have a problem with what people Do or Don't do. F.eg. those who abuse the system to enrich themselves illegally (juliaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas + co), those who just sit in government drawing huge paypackets and then on top of that not Do Their Jobs (the name Angie comes to mind), those who do not see to it that those under their command maintain the infrastructure etc. Get that?

      oistar.tutu.9 - 2012-11-22 12:44

sibusiso, it is not by the way they look that we draw our conclusions, it is by the way they think and act. Maybe hard for you to realise this, bvut its true

      colin.langley - 2012-11-22 13:57

Can someone just put Sibusiso out of his misery...oi!

Proud to be a "Potchefstroomer" today! Let's hope that everyone will work together to make this town a better place. The last thing we need is a bunch of people unhappy with the outcome of the vote trying to cause trouble. Plus, I don't get how they can table a motion of no-confidence when she hasn't even started the job yet... Give the woman a chance at least. I'm sure she'll be great at it.

      henry.justice.372 - 2012-11-22 11:26

The rest of us vaalies envy you this day. You gonna get decent billing and services now boet. When you go into a goverment building in potch now , you might even get people working that know what they doing without the "i'm a high and mighty anc turd" attitude. VIVA DA ,VIVA Potch

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Well done DA !

  • thato.seloane - 2012-11-22 11:08

Some people have selective reading, the article says "ANC-driven motion of no-confidence " so ANC kicked out its useless mayor. Why can't we give credit where due people

      richard.hipkin - 2012-11-22 11:15

Agreed, well done to the ANC for opening their eyes and realising hte DA are better. ;)

      andrew.cummins.9 - 2012-11-22 11:15

Because it sounds like Hog wash or ANC was in this case. So the ANC then initilizes a vote of no confidence in thier own man just to follow it up with a vote of no confidence in the new (wom)man. No I dont believe that.

      fanie.viljoen.73 - 2012-11-22 11:16

This was not a hunger for justice move from the ANC, it was a factional implosion from the ANC. It backfired.

      grant.neill.16 - 2012-11-22 11:18

Agreed Thato.. I think this one kinda blew up in their face though because a faction of the ANC left and then the ones who stayed behind called for another vote of no confidence in the new Mayor.. It's all quite confusing!

      andres.dewet - 2012-11-22 11:22

@Thato: Agreed. But how long must other towns in Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga, Free State wait before their ANC-held councils wake up and smell the mismanagement hurting their poorest-of-the-poor? It's not selective reading, it's people are just unwilling to give a pat on the back for taking 5-10years to smell the gross poor-governance. Yes, they did pass the motion, but the motion's need was of their own doing. Same as in national parliament... are we going to pat ANC-MP's on the back for going against a poor leader now? Or are we going to say, "Well, you put him there in the first place and look how much damage has been done!"

      ian.despy - 2012-11-22 11:24

Yeah That's what I read, but you need to read the last paragraph, where it says The DA said several ANC members tabled a notice of a motion of no-confidence in Combrinck shortly after she won the vote. Hmmmm.....you make up your mind

      Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2012-11-22 13:01

Basically the ANC fired one of its own, and we need to applaud them for this. Now because the party is split in the middle, those ANC members who were against the firing of the said ANC Mayor decided to not vote when a new one was to be chosen. I guess by default then the DA candidate was the winner. This is exactly what the ANC are fearing regarding the Zuma issue.

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-11-22 11:11

Net 'n voorsmakie van grooooooot dinge wat aan die kom is!

  • chiepner - 2012-11-22 11:12

Well you know what - I am shocked, but then again I am sure that like alot of ordinary citizens there is a growing amount of ANC members getting fed up with poor excuses and arrogant leaders lining their pockets.

  • shannon.moffett.9 - 2012-11-22 11:14

How can you have a motion of no confidence in the new mayor when she has not yet had a day to prove herself. Give her a chance!

      fanie.viljoen.73 - 2012-11-22 14:21

You can't, there must be reason like fraud, bad work ethics etc. Just an uninformed move from them.

  • petrus.pidolski - 2012-11-22 11:15

viva DA viva, we hope that u will work hard and try to improve the development of communities such as promosa.

  • lyndol.lyons - 2012-11-22 11:16

One small step for man, one giant leap for the DA! The anc cracks or should I say craters are showing big time.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-11-22 11:18

"The DA said several ANC members tabled a notice of a motion of no-confidence in Combrinck shortly after she won the vote." Um, she hasn't even started yet, so on what grounds are you basing your motion on?? God, how old are the ANC? 2 years old? Or is 100 years made them senile?

  • joshua.mcallister.75 - 2012-11-22 11:18

So basicaly the local ANC shot themselves in the foot to spite their leg. They voted out one of their own, then several walked out before they could vote in their new candidate, where as the DA then had the majority vote needed to vote in their candidate. Bizarre. And just plain stupid

This is the funniest thing I've read all year. HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • justin.schonegevel - 2012-11-22 11:38

Surely then this meant that even ANC members voted against the mayor to achieve such vote?

      charl.malan.12 - 2012-11-22 11:54

Exactly, this is why the AnC is stalling the vote of no confidence in Jacob Zuma, they know that their members will vote against him!

  • djim.bie - 2012-11-22 11:40

Please can we have the same here?

  • petrus.pidolski - 2012-11-22 11:43

  • gideon.g.horn - 2012-11-22 11:45

ok. Mayby I am a bit slow but won't there be a problem with the vote because some of the anc members weren't there to vote? Sh*t I hope not!! We need the DA as many places as possible!

  • Brad - 2012-11-22 11:48

I wouldn't get overly excited though. The ANC factions will regroup and have another vote of no confidence to get her out.

      alan.gernet - 2012-11-22 12:13

It shows nonetheless that the tide is turning.

      Brad - 2012-11-22 12:34

It shows that the ANC is collapsing in on itself. That factionalism will eventually result in it losing its outright majorities. That is all.
