Durban - KwaZulu-Natal ANC chairperson Zweli Mkhize has led the party in the province with distinction, his colleagues said on Friday.

"We are happy that he is leaving this province united and we wish him well in his new position," said SA Communist Party KwaZulu-Natal secretary Themba Mthembu.

He was speaking during a three-day African National Congress provincial general council at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus.

Mkhize, who is also KwaZulu-Natal premier, will be replaced as ANC provincial chairperson during the three-day ANC provincial general council.

Provincial deputy chairperson Willies Mchunu and Education MEC Senzo Mchunu have been nominated to succeed him.

Mkhize has to be replaced because, according to the ANC constitution, the party's leaders are not supposed to hold two positions at the same time.

He was elected as the ANC's treasurer general at its national conference in Mangaung in December.

Mchunu described Mkhize as an outstanding leader who possessed all the essential qualities required for sound leadership.

"He is humble, polite, courageous, determined and decisive. He also has a razor-sharp mind. Using these qualities, he has been a strong pillar of our movement by providing strategic leadership."

President Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the keynote address at the provincial general council, which is being attended by about 200 delegates.
