Johannesburg – The tendency by political leaders to remain in power for life is worrying, the ANC says in documents released ahead of its national general council.

The party makes no mention of specific countries and leaders. It calls for the lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwean leaders to promote development in that country.

The NGC, to be held in October, is intended to assess progress made in implementing resolutions taken at the ANC’s last elective congress, in Mangaung in December 2012.

"The tendency by some in political leadership to remain in power for many years against the will of the people is a worrisome phenomenon," it says.

It encourages counter-revolutionary activities and social and political upheaval. It adds to the creation of "fertile ground for manipulation and all sorts of conspiracies by imperialist and neo-colonial forces".

The ANC mentions violence and regime change in countries like Tunisia, Libya, Lesotho, and Madagascar.

On Zimbabwe the party only mentions that most observers declared its 2013 elections free, fair, and credible and that the ruling Zanu-PF won with an overwhelming majority.
